segmenting authority files for Horizon
Hello, We are just starting the authority cleanup process. We are a small health science college on Horizon 7.3.3. We have only 14,076 bibs and 57,735 authority records. I can't figure out if we should request our authority files be returned segmented into name, subject, series and title. Can anyone help me with this? Thank you. Hi Anna, That would be the same sequence that we used here. We sent out our full database and they came back in Bibliographic files (for titles) and Authority files (for name, series, and subjects). Hope this helps, Laurie Barnard, Anna wrote:

Anna, We are also on Horizon 7.3.3 and have been dealing with authority files for a long time-since 1990 when the company was part of Blackwell North America and we were on classic Dynix. We have them segmented into name, subject and series. (Also Children's subjects as well as the GSAFD genre headings). Generally we also keep the files limited to 10,000 records or less. It can be helpful to get separate name and subject files to help you determine whether a received auth record is being used as a name or subject. This is helpful with III, but Idon't know about Horizon. Also, there are separate procedures for loading names and subjects with III. /Ted Waller Carlyle Campbell Library Meredith College Raleigh, N.C./ Barnard, Anna wrote:

Thanks, Ted. Someone has told me that Horizon handles the authorities all together, as some are dual purpose. OK, Anna. I wish III handled them together too. With III we need two almost identical auth records if someone is a name and a subject. /Ted Waller Carlyle Campbell Library Meredith College Raleigh, N.C./ Barnard, Anna wrote:

I would look at how the records needed to be loaded into my file. If I have separate authority files for name, subject and series, than I would want the files separated to make loading easier. f I have one file I would not separate the files.
