FOTD -- July 14, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I recently wrote that all midgets in the Z^1.5+C Mandeloid look the same. After finding today's image, I am no longer certain that this is true. The pattern around the midget is fractured, as would be expected, but the theme of converging spiral arms clearly shows through the breaks and almost totally onliterates the radiating discontinuities. I gave the image no name or rating. Names and ratings add little to the impact of a fractal image. If the image doesn't have impact, a lot of fancy words and bloated ratings are not going to create it. The render time of over 19 minutes is true on my antique but still working fractal-dedicated P200 machine. All the more modern units, if they run Fractint at all, will calculate today's image in far less time. The parameter file has been posted, along with the completed image, to the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Near perfect weather here at New Fractal Central on Thursday went unappreciated by the fractal cats, who spent the day alternating between sleeping and getting into trouble. I don't really have much choice. Can anyone recommend a way to see IF a win98 se machine is sending out junk at the behest of someone else? If I can find something that alerts me to 'zombie' use, maybe I can keep things to a minimum? I'm using avg's free antivirus, and it's filter, trojan hunter and it's 'guard' (the guard, i'm told, isn't very good, though) and spybot, and run Advanced System optimizer with those when things start to drag or hang. FOTD 11-07-06 (Hidden Zebras [6])

FOTD -- July 11, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image consists of a lot of black and white stripes. Zebras have black and white stripes, therefore zebras must be in the image. But a careful search reveals no zebras, leading to the conclusion that the zebras are hidden. This is why I named today's image "Hidden Zebras". Actually, the image is a scene in the (-Z)^(1.5)+C Mandeloid, which not by coincidence is the same figure as the Z^(1.5)+C Mandeloid as it appears minus-PI levels down the log ladder. These Z^(1.5) fractals are frustrating. The midgets in them have a 'they-all-look-the-same-to-me' quality that is hard to escape. Discontinuities converge on the midgets in a boringly similar manner. But hope springs eternal, and I never give up hope that one day I will find a midget in the range around Z^1.5 that is a true prize winner. I added a bit of action to today's image by rendering it with the outside set to 'tdis'. The 'tdis' was worth the effort because when I used it, the rating of the image jumped from a 5 to a 6. The render time of 6-1/2 minutes is not so easily improved. A S.O.T.A. fireball computer is needed to speed up things, and many such new-fangled machines have a nasty habit of being un- able to run Fractint, the best fractal generating program of all time. A request to ATI Radeon VE display adapter users re Fractint.

I left the Fractint list back in 2004... couldn't run the software under XP. I wasn't about to mess with dual-booting or other work-arounds, and I didn't have space for a dedicated DOS computer. So I quit. Recently I came across a message from Jim Muth, in which he remarked that he had absolutely no problem running Fractint in his XP Pro machine. Aha, I said to myself, I wonder if I can run Fractint in my new computer? I can, SF1 (1280 x 1024) is usable, so I am re-joining the list Now I do not have XP Pro... I have XP Media Center Edition installed. This is apparently a subset of XP Pro, not the Home edition. So, I am wondering if your problem resides not in your graphics adapter, but in your XP version? I can't be sure, as *my* adapter is a RADEON X300 SE (0x5B60), ATI Technologies Inc. I must say that it's fun to be back, and playing with sstools again! John W. Mark, KEEP win98SE - it works the best, I have been using it forever for all my animations. You can run fractint from windows in a full screen shell, or you can boot up and stop at the command line without loading windows. No problems at all. WinXP ? you see all the problems people here are having .... FAT32 is what I have, again no problems, and Win98 actually will work better. FAT16 is not necessary, I did a lot of experimenting years ago to find the optimum fractint conditions.

FOTD -- July 13, 2006 (No Rating) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to a minor valley of the Z^(1.5)+C Mandeloid as it appears 1.5 levels down the complex log ladder. I named it "Fractal Kind of Thing" for the reason that that's what it is. Unable to decide on a rating, I let the image go un-rated. The image is a departure from my usual style of fractal. Instead of a midget and its hectic surrounding pattern, we have a serene infinite blue background with a fractal something floating by in the foreground. The effect of infinitely deep space was achieved by rendering the image with the outside set to 'fmod'. Those who find the 5-minute render time too slow may download the finished image almost instantly from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A warm muggy Wednesday here at New Fractal Central was spoiled at 7pm by a lively thunder-shower. The fractal cats were startled by some of the louder thunder claps, but did not go into hiding. Though my day was busier than average, the work was finished promptly. It is looking more likely that after tomorrow there will be a week or so hiatus in the FOTD while fractal lady and I refresh ourselves at some out-of-the-way place yet to be determined. FOTD -- July 12, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I was rather busy on Tuesday, which explains the lateness and briefness of today's image. I'm trying to get things wrapped up so we can take a short vacation in a few days. I deserve some time off. I think it has been 4 years since the last vacation. Today's image takes the fractal that results when 33 parts of Z^(-1.6) are subtracted from 33 parts of Z^(-1.5), and finds a promising scene with a quadratic midget in it. It then evapo- rates the scene and renders the resulting blank screen with the outside set to 'bof61'. The resulting image rates a 6, (in my at opinion at least). I do not think the image deserves a name. The render time of 8 minutes is well within reason for an image with a maxiter of 1000 that consists entirely of trapped points. But to make things even more convenient, the completed GIF image will soon be available on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Hazy, warm and muggy weather continued here at Fractal Central on Tuesday. The fractal cats, who continued acting like kittens, were notably unconcerned with the weather. They were more concerned with chasing the large fly that got into the house. Cassie, the more agile one, finally caught the fly and ate it. Only one lamp was knocked over in the chase. The next FOTD will be posted in 24 hours. After that, things become uncertain. Fractal lady and I are thinking of shutting things down for a week or so and taking a long-overdue vacation to places yet to be determined. No matter which entry is created, it is basically the same for each. The only difference is within the AX and BX values. I can now see why FractInt may not be displaying things correctly, or giving error messages, when you choose another listed mode. You really only have one that can work properly. And I did not find any reference to the version 6.13.10.6006 drivers that you have loaded. What might help, is to know which Series your Radeon VE adapter is, such as 7000, 9250, 9200, X850, etc....
