It is hypothesized that a sufficiently large number of monkeys banging away randomly at keyboards, eventually the great works of literature will be produced. Random chance meets chaos, complexity, and the butterfly effect. Similarly, a tornado sweeping through a junkyard can theoretically assemble a skyscraper or a jumbo jet, if the events are repeated a sufficient number of times. After all, we all evolved from primal slime, given enough time and chance. Suggestion Jim: Train your fractal cats to pound away on your keyboard, maybe put little pictures of flys or cockroaches on the keys; maybe get one of those mouses that really look like a mouse. Train them to associate a beautiful fractal image on the screen rewarded with a can of fresh bumble-bee tuna! Open up fractint and the formula parser. Then cut them loose and let it happen. Maybe you will never have to work again to produce the next FOTD !? Just a thought. (I've been drinking too much). Why are we here? What's it all about? JoTz

FOTD 18-10-06 (Double Trouble [6])

FOTD -- October 18, 2006 (Rating 6) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Today's fractal is kind of a mystery. I'm not sure if it is a real fractal or an artifact. The formula is simply a variation of the hypercomplex formula in fractint.frm, with a few more variable parameters added. The strangeness lies in the imag(p3) parameter, which is 10^(-012). It seems unlikely that such a small value could make such a big difference in the appearance of the parent fractal. I suspect that we may be dealing with some kind of mathematical imprecision here, but if so, I have no idea what it might be. Regardless, the fractals the formula creates appear as real as any other fractals. They may be zoomed into up to the limit of double-precision math, though the fact that the periodicity must be set to zero hints that the fractal-reality of this fractal might be questionable. It's a rather somber image, with a pronounced 3-D effect, which looks its best when the screen brightness is turned well down. I named the image "Double Trouble". It comes in two halves and there is always that troubling doubt about its validity. The rating of a 6 seems appropriate. The render time of just under one hour is necessary due to the large maxiter of 15000 and the necessity to turn off periodicity checking. But this time will be cut to 10 minutes or so on the fastest machines. If even this is too slow however, it would be best to wait until Paul posts the finished GIF image to the FOTD web site sometime later today. FOTD -- October 06, 2006 (Rating 5) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: I see on the list that fractals are no longer good enough. We now have superfractals. I wonder why we need superfractals when plain old fractals are infinite in an infinity of ways. Isn't this super enough? After all, it already takes a super-man to visualize the entire four-dimensional Z^2+C Julibrot in a single moment of time. But who am I to criticize? I am so far behind the times that I consider the movies made in the 30's 40's and 50's to be better than most of the current day movies, which to me seem to be created for desensitized viewers with the intelligence of a flea and the attention span of a mosquito, and appear to be rated by the number of explosions and the computerized effects they con- tain. But on the other hand, I might be remembering only the good movies made in the past, and forgetting the many junkers of that past time. Today's image contains no exploding gasoline drums or speeding cars doing impossible stunts. It does nothing but light up the screen and appear puzzling. It is a scene in the Z^(1.009)+C Mandeloid at a level 10 floors up the logarithmic ladder. I drew the parent fractal in an effort to find some kind of midget in a Mandeloid of order 1.009. I have challenged myself to find one. I may never find an actual midget, but as today's image implies, I am likely to stumble upon a few interesting fractal scenes while searching. I named today's image "Pebble beach". No, I am not planning on going surfing. I gave the image this name because the curious mix of order and chaos reminds me of pebbles lying on a beach at low tide. The rating of an average 5 might be a bit conserva- tive, but despite the unexpectedly varied low-order patterns, I can find nothing in the image actually above average. I calculated the image with the passes set to 'b'. With this particular image, passes=b is the fastest, and it is always the most fun to watch in action. FOTD -- October 16, 2006 (Rating 4) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: On today's fractal journey, we venture to the fractal that results when portions of Z^8 and Z^(-1.1) are combined. Giving the fractal a brief examination, we notice a small and very twisted quadratic midget. Today's scene is located near this larger midget. Today's image is outstandingly ordinary, leading me to name it "An Ordinary Fractal". An ordinary fractal image deserves an ordinary rating, and there is nothing extraordinary about today's rating of a barely acceptable 4. There is not much to be said about today's fractal, which speaks for itself -- in the silent language of numbers of course. The calculation of 2-1/2 minutes will try the patience of no one. FOTD 17-10-06 (Oblate Herringbone [7])

FOTD -- October 17, 2006 (Rating 7) Fractal visionaries and enthusiasts: Do the herringbone patterns so prominent in recent FOTD fractals exist in the odd planes of the Z^(2.0000001)+C Julibrot? As today's image shows, they most certainly do. Today's image skices the Julibrot in the Oblate direction, which is determined by the imag(c) and real(z) axes. In this direc- tion, the scene remains pretty much intact. The herringbones remain where they should be, while the tiny hole still lies near the center. The slices in other odd orientations are far less kind to the scene however, and distort things almost beyond recognition. I will show some of these other slices in upcoming images. I named today's image "Oblate Herringbone". The name is little more than a description of the scene. Considering the image a bit below the two previous herringbone images, I rated it at a 7. The render time of just under 11 minuted may be avoided by viewing the finished image from on the FOTD web site at: <http://home.att.net/~Paul.N.Lee/FotD/FotD.html> Increasing clouds and warmer temperatures here at New Fractal Central on Monday went un-noticed by the fractal cats, who still can not figure out why the carpets in the hallway no longer slip so easily. The big excitement of the day came when Nicholas tried to dislodge Cassie from her favorite warm radiator cover. He was rewarded for his effort by a swift hit on the top of the head. Luckily, all had been settled by the time evening snack time arrived. My day remained slow. The big job that was originally due in this morning has been delayed until Wednesday at the earliest. Undoubtedly, it will still be needed on the original date. The next FOTD will shine forth in glory 24 hours from now. The glory will be in the eye of the beholder. My current knowledge about Fractint's code is limited to what is described in Fractsrc.doc and Fractint.doc and a quick look at the formula type code in parser.c. Note that implementing long doubles for the fractal type 'formula' could remove some of the need to implement long doubles for each of the separate fractal types in Fractint since many of Fractint's built-in types can be calculated as formula files. I just read this in the 20.0 fractint.doc: Fractint Version 20.0 Page 154 -------------------------------- "Big as this zoom magnification is, your PC can do better using something called arbitrary precision math. Instead of using ***64 bit double*** precision to represent numbers, your computer software allocates as much memory as needed to create a data type supporting as many decimals of precision as you want."
