FOTD -- October 15, 2006 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: While studying yesterday's image this morning, I started wonder- ing what the Julia set of the scene might look like. To find out, I entered the parameters into the 'julzpower' formula and let the iterations fly. Just under 10 minutes later I had my answer. As expected, the Julia set of yesterday's scene closely resem- bles the scene itself. If anything, the herringbone pattern is even more pronounced, which is the reason I named the image "Herringbone Julia". I rated the image the same as yesterday's -- a 7.5. In my opinion, the image is worth it. The render time of over 10 minutes is a bit slow for today's busy fractalist. But at the FOTD web site, relief is at hand for those on the go. The temperature of 54F 12C was near perfect for viewing the trees, which are near their peak autumn colors. The fractal cats did not concern themselves with leaves however. They were more concerned with finding the warmest spot around for their afternoon nap. Anyone know if arbitrary precision math works w formula type fractals?

Does anyone know if arbitrary precision math works with formula type fractals in FractInt? The 20.0 docs say (pg 156): "Other known things that do not yet work with arbitrary precision are: biomorph, decomp, distance estimator, inversion, Julia-Mandel switch, history, orbit-in-window, and the browse feature." NOTE: the results you get from running makecfg.exe may differ if you run it from a Win9X shell or from the native boot-up DOS prompt. Make sure you run it in the environment you will be doing most of your fractint work from. Arbitrary precision - try zooming past about E+13 and see how ssllloooowwww it all becomes. Then try to get to E+89 or so. Yes, theoretically fractint can get you to about E+1600 but has anyone ever done it? .

FOTD -- October 14, 2006 (Rating 7.5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's curious scene is located deep in the seahorse valley of the large midget on the negative X-axis of the Z^(2.0000001)+C Mandeloid. On the surface, this Mandeloid is identical to the classic Mandelbrot set. But in the depths of its negative X-axis, strange things exist. That tiny difference in the exponent makes an immense difference in this one small area. Today's image shows an example of the strangeness. Nothing like today's image exists in the M-set. A midget with a herringbone pattern such as today's is unheard of in this area of that classic fractal, which holds only the familiar goofy- eyed 'brain-like' patterns. Some of these familiar patterns are included in today's image, but are relegated to the fringes of the scene. I named today's image "The Inner Sanctum". Something about it reminds me of an old radio show I enjoyed as a youngster. The rating of a 7 seemed a bit conservative for such an unusual image, but an 8 seemed a bit liberal. As a compromise, I rated the image at a 7.5. I included the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file to assure that the image is calculated at the correct magnitude. The render time of over 22 minutes borders on the slow side. Luckily, the completed image is posted for viewing on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> A freezing cold early morning was followed by a brisk but sunny afternoon here at Fractal Central. The temperature of 50F 10C did not bother the fractal cats, who spent the entire day indoors. My day was again busier than expected, but as today's image shows, I still found some spare time. FOTD -- October 13, 2006 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image shows a scene very deep in the negative X-axis region of the Z^(6.003)+C Mandeloid. I named it "The Unexpec- ted" because such an unusual midget is unexpected in Mandeloids of such a high order. The railroad tracks actually are in the image, but they have shrunk beyond resolution. The entire image is near the limit of resolution, which is the reason I included the mathtolerance entry in the parameter file. The rating of a 5 is justified. Midgets of an order over 4 are rarely worth the effort. The render time of 19 minutes can be ignored by visiting the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> and viewing the image there. Light rain at daybreak gave way to a brisk afternoon with scudding clouds and a temperature of 57F 14C. The fractal cats had an uneventful day. FOTD -- October 12, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's image takes us to the vicinity of the negative X-axis of the Z^(5.003)+C Mandeloid, where we examine a quintic midget at the limit of resolution. I named the image "Quintic Confusion" because of its extremely busy appearance. I was ready to rate the image at an 8, but I could not bring myself to honestly give such a high rating. The fractal picture is simply too disorgan- ized and muddy. I finally decided on a rating of 7. The math- tolerance entry in the parameter file is necessary to insure that the image is calculated at the correct magnitude. To create the image, I used the MandelbrotN formula, which I wrote a number of years ago to generate images of Mandeloids of any power. With this formula, the image renders in 14-1/2 min- utes. Curiously, when I checked the time the manzpower formula would take to calculate the image, I found it would take almost 19 minutes. The cobweb-like appearance apparently holds true of all Mandel- oids of the order n.003, where n is an odd positive integer. When n is even, the railyard effect appears. In the next FOTD, I'll see how large I can raise the value of n and still find an acceptable image. My day was slow, but not as slow as the past several days have been. I expect tomorrow to be another slow day, which should mean another interesting fractal. That fractal will appear in 24 hours.
