I agree. The rehearsal footage was fantastic. From the point of view of a music student, watching his "conduction" techniques was fascinating. If you want to read some very intersting stuff about Zorn and his background, I suggest William Duckworth's 'Talking Music'. Great read, especially when Zorn describes the rather alarming way he started his massive record collection. John ---- Original message ----

Finally got my copy of the Bookshelf on top of the sky DVD.
I know this was discussed on the list before when the film did the rounds but for some of us this is our first opportunity to see it.
As a fan I loved the great footage of rehearsals and performances from the last ten years and, when talking, Zorn is more open than I have ever read him in the press. For anybody still intrigued by Cobra there is no explanation of the piece but the rehearsal film is very enlightening.
A couple of questions to those in the know. In the scenes where Zorn is talking about his life and work is he giving a talk or lecture? He seems to be looking around the room at a group.
The whole structure behind the film (the film makers search for a way to film and ultimately interview John Zorn (which she never achieves) with Zorn teasing her with promises on her answerphone) seems a little mendacious when its Tzadik that have released the DVD. But I may be wrong.

100% Seconded. A fantastic book, regardless of your particular interest in specific names. All the interviews are in-depth but very readable for non-musicians. Among the composers, Zorn, Glenn Branca, Steve Reich, Pauline Oliveros, Laurie Anderson, Lou Harrison, etc... What a list! Great read, especially when Zorn describes
the rather alarming way he started his massive record collection.
Sure! And they were vinyls!! I tried that method twice. The first time I came out of the superstore with "Elegy" under my shirt. The second one I was caught with some "Filmworks" volumes! I decided I'd go to the university and leave my criminal career aside! :-) Best, Efrén del Valle n.p: Sonic Youth "Sonic Nurse" (Geffen) ______________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! lanza su nueva tecnologÃa de búsquedas ¿te atreves a comparar? http://busquedas.yahoo.es
Where can I get hold of a copy of this DVD from the UK? I've tried amazon, but I don't have a credit card, only debit, so the oversees suppliers are out of bounds. j4.porter@student.qut.edu.au wrote: I agree. The rehearsal footage was fantastic. You can get your copy from the Tzadik website, or what's the same, from Downtown Music Gallery, and probably from the Squidco website as well (www.squidco.com), although I haven't checked it.
