FOTD -- October 05, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yes, I know that today's FOTD is late, but I have an alibi. On Sunday FL was bitten by the antiquing bug, which sent us on a trip to an antique emporium in Bellefonte, which is 2 miles northeast of the geographic center of the state of Pennsylvania. Actually I'm glad we went. I found a 35-year-old 35mm SLR film camera in perfect working condition, offered for sale at $15. Film cameras are pretty much a thing of the past, but how could I resist such a bargain. The camera cost $250.00 new in 1974. Today's image lies in the fractal that results when the formula Z^1.5+C is calculated 16 levels down the logarithmic hyperladder and no function is applied. The parent fractal is shaped much like the minibrot at the center of today's image. The scene is located rather deep in a valley leading to a bud on the shore line of the main period-2 bud of the parent. Having put so little effort into the image, I was unable to give it a real rating, but considering the muddiness, a rating of a 5 would be about right. The name "The Forever Valley" is a poetic phrase. It has little connection with the actual appearance of the image. The calcula- tion time of 6-1/3 minutes is brief enough to keep doubts of the worth of the calculation at bay. FOTD -- October 04, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a minibrot on the main stem of its parent fractal, which is a Mandelbrot set about 1000 times the size of the true M-set. Today's scene lies at -1749 on the stem, at a depth where the minibrots look like those of order 2.5. But unlike true Z^2.5 minibrots, there are no discontinuities around today's minibrot. Creating fractional minibrots without discontinuities is the main feature of the DivideBrot series of formulas. I could give no rating to today's image, especially since it takes a longer-than-usual 7-1/2 minutes to calculate. FOTD -- October 03, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's scene lies far out on the main negative spike of an oversized Mandelbrot set. Yes, I realize that the minibrots on the spike of the M-set are all quadratic, but though it looks like a Mandelbrot set, the parent fractal of today's image is a M-set only on the surface. In its depths it is a combination of quadratic and cubic elements, and with a magnitude of 10^10, today's scene lies deep enough to have cubic tendencies. Most of the effect was achieved by rendering the image with the outside set to 'tdis'. The rating of a 6 means I consider the image to be merely adequate. The calculation time of 19 seconds makes the trip to the FOTD web site hardly necessary, though the trip is always a lot more fun. FOTD -- October 02, 2009 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's little diversion holds both quadratic and order-10 elements. The overall pattern is typical of those in the East Valley areas of quadratic minibrots, but the 9-lobed minibrot at the center is clearly of order-10. I named the image "Infected with H1N1" becuase it shows an everyday scene in any quadratic East Valley infected with the Z^10+C virus. I chose the name because of the closing od several schools, where the students are coming down with the latest trendy influenza virus. After a modicum of indecision, I rated the image at a 7.5, the extra half point being for the extra 15 minutes or so of effort I put into the coloring, which BTW, was not achieved in a sepa- rate graphics program. The calculation time of 39 seconds is brief by any standards except for the lifetimes of some of the more exotic sub-atomic particles. But don't be a computer nerd, view the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A mixture of sun and clouds made Thursday a rather scenic day here at Fractal Central, but the temperature of 55F 13C was just a little too chilly to enjoy the scenic conditions.
