I really like this album. Efrén is right in that it does have a dose of prog in the writing, but I am a big dork for that king of stuff. Overall it is a combination of klezmer, prog, traditional sephardic melodies, and surf. I think it is a pretty solid album. Matt

Endless Summer is an essential purchase and a great starting point. Fennesz/Grubbs Recs/Ribot y los Cubanos Postizos + Joe Bataan

Hi there, I know you guys will point me to the appropiate direction with Christian Fennesz and David Grubbs. I've heard some stuff from both and they sounded pretty good, but I couldn't really identify those recordings. Any good starters? Is Fennesz as interesting as they depict him or is it just some kind of annoying O'Rourke-like-hype?! I thank you in advance. Totally unrelated, last Friday I attended a show by Ribot's Prosthetic Cubans plus Joe Bataan, about who I inquired several days ago here on the list. I was wondering if somebody else has seen the Cubanos recently and what your thoughts are. I couldn't believe what I was seeing (in the most negative terms). The lineup has changed considerably, with Brad Jones on bass, EJ Rodriguez on drums, some Latin percussionist, Curtis Fowlkes and some (unknown to me) lady on trombone and Ribot. The whole thing seems to have turned into an extremely "for the fun of it"-thing. Of course, there's nothing wrong about it, unless you caught them live four or five years ago with the original lineup of Anthony Coleman, Roberto J. Rodriguez, etc, minus brasses. That was for me the real deal. After four or five songs, quite unremarkable, Joe Bataan, his wife and his daughter came up onstage and the thing turned into Joe Batan & Family plus backing band. The guy's OK, he's got a good voice, he's a lot of fun and he knows how to heat up the crowds, but again, that wasn't the Prosthetic Cubans I/we expected -I saw the faces of the people and it was very easy to make distinctions between newcomers and puzzled non-newcomers. As if that weren't enough, they played in the famous... I mean, infamous Forum de las Culturas in Barcelona, an awful place dominated by concrete, water, bad & expensive food, speculation, senseless shows, fake pan-culturalism, far too long walks to anywhere you want to go, etc... All in all, a forgettable night. I know some other listers were there on Friday and Saturday. I'd be very curious to know their impressions. Fennesz and Grubbs

There are two absolutely wonderful Fennesz songs that I have heard recently and both are duets with David Sylvian. "A Fire in the Forest" is on Sylvian's "Blemish". "Transit" is on Fennesz's "Venice". These two tracks feature Sylvian's vocals with Fennesz's sounds. They are both fantastic, but the one on "Blemish" is better. The other tracks on "Venice" are pretty good, a few approach heavy rotation listenability. But some of the tracks have a vaguely reminiscent overtone of crappy new age ambience to them, tempered with an "avant garde" edge. In case you were wondering, this is not a compliment. "Venice" is better than earlier Fennesz releases. "Endless Summer", which got high praise at its release pales next to "Venice", and suffers more strongly from the weaknesses in "Venice". Both "Blemish" and "Venice" are worth buying for the Sylvian/Fennesz duets alone and "Blemish" has Sylvian singing to the playing Derek Bailey as well, which is also a wonderful thing to hear. As for post gastr del sol Grubbs, I have heard "Banana Cabbage, Potato Lettuce, Onion Orange", "The Thicket", "The Coxcomb/Avocado Orange", and another one or two but I forget which. "Banana Cabbage, Potato Lettuce, Onion Orange" is a slow, semi-minimal recording of pieces for guitar. Too slow and sparse for me. I listened to it a couple times when it came out in 1997 but haven't felt compelled to listen again since then. "The Thicket" is watered-down gastr del sol, just like some of O'Rourke's post-gds releases. All you will say after listening to this is that gds would never have released an album of this inferior quality. "The Coxcomb" is some awful adaptation of some story with terrible voices. This is the only Grubbs release that should be out-right avoided. So, all in all, my opinion of Grubbs post-gastr del sol repertoire can be summed up as okay and perhaps enjoyable for a listen or two, but not overly compelling. That's my underwhelming report.
