FOTD -- October 15, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: By all rights, today's image should show a minibrot of order 0.85. But such a thing is an impossibility, since such a minibrot would have minus 0.15 lobes, which is nonsense. Instead, we have a normal quadratic minibrot at the center of the image, with a curiously symmetrical east fragment of another quadratic minibrot just to its east and a lot of interesting things happening in between. To see this situation clearly however, another in-zoom is needed. I named today's image "Fractal Spiderworks" because the elements surrounding the minibrot remind me of spiderwebs covered with dewdrops. Then I rated it at a 7. The image does have a certain attractiveness about it. The calculation time of only one minute means no one will waste much time calculating an image they find disappointing. And the finished image is posted as always on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Wednesday began promisingly here at Fractal Central, with blue skies, sparkling sunshine and a temperature of 43F 6C. But by mid-morning the clouds moved in, leading to a cloudy and chilly day that brought little pleasure to the fractal cats until the tuna appeared late in the afternoon. FOTD 14-10-09 (Talons of Doom [5])

FOTD -- October 14, 2009 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is not a scene in any Mandelbrot set, warped or otherwise. It is a an oblique scene in the Z^2+C Julibrot, which encompasses all the warped Mandelbrot sets as well as all the Julia sets. The orientation of the image is double-rotated 5 and 5 degrees from the true Julia direction. The banded effect of the foreground elements was achieved with the 'ranges' feature of Fractint, a little used and probably almost unknown feature. The three-dimensional effect of ghostly half-obscured Mandelbrot buds in the background arises because points that do not escape will eventually settle into the same orbits regardless of where they begin their journeys. The rating of a 5 indicates that I'm not very satisfied with the image, which is not quite worth the 8 minutes required to run the parameter file. The name "Talons of Doom" refers to the talon-like effect of the converging foreground stuff on the right side of the image. FOTD 12-10-09 (Mystic Elliptic Set [7])

FOTD -- October 12, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's scene lies in the upper right quadrant of yesterday's image, and uses much of the same color palette. It is actually an Elliptic set (It is not a Julia set!) lying close to one of the apparitions of the large minibrot on the main stem of the larger minibrot on the main stem of the parent Mandelbrot set, which is nowhere to be recognized in this Elliptic orientation of the Julibrot. Because of the effect of a near-blinding aura of light that might surround something as mystical as the Holy Grail, I named the image "Mystic Elliptic Set". But there is nothing sacred about the image. It is all done with mere numbers. (Then again, perhaps numbers are not so simple. Maybe God creates His works with numbers.) The rating of a 7 is my fair estimate of the value of the image. The calculation time of 4-3/4 minutes makes running the included parameter file almost a breeze. FOTD 11-10-09 (Near Point Zero [7.5])

FOTD -- October 11, 2009 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a view of the large minibrot at -1.75 on the negative spike of the Mandelbrot set. Yes, I realize it has nothing at all about it that would suggest it is a minibrot in the M-set, but this image is not sliced in the Mandelbrot direction. It is sliced in what I call the Elliptic direction, which is the orientation determined by the real(c) and imag(z) axes of the 4-dimensional Julibrot. Today's image is actually a reworking and re-coloring of a similar image that appeared several years ago. The original image is very similar. Anyone who cares to go searching for it will have a lot of fun before stumbling upon it. The name "Near Point Zero" refers to the imag(c) value of 0.0001, which is the tiny departure from zero necessary to produce the image. The rating of 7.5 includes 1/2 point for the coloring effort, even though a good part of the coloring is carried over from the original image, which was posted several ears ago. The calculation time is a fireball 10 seconds, almost as fast as the speed of light. If it had been a little faster, it would have exceeded the speed of light and finished 10 seconds before it was started. All such troublesome paradoxes may be forgotten however by viewing the finished image on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Heavy clouds continued here at Fractal Central on Saturday, but the overnight rain ended before daybreak. This was not good news however, for the rain was replaced by a blustery northwest wind, which with a temperature of 61F 16C, dampened the fractal cats' enthusiasm. Once again, their complaints were silenced by a generous second serving of chunk-light tuna in water. With all the cat activity, the rest of the day was thankfully uneventful. FOTD 10-10-09 (Blues in the Dawn [6])

FOTD -- October 10, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image, with its royal blues and oranges, lies in the parent fractal that results when Z^(1.1) is subtracted from Z^(-1.1). This parent fractal is a grossly oversized thing consisting of two Mandeloids, one of them a peanut-shaped thing, the other a partially cut-off Mandelbrot set. These two large Mandeloids are connected by a stream of debris, with today's image located near the midpoint of this debris. Royal blue and orange are my old school colors, so I gave the image an extra point in the ratings. If I had gone to another school, the image, with the blues that just don't look right, would rate only an average 5. The name "Blues in the Dawn" is appropriate for one who is going home after a rough, disappointing night out. The brief calcula- tion time of 1-1/2 minutes kind of makes up for that bad night. FOTD 09-10-09 (Light Versus Dark [7])

FOTD -- October 09, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The FOTD is late. That's the way of it sometimes. Today's image is an evaporated one in the fractal that results when various negative portions of Z^(-1.2) and Z^(-7.5) are mixed and (1/C) is added. Due to heavier work than expected, I spent less time than usual finding the image. The short time made little difference however, as the image still rates a higher-than-average 7. The name "Light Versus Dark" refers to the donut ring of contrasting light and dark elements surrounding the nearly- obscuerd minibrot at the center. (I could just as easily named the image "Planetary Nebula".) The calculation time of 8 seconds more than 12 minutes is admittedly slow, so why not avoid all risk of impatience by visiting the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the finished image at leisure there. Thursday started sunny here at Fractal Central, but clouds arrived in the afternoon, blocking the fractal cats' time in the sun and making them crabby. FOTD -- October 08, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image lies in the parent fractal that is produced when various negative portions of Z^(-5.0125) and Z^(-1.0125) are combined and (1/C) is added. This parent fractal resembles an oversized circular disk lying east of the origin, with scalloped edges on the east side and a circular bay on the west. Today's image is located in a valley leading to this bay. The name "Golden Apples" has little to do with the image, other than the golden area inside the blue surroundings. The rating of a 7 indicates that I consider the image above average. FOTD -- October 07, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: NEW FORMULA ALERT! Today's formula is a new one. I named it "AllNewDivideBrot". It is a modification of the NewDivideBrot formula, which at a cost of a slight increase in calculation time, eliminates the tendency of the resulting fractals to grow in size beyond all bounds as the second parameter is increased. Before you copy it into a formula file, remove the 'frm:' before the name. The formula still has some problems to be worked out, so there might be an updated version in a few days. The parent fractal is a normal sized Mandelbrot set pictured about 2/3 of the way through the process of morphing into an order-7 Mandeloid. Today's image lies in a backward valley very near the negarive X-axis. The image shows an order-7 minibrot in unusually rich surround- ings. In fact, the surroundings are so grossly overdone that I could not give the image a rating. I think the name "Seventy Times Seven" is a phrase from the Bible, indicating how many times we are to forgive our enemies. Why the phrase came to mind is a mystery, since I am no saint. My patience would run out at about the second offense. FOTD -- October 06, 2009 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Things were quite busy here at F.C. on Monday, so to save time I returned to the same parent fractal that gave us yesterday's FOTD image and checked an area that appeared to have East Valley characteristics. After a hurried search of the area, I found today's scene lurking not very deep. The outside=fmod option showed the way to the minibrot. This option surrounds minibrots with circular bull's eyes. I named the image "The Bat-fractal", perhaps thinking of a certain comic hero. Then I rated it at a measly average 5. It's really not worth anything more. The one redeeming feature is the calculation time, which at a mere 55 seconds, will cause no one to grow impatient. FOTD -- October 05, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Yes, I know that today's FOTD is late, but I have an alibi. On Sunday FL was bitten by the antiquing bug, which sent us on a trip to an antique emporium in Bellefonte, which is 2 miles northeast of the geographic center of the state of Pennsylvania. Actually I'm glad we went. I found a 35-year-old 35mm SLR film camera in perfect working condition, offered for sale at $15. Film cameras are pretty much a thing of the past, but how could I resist such a bargain. The camera cost $250.00 new in 1974. Today's image lies in the fractal that results when the formula Z^1.5+C is calculated 16 levels down the logarithmic hyperladder and no function is applied. The parent fractal is shaped much like the minibrot at the center of today's image. The scene is located rather deep in a valley leading to a bud on the shore line of the main period-2 bud of the parent. Having put so little effort into the image, I was unable to give it a real rating, but considering the muddiness, a rating of a 5 would be about right. The name "The Forever Valley" is a poetic phrase. It has little connection with the actual appearance of the image. The calcula- tion time of 6-1/3 minutes is brief enough to keep doubts of the worth of the calculation at bay.
