5.20 Scanner/Stephen Vitiello The idea was to record sounds around Victoriaville and sample them live. But Victoriaville, a prairie town of about 35,000, just doesnt sound that interesting. Wetfish Because They Speak French in Quebec Maybe the surprise hit of the fest. Two male vocalists (Tuva and beatbox), percussion, violin, cello and electronics, and a video track (done up like a DVD with different sections to select) about Hollywood v Quebecois film. Very funny, and musically pretty interesting. David Kristian/Sam Shalabi/Alexandre St-Onge electronics, bowed bass on the floor and quiet scrapey guitar and oud. Nice, not compelling. The other instance of an interesting instrument used uninterestingly. But is it worse to do nothing on a guitar than to do nothing on an oud? Merzbow/Pan Sonic First time seeing Merzbow, and I didnt have the same reaction that many voiced. I wanted brutality, and I wasnt that touched. Id heard plenty of digital sounds at this point, and I could have used someone putting a hacksaw through a heavily miked piece of metal, but I suppose M dont do that no more. Id like to think Pan Sonic were to blame for the dance beats, but Im not sure that was the case. Next year: Victo turns 20. It is on the Taboo and Exile CD. It is Ribot and Frith on guitar, Laswell on bass and Dave Lombardo on Drums. The CD is incredible. I highly recommend it. Seth

5.19 Peter Kowald/William Parker My Victo friend Don cursed us New Yorkers, saying were spoiled and we dont get excited because weve seen people play hundreds of times. Hes probably right. Of course this was great. Annie Gosfield Ewa7 Hmm. A Tzadik artist I dont recall ever hearing mentioned here. I think Annies quite a good sampler player/arranger, but not as strong at composing around her sampled structures. This was pretty good. Havent heard the record. Alan Silva/Oluyemi Thomas I vowed about 18 months ago never to see Silva play again unless he was playing bass. He was, and it was good. Thomas was interesting, too. And they played a very different set than a few nights later at Vision. Eugene Chadbourne/Rene Lussier My first time seeing Lussier, whose records I really enjoy. He is the perfect foil for Chad. Dont let the humor make you think theres not a lot of love there. Cecil Taylor/Bill Dixon/Tony Oxley Worst Cecil gig Ive ever seen. That said, it was pretty good. A good duo, as a fellow z-lister said afterward. Pierre Hebert/Bob Ostertag Between Science and Garbage Is Ostertag a musician? I like what he does. For this, he created an audio and video interactive set-up for sampler/looper (him) and an animator. The piece began with Ostertag recording himself opening pop cans and bags of chips, and eating and drinking. The animation, which looped back on itself and created a huge, scattered, nervous energy, was about trash apple cores and circuit boards. The whole while I was thinking how horrible, really horrible, it is that art with an environmental message comes off as dated or soft or hippie or something. A great Bill Laswell record. What happened to those btw? Back from the days when the boys were heavy into hardcore and punk, this is probably the most agressive Laswell record, next to "Guts Of A Virgin". And talk about a hardcore lineup: PainKiller + Blind Idiot God + Buckethead + Bootsy Collins & Bernie Worrel + EYE. This album has some incredible vocals by EYE. Never thought screaming could be so damn funky. Oh, also features Buckethead who is actually amazing on this record. If this was the only record he had ever made, he would have become a hero. Unfortunately ho chose to poison the world by doing the same, and the same, and the same, over and over and over and over, and over again. And again. One of two off tunes, but all in all a great album. Again, extremely hard, but with several surprises (organ solo, a long funky track, a bit of dub out of nowhere...) Ih, yes, think I will infact go listen to it right now. Hamid Drake/Gerry Hemingway Very odd pairing. Hemingway is usually such a subtle player, but Hamid brought the beast out in him. Even got him playing an African drum and yelling. Dense, good. Polwechsel Maybe my favorite set of the fest. Unbelievable restraint. Gorgeous. I was talking to John Butcher later and telling him that my band (The ADD Orchestra, new release Little Pig Nose available on Batterrie Records HA!) have tried playing prolonged, quiet improvisers, and that I find it really difficult to not push it. He said I find it nearly impossible. Satoko Fujii/Tatsuya Yoshida weve already talked about. But just great. Might be my choice for the cd release out of the fest. Fujii paying incredibly close attention, and great to hear Yoshida in an accoustic setting. Aki Takase/Konrad Bauer OK, so I stayed up until about 5 every night there, and at some point you got to catch up a little. Everyone raved about the solo trombone piece, though, which sounded to me like warm-up exercises. Keith Tippetts Tapestry First Weaving I dont really know Tippetts stuff. I know everyone else does, but I dont. I love Maggie Nichols, though, and she had a very nice prolonged segment that bowed to Marlene Dietrich. Overall, there were parts I liked, and parts that made it difficult to remember that there were parts I liked. If you want to stay on my good side, not singing about marigolds is probably a good idea. The Necks. I love The Necks. Their stuff really is quite diverse, despite the formulaic set-up (simple riff, evolve slowly over 45-60 minutes, fade). This time they worked up quite a fury. Just the strength and stamina the bassist and pianist have is astounding. 5.16 Mruta Mertsi, Andre Pappathomas conducting There just arent enough avant choirs, and although the Finnish screaming choir Mieskuoro Huutajat huutagat.org blows them out of the water, big ups for trying. 20 people on stage, about half as many ideas. Fred Frith/Joan Jeanrenaud/Miya Masaoka/Larry Ochs All-star line-up. Promising, or scary. Most interested to see ex-Kronos cellist Jeanrenaud in her new improv role. Parts were good, but sometimes she seemed to be looking for something to do. Had an interesting conversation with a coupla z-listers over dinner one night about disappointing use of unusual instruments. I love koto, and Im not sure what Masaoka is doing much of the time, but I wish she was playing koto. Frith of course is the master. He served as back-up band for the three soloists. Ochs understands what many improvisers miss: that taking long breaks while the others play will just make you parts shine more. Jerry Granelli/Jeff Reilly Iron Sky Granellis a blast, and it was a lot of fun to watch him circle the room and play several very large metal sculptures, made by Nova Scotian John Little. The sculptures and Granellis charisma dominated, however. It would be better to see the duo with just trap drums. Wow. Set Fire to Flames Uh, is this the same Godspeed family that people on the z-list make such a big deal of? Id say I dont get it, but I really doubt theres anything there to get. Lee Ranaldo/William Hooker/Alan Licht/Ulrich Krieger/DJ Olive Text of Light Ranaldo, I think, is the best (only) avant improviser in SY. All of this was good, though longer than necessary. The Stan Brakhage films were interesting enough, but if thats what dictated the nearly 90-minute length, they should have been cut. Krieger, however, was great. Who is that guy? There is a Zorn song that I downloaded called Sacrifist. It is rock oriented with a noisy guitar (Arto? Ribot? Frisell?). Does any one know which album this comes from? It doesn't sound familiar. Zach
