I saw the Gift live 2 yrs ago and Cyro Baptista was playing the jaw harp. >>>I've wondered the same thing. I've wondered the same thing. IAO: who does what?

Heyhey I was just listening to IAO (totally forgot about it, haven't listened to it in ages). OK, so i'm wondering, who plays what? We know the obvious: Cyro: perc Patton: vox Laswell: bass Jennifer Charles: vox Saft: keys/synth Pugliese: perc/drums Cohen: bass Rebecca Moore: vox I'm wondering what Zorn does. Maybe some additional vox, percussion, maybe even mirco-computer-synth thing on "The Clavicle of Solomon"??? But what i'm really wondering is: 1. Who is 'Beth Hatton', & what does she do? & also 2. Who plays guitar on "Leviathan"? Could it be Laswell? Or Saft? Or maybe samples that Saft manipulates?? Maybe even Zorn? whoever it is it's cool, fukked up & freaky! anyone got ideas? i've heard the same about this record. "it's a waste of money"...and so on. i don't have it. but the melvins have done things like this in the past. for example, their album "prick" (amphetamine reptile) consists of mostly field recordings. one song cracks me up, it begins with a spoken introduction introduction and then allows a "moment of.......pure.....digital.........silence". brilliant. i think that the reason why the melvins do these things could be: a) to alienate certain listeners that they might not want to attract, or b) to do something truly different and all their own. it is nearly impossible to do something new now adays, and perhaps these recordings are not the first ever in their field, but they are certainly "experimental". as john cage said once, experimental music is not necessarily new to the composer/performer, but it can be experimental if it is an experiment for the listener; something they have never heard before. therefore the act of listening becomes what is experimental. so i suppose it is not necessarily false if someone who might not be as schooled as the zornlisters in music calls radiohead "experimental". if the listening process is an experiment for them, let them have their experiment. but getting back to the point, i think the melvins are trying to live up to a truly experimental reputation. they didn't know what the reaction would be if they released these albums. it was an experiment. possibly musical, possibly social. but all in all, uniquely their own. -adam morosky n.p. vincent gallo "recordings of music for film" _________________________________________________________________ Protect your PC - get McAfee.com VirusScan Online http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

So I just bought a copy of the live Melvins disc a couple of days ago, and threw it on during the trip home from work tonight, and I have to ask (since there are a fair number of Patton/Ipecac archivists/completists/apologists here): was there some pressing reason for releasing this twaddle, or is it pretty much the twenty-dollar joke on the audience that it sounds like? Thankfully, the other purchase of the day, Emergency's Loveman Plays Psychedelic Swing, has been a much better listen thus far (I've heard about half of it today): electric country/blues versions of jazz standards, with a bit of room for all of the players to stretch out and take a not-totally-wanky solo here and there. I'm almost picturing Barry Adamson taking a run at Ground-Zero's Plays Standards album shortly after cranking out... what was that movie soundtrack of his called? The one that was literally all dust devils and people getting shot in the desert? "Delusion"? The first of the disc reminds me of that. -me

I stuck it out in the hope that something other than earshock would result, but it didnt' work for me. I enjoyed NERVE WHEEL more, but i would have enjoyed VICTIMS FAMILY more... In my obnoxious opinion, niether group were worthy of opening for the RUINS...but who really is? RUINS in Seattle

I saw the Seattle show at Chop Suey and it about took my head off! I only have earlier RUINS (graviyaunosch & stonehenge) and was somewhat unprepared for the full blown attack. The bass player was as astonishing as Yoshida's drumming! They did the Black Sabbath medley and what may have been the prog-rock medley as well as 'stonehenge' and one other one that sounded really familiar (acid blue?) but the rest was unfamiliar to me and AWESOME. they came back and did at least two encores, but i had to leave during the second one for the drive back to Bellingham. Any recommendations on more recent releases? Aquarius has two live CDs listed, which is better?? Friday August 8, 2003 8pm $8 at Tonic {NYC} as part of the FESTIVAL OF NEW TRUMPET MUSIC, co-curated by Dave Douglas and Roy Campbell, Jr: ::GREG KELLEY/SEAN MEEHAN/VIC RAWLINGS:: Greg Kelley: trumpet Sean Meehan: snare drum Vic Rawlings: adapted cello, open-circuit electronics TONIC, 107 Norfolk St. {btn. Delancey & Rivington} NYC www.tonicnyc.com ....................................................... Greg Kelley and Sean Meehan met in Baltimore in 1995 and spoke very few words and made no (positive) impression on each other. They met again in early 1999 in Meehan's native New York and after the initial reaction of "Oh... that guy," they found they got along famously. By that time, Greg was back in Boston and had started playing with autodidactic cellist and instrument-maker Vic Rawlings (with whom he performs in countless groups including the austere explorations of the undr quartet, the visceral excess of the Laurence Cook Disaster Unit, and the improvising electroacoustic octet the BSC [CD forthcoming on Grob]). The three shared a mutual aesthetic of focused sonic/spacial investigations and after playing near each other on several occasions (but not at the same time) they finally consummated their shared admiration at a concert in 2000. This performance is inspired by the sounds of ghosts caught on magnetic tape. {Greg Kelley} is a graduate of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and is 1/2 of Nmperign, 1/3 of Heathen Shame, and 1/4 of the Undr Quartet. He is also the Minister of Fanfares for the Kingdoms of Elgaland-Vargaland. {Sean Meehan} has travelled the world collaborating with musicians, dancers and at least one avant-garde flower arranger. He is a frequent collaborator of Tamio Shiraishi and Toshimaru Nakamura and has created a series of unplayable performance objects which activate compositions in the mind. {Vic Rawlings} is an active musician and instrument maker. He performs using an adapted cello of his own devising and a twisted complex of rewired electronics. New Cdrs on Incus

Some of you may be interested to know that Incus has released 2 new cdrs in their cdr series. (The numbering reflects a new trend to split the cdrs into two sub-series, the solo guitar series and the not-solo-guitar series.) No. 4 in the solo guitar series. Filmed 5 tracks Audio tracks of Anthony Howell's video magazine grey suit, recorded Cardiff 1993 No. 5 in the other series Barbarian Derek Bailey guitar Pat Thomas electronics Steve Noble turntables Same cost and ordering procedure as before and as appears on the Incus website. However, these new releases (or the previous one) don't appear on the website. I only found out about it because Incus snail mailed me an advertisement.
