wav files are far superior in quality than mp3's, but unfortunatley about 10 times the size as well. wav are so true sounding that it is the common file format used by professional digital recording studios and systems like pro tools. i have found wavlab to be the best program for extraction thus far. i got a cracked version from kazaa. i can hear a serious drop in audio quality with mp3's, but the size is convenient. when properly encoded (for high quality) mp3's are still descent, but wave is the way to go. -mike

Hi Mike, You might want to check out the Hothouse (South Loop) for good jazz and international shows. www.hothouse.net. In the next month there will be shows by 8 Bold Souls, Don Byron, David Murray, and Eddie Palmieri. The Empty Bottle also has good shows, usually with the typical Chicago groups (Vandermark) and some really good European acts (Brotzmann is playing in March). They also tend to get the better known rock/pop/folk bands like Angels of Light and Mountain Goats. Schubas and Abbey Pub are good for rock music. In the past I've seen Smog and Bright Eyes/Simon Joyner there, others like US Maple play there. And make sure to check out the free concerts at the Chicago Cultural Center. Lots of free classical, plus they have a New Music/New Millenium series, where they've hosted Steve Lacy & Mal Waldron, Fred Van Hove, Brotzmann Tentet, Gunter Baby Sommer, Carlos Zingaro, Carlos Actis Dato, Uri Caine. http://www.cityofchicago.org/Tour/CulturalCenter/ There are lots of other places too (like 3030 and the Candlestick Maker). Hey guys, The Grammies are an award given out by the record INDUSTRY, not some aesthetic minded organization. Awards nearly always have more to do with how an album affected the Industry, rather than artistic merit. In this way they're not unlike the Oscars. The Oscars however, do have rules about who gets to vote in many of the comparatively esoteric categories. In the Grammies this MAY be the case for some of the technical awards, but for all of the awards to best artists and recordings in all categories, EVERY member of (I think it's) NARAS is eligible to vote. So, especially in categories like jazz and classical musics, with which a VERY small proportion of the voting members are familiar, awards tend to go to artists & recordings with VERY familiar names and have VERY little to do with the relative artistic merit of the nominees. You can, of course, complain all you want, but it's (perhaps even) more pointless than complaining about, say, the Oscar for best foreign-language film, for which the nomination process is SO screwed up that it's a miracle when half-way decent films are nominated, let alone winners, in the category.
