FOTD -- October 31, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: We end the month of October with another blast from the distant past -- May, 1997 to be exact -- when virtually the same image appeared under the name "Martian". To update the image I have slightly re-cropped it, tweaked a few colors, and changed the outside to 'real'. The name "Oasis" refers to a slight tinge of green on the horizon at the left edge of the image, which I took to be a distant oasis of green on the otherwise desolate planet Mars. Or it could be the desert planet otherwise known as 'Dune' in the well-known series of fantasy novels pretending to be science fiction. Since the image is another repeat, I gave it no rating. There is not much more to be said about the image, which speaks for itself, other than repeating that the way to see it is to run the included parameter file and wait 30 seconds, or to surf out to the glorious FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view the completed image in relaxed serenity there. The Friday weather here at Fractal Central was a repeat of the past 2 days' conditions -- heavy clouds but dry, and a tempera- ture of 55F 13C. The fractal cats gave up early and spent the rest of the day in the coziest warm places they could find. For me the day was just one more in a seemingly endless string of routine days. (Not that I find anything wrong with this.) If all goes well, and even if it doesn't, the next FOTD, the first of a new month, will be posted in 24 hours. FOTD 30-10-09 (The Second Time Around [No Rating])

FOTD -- October 30, 2009 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Now and then I sneak in a blast from the past, in which I do a slight reworking of an earlier FOTD image -- today's image is a reworking of an early image indeed. The first version appeared over 12 years ago in April of 1997 -- the first month of the FOTD, at a time when I was interested in what I call 'ghost buds', vague ghostly high-iteration things that often appear in the background of the perturbed Mandelbrot sets. (These ghost buds appear because regardless of where the points start, if they do not escape first, they eventually settle into the same orbits as the points that start at 0,0.) The effect of the monstrous banded elements in the foreground was created by the 'ranges' feature of Fractint, a little used feature that, as far as I know, can be accessed only through the command line. The scene lies in the perturbed M-set with a starting point of the square root of 0.777,-0.555. (For some reason, the type=mandel fractals are calculated with a starting point equal to the square root of the entered complex number.) The scene is located on the north shore of the main bay, just west of the large period-3 bud. The large ghost bud in the background has a periodicity of 14. The smaller buds have a much higher periodicity. The maxiter of 32767 is actually too low to fully resolve the image, but the 'ranges' option does not work with a maxiter higher than this. The name "The Second Time Around" admits that today's image is a near-repeat of one that appeared over 12 years ago. I could hardly give a rating to a repeat, so I let the image go unrated. The calculation time of a fireball 19 seconds will bring no hardships. The temperature of 57F 14C did nothing to improve things. The fractal cats found comfortable spots and slept through most of the day. FOTD -- October 29, 2009 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: To begin, let me make it perfectly clear that my name is not Fractal -- the name of today's image is "My Name is Fractal". Now that this perplexing problem has been solved, let's turn to the FOTD image of the day. To begin, the image lies in the parent fractal that is created when various parts of Z^(-10) and (1/Z) are combined and (1/C) is added. This fractal resembles nothing as much as an over- sized splat. The rating of a 6 seems about right. The image is nothing that we haven't seen countless times before. The calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes is perhaps a bit longer than the result is worth, but what the heck, those who do not calculate the parameter file will never know what they missed. The way out of this quandary is to make a quick trip to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and enjoy the finished image there without the task of running the parameter file. On Wednesday afternoon FL made one of those comments that gets me thinking. I wrote a few politically-oriented paragraphs that I intended to post here, but I counted to 10, and then, to avoid an off-topic debate, I deleted them. After all, what more could I add to what is already filling the news? Wednesday here at Fractal Central started with rain and ended with clouds. The temperature of 61F 16C would have been fine if the sun had been shining. The fractal cats gave up early and spent most of the day searching for places to curl up and sleep. After deleting my original political comment, my day was quiet enough. As for the next FOTD -- look for it in about 24 hours. FOTD -- October 28, 2009 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us back to one of the formulas of the old MandNewt series. (Number 11 to be exact.) I long ago forgot what these formulas were originally intended to do, but regardless, as today's FOTD shows, they still make interesting images. I named the image "Spirit of the All", leaving it to the viewer to decide what the word 'all' refers to. In my opinion, 'all' could only mean the multiverse, including everything both objective and subjective, which would make the spirit of all this stuff equal to God. But I see nothing unusually godlike in the image, so the exact meaning must forever remain an enigma. Whatever the meaning of its name, the image rates a solid 7, with an added 1/2 point for the effort I put into smoothing the colors. The calculation time of 3-1/4 minutes will try the patience of no one but the most impatient. Those impatient few may save time by flying out to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the already-calculated image posted there. FOTD 27-10-09 (Space Exploration [7])

FOTD -- October 27, 2009 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image exists in the parent fractal that magically appears when 0.4 part of Z^(-0.8) is subtracted from Z^2 and (1/C) is added. This fractal is a grossly oversized networky thing with a curiously distorted Mandeloid near its origin. Today's image is located in the vicinity of this Mandeloid. I rated the image, perhaps a bit liberally, at a 7. Actually, the image is little more than just another minibrot with a quirky pattern around it. The name "Space Exploration" refers to something that will never happen in our lifetimes. The calculation time of a relatively brief 3-2/3 minutes may be eliminated entirely by checking the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> where the finished image is posted for immediate enjoyment. Cynical political comment is in the philofractal version. Read it at your own risk. Sunny skies and a temperature of 63F 17C made the fractal cats happy here at Fractal Central on Monday. FOTD -- October 26, 2009 (Rating 8) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Do not be concerned if the top half of today's image appears all too routine. A huge change happens at the exact center, leading to the bottom half, which is totally different. The image is divided into two halves. The top half is outside stuff, while the bottom half is inside stuff brought to life by the 'bof60' inside fill. Any more talk would be superfluous. Unless the sound is turned off, the image will speak for itself, so I recommend running the parameter file and waiting with bated breath for the big change that appears halfway through the calculation. The name "Half of Everything" makes little sense, though it does refer to the schizoid personality of the image. The rating of an 8 indicates that the image is well worth the 3-3/4 minutes spent calculating it. If, for some reason, calculation is impractical, the finished image may be viewed on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> But be prepared to stare in awe and wonder. Perfect late October weather prevailed here at Fractal Central on Sunday -- not a cloud in the sky, light winds, and a tempera- ture of 61F 16C. The fractal cats spent the entire afternoon fighting for the best spot on the sunny shelf in the southwest window. My day was uneventful. The next FOTD is due in 24 hours. FOTD -- October 25, 2009 (Rating 9) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is unusual enough to earn a rating of a lofty 9. It is a scene in the parent fractal that results when various negative parts of Z^(-1.4) and Z^(-4.4) are combined and (1/C) is added. One full point of the rating is due to the extra effort I put into the coloring and the bit of luck I had with bringing up random color palettes. The parent fractal is a typical double-negative thing, with a prominent 'fan' extending east from the origin and filaments that terminate in rings. Today's image is located toward the eastern edge of the 'fan'. The name "Fractal Dissolution" refers to the appearance of the image, which gives the impression of being caught in the act of evaporating. BTW, the image is not 'evaporated'. The evapora- ted version is too chaotic. The calculation time of 2-3/4 minutes is thankfully brief, and will make the image available to everyone who wishes to calculate it. The weather on Saturday left much to be desired here at Fractal Central.
