FOTD -- October 11, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image is a scene on the negative X-axis of the Z^(4.003)+C Mandeloid. It is located in the East Valley area of the large midget, which is the analog of the large midget at -1.75 on the negative X-axis of the Z^(2.003)+C Mandeloid. Here again we have features that remind me of a rail yard. And there are quartic midgets -- lots of them -- so many midgets in fact that they come in clusters. Today's image picks out one midget in a long string of similar midgets. Part of an adjoining midget is visible at the right border of the frame. I named the image "No Quartic Contest" and rated it at a 6. I had no good reason for choosing the name; the rating seems appropriate. The calculation time of 12 minutes is true on my worn-out 10-year-old computer. SOTA machines will finish the task in a couple minutes or so. But the fastest and easiest way of all to see the image is to visit the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and view it there. The sun was bright, the wind was light, and the temperature reached 75F 24C here at Fractal Central on Tuesday. But the weather went un-noticed by the fractal cats, who spent much of the day racing up and down the long hallway, sliding around on the carpets on the newly refinished floor. We have decided to let them have their fun until they grow tired of it. They we'll put rubber mats under the slippery carpets to hold them more firmly in place. The graphic work continued light. I expect Wednesday to be the same. The next FOTD fractal will appear in 24 hours. What it will look like nobody knows. To use Fractint to create the fractal specified by a parameter file and its formula: - Copy and paste the parameters and formula into a text file -- one that ends in .txt - Save and exit the file - I recommend a file name of eight letters or less since DOS programs can only show eight character filenames - Change the filename's extension from .txt to .par - Disregard the warning: "Are you sure you want to change it?" (Click: Yes) - This is your 'parameter file' - Run Fractint - Press the @ key to specify your parameter file and parameter set. This will initially show a list of names of *parameter sets* in Fractint's default *parameter file* named fractint.par. Pressing the @ key is called 'Run saved command set' on Fractint's Main Menu page. - Press the F6 key to choose the name of the *parameter file* you just created. - Use the cursor keys to select your parameter *file's name* - Press <Enter> - Use the cursor keys to select the parameter *set's name* within the file if it is not already selected. Version 20.0 of Fractint will not be able to create these fractals. These parameter files use features available in the 'Developer's version' (20.4.4) of Fractint available at: http://www.fractint.org/ The developer's version is usually very stable, but does not have all the support files packaged with it. The Developer's web page says, "If all you want is the executable package of the developer's version, download the file fradev.zip" which is available on that page. This is just the files: fractint.exe and fractint.cfg. This is what you want. Note that this version will be missing all the support files like fractint.par, fractint.l, sstools.ini, etc. so you need to have previously downloaded and installed a full copy of fractint 20.0 before copying: fractint.exe (20.4.4) to your Fractint directory. FOTD -- October 10, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Surprising fractals sometimes lurk where least expected. In today's image for example, I used no fancy formula. The entire image was done with the type=manzpower formula built into Fractint, using the basic equal-iteration bands on the outside and a solid black on the inside. I was thinking of the curious rectangles on the negative X-axis of the Z^2.003 Mandeloid, when I wondered what might lie on the negative X-axis of the Z^3.003 figure. I found no rectangles there. What I found instead is a fractal filled with cobwebs. I named it "Cobweb Corner", though I could just as easily have given it a Halloween name. The image has an equally interesting Julia set, which will be calculated if the space bar is struck twice with today's image on the screen. The odd planes and oblique slices are most likely interesting also. I might check these slices tomorrow. If I find anything of interest, it will appear as tomorrow's FOTD. The rating of a 7 seems a bit overblown. I chose the rating when I first saw the image with its excessive detail. Since then the image has come to appear too busy, with no central theme and too much color. But the rating of a 7 was an honest one at the time, and it will remain. The calculation takes 28-1/2 minutes to complete on my old compu- ter. It will go far faster on the SOTA units that do not choke on DOS programs. Another perfectly perfect day here at Fractal Central on Monday went un-appreciated by the fractal cats, who discovered the fun of zooming up and down the hallway, putting on the brakes on the hall carpets and sliding 6 feet. Their fun will come to an abrupt end tomorrow however, when we tack the carpets in place. My day was slower than expected, but it is looking more like that big job will be coming in at the start of next week. I guess I had best enjoy this week, which will be slow. FOTD -- October 09, 2006 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Most elements of the cubic Mandeloid are extensions of similar elements in the classic Mandelbrot set. They bear a strong resemblance to their analogs. East Valley of the M-set is reflected in the prominent east and west valleys of the cubic set. Seahorse Valley is reflected in the valleys leading to the prominent north and south double-buds of the cubic set. But the cubic Mandeloid has one set of valleys that is entirely new, bearing no resemblance to anything in the classic M-set. These valleys are the ones that split the buds into two parts. Today's image is a scene deep in the valley centered on the Y-axis, which splits the north bud. This valley has no corre- sponding feature in the Mandelbrot set and holds elements that are entirely new. I named the image "A New Valley" for this very reason. The rating of an average 5 indicates that I am not fully satisfied with the results of the day's fractal efforts. The colors seem muddy, or it could be that my ancient monitor needs replacing. The render time of 25 minutes is borderline slow, though not nearly as slow as some recent images. But the task of rendering the scene may be escaped by going to the FOTD web site and viewing the image there. FOTD -- October 08, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's unusually slow image takes us deep into the southern shore of the west branch of the north valley of the cubic Mandelbrot set. This valley is the analog of Seahorse Valley of the classic quadratic Mandelbrot set, though the elements are arranged in powers of 3 rather than powers of 2. The image is very slow because of the unusually high maxiter of one-million. Such a value seems excessive, but it is necessary to fully resolve the cubic midget at the center. I named the image "Cubic Revelation" because I was surprised at the detail lurking in the valleys of the cubic M-set. The rating of a 7 seems appropriate for such a surprising fractal. The downside is the render time, which is almost 2 hours on my tired old warhorse computer. A SOTA machine will calculate the image in under 1 hour, but I still recommend saving time and energy by downloading the finished image from the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Cloudy chilly weather here at Fractal Central on Saturday did not annoy the fractal cats, who have discovered that the task of a cat in a human world is chasing and catching mice. But mice are survivors, and in the mouse community word of dangerous cats gets around fast. No mice dared show themselves in Fractal Central. The cats ended the day by the radiator, washing their faces after their evening meal. The only mice they caught were in their dreams. (Cats do dream, but they never reveal what they dream about.) My day was uneventful. The work continues at a leisurely pace, but signs are on the horizon that a big job might be in the works in about 10 days. FOTD -- October 07, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image makes use of a formula revised by Gilles Nadeau and posted to the Fractint list on Friday. (I have changed the space between Neo and T-set in the formula name to an under- score. A space band in a formula name is not permitted.) The formula is designed to draw the three-dimensional triternion Mandelbrot set. It does this very well. But I notice that the images it draws are the same as those drawn by the type=quat formula in Fractint, which claims to draw slices of a four- dimensional quaternion M-set, but which I have always suspected actually draws slices of a circular three-dimensional object. It is apparent that the three-dimensional object being sliced by both formulas is the figure that is traced out when the M-set is rotated around its X-axis. The value I gave (p1) in today's image is +0.64952, which is the Y-value of the prominent valley of the large north bud of the M-set. And not surprisingly, the valley appears in distorted form in today's image. The large open areas at the top and bottom of the frame are oblique slices of the northern bud itself, or rather of the donut-shaped ring this bud traces out as it rotates around the X-axis. The chaos across the middle of the frame is the fringe of the detail on the main-bay side of the valley, grossly stretched as would be expected when slicing through the edge of a donut. What I would like to see is a way of rotating the slice 90 degrees, so that the circles of revolution are drawn, and also the fascinating ovals that must lie in between. Since the image has mathematical value but little artistic worth, I gave it no rating. FOTD -- October 07, 2006 (Not Rated) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: The earlier version of today's FOTD will not run because I left out the 'frm:' brfore the formula name. This version works all right. Today's image makes use of a formula revised by Gilles Nadeau and posted to the Fractint list on Friday. (I have changed the space between Neo and T-set in the formula name to an under- score. A space band in a formula name is not permitted.) The formula is designed to draw the three-dimensional triternion Mandelbrot set. It does this very well. But I notice that the images it draws are the same as those drawn by the type=quat formula in Fractint, which claims to draw slices of a four- dimensional quaternion M-set, but which I have always suspected actually draws slices of a circular three-dimensional object. It is apparent that the three-dimensional object being sliced by both formulas is the figure that is traced out when the M-set is rotated around its X-axis. The value I gave (p1) in today's image is +0.64952, which is the Y-value of the prominent valley of the large north bud of the M-set. And not surprisingly, the valley appears in distorted form in today's image. The large open areas at the top and bottom of the frame are oblique slices of the northern bud itself, or rather of the donut-shaped ring this bud traces out as it rotates around the X-axis.
