Hamid Drake

One of my all-time favorite Hamid Drake performances has to be DKV "Live in Wels and Chicago", amazing! His work with Fred Anderson also comes to mind. Another nice album that showcases his sound would be Brotzmann/Drake "The Dried Rat Dog". Hamid is simply fantastic! Scrapbook is one of the best recordings this year! If its not too late to contribute to this thread. There is a live CD of God (without Zorn) called Loco. It was recorded in the crypt of "St Mary's Church" London and has Broadrick on guitar. Its on Pathological records. The recording was from 1991. There were also a couple of 7 and 12 inch releases: Breach Birth, Meathead and another album from 1993 called Consumed on Sentrax but I never found that. I saw them live and they were the real thing. Not Quite Re: Hamid Drake

And by "not quite" I really mean "not at all".... If any of you Ken Vandermark fans missed his performance at Chicago's Jazz Fest, you missed something wonderful. If for just the cellist alone (a fella by the name of Fred Lonberg-Holm.... check him out!), and they were all very approachable after the set. The group was the standard Vandermark 5 with a guest bassist, cellist, cornet, second drummer and another set of reeds. They played a 45-minute set, three pieces. And then some more traditional musicians went up and played standards for the rest of the night, as is Jazz Fest's M.O. I think. But each year (thankfully) there's one good act in Grant Park. Masada was the crowning point of 1999 for me. After seeing Hamid Drake "join" Painkiller I've become more interested in his work. Where is a good place to begin? By chance, yesterday or the day before that, I heard a very cool piece he did with William Parker, as a duo I believe. Slightly funky, with perhaps a bit of an afrobeat feeliing. What could it be?
