HatArt, perhaps. But a good distributor has that power, which gets their stuff into the stores (especially the stores that don't return Joe Morris new disc three weeks after it comes out to make more room for that new Metheny product) has more power.
i'd like to point out for the record that there are some folks out there who will show up at the store to take away _both_ the latest Joe Morris and Pat Metheny. Mark -- the problem is that the retailers rarely see it that way. Most jazz on indie labels gets returned (to the distributor) rather quickly, except at your really good mom and pop's and a few bigger stores where jazz has some kind of bigger role in the community. sh
ya, i didn't actually miss your point. i was just pointing out that it _is_ possible to like both artists. it is definitely a sad state of affairs that even tower, which used to have a decent jazz selection, has gone down the toilet. i used to 'troll' for stuff there many years ago. now, what with the lack of selection and prices at $16.99-$18.99...forget it! when i'm looking for a more 'diverse' selection i don't even thing of going there. my 'local' mom & pop store is Bull Moose Music over in portsmouth, nh. it's the amoeba records of the seacoast. mark skip Heller wrote:
