Brian's still around, but he's been really busy with a MAJOR project that has called for travel. He's active on at least one jazz-related BBS I'm aware of, and recently attended the recording sessions for an upcoming Keith Rowe / John Tilbury 2CD set on Erstwhile and provided a scintillating preview on another mailing list. Naked City in the UK

Grrr. I was 19 or 20 at the time (89/90) and picked it up because Frith played on it (!) and there was a very odd review of it in The Wire (by Mark Sinker, I think). From memory of another old issue of the Wire I picked up, they played in London, Manchester (the RNCM) and a couple of other places. Like The 21st Centruy Schizoid Band, I'd welcome seeing them play live, but hope to hell they won't bother with any new recordings. Or 2003 live albums (ones fromtheir original era are fine). Considering Zony Mash keeps several of the Naked City classics in his repertoire Sex Fiend, Triggerfingers & Party Girl are regular highlights, one could assume these would make it into the setlists. Also Pigpen used to cover Poisonhead and Wayne has even led several Torture Garden performances in Seattle with the regulars. I would say he is ready to go! Also Bill seems to have reverted to a more brooding electric sound with his band with Tony Scherr & Kenny Wollesen. Yada, yada. Someone buy me a plane ticket, please! The music oughta speak for itself, regardless of any theoretical apparatus surrounding it. That's not to say that the words of the author can't be helpful in drawing new ideas from it, but they're probably more necessary in a lot of Cage's work than in Zorn's Cobra. Cobra is a brilliant revolution in composed improvisation and it can be heard in the recordings (even the Knitting Factory release that Zorn apparently disowned). Not only does it build a logical extension on the ideas of Cage, Stockhausen and others who problematized the role of composer, but it bears the stamp of Zorn's own jump-cut aesthetic -- AND allows for individuated musician's voices to be enunciated while building progressions and repetitions into an extensive, vital musical territory. The chapter on Cobra in the 2nd edition of Bailey's 'Improvisation' book covers the basic ideas pretty well. The cards pictured in the liner notes of the HatArt and Tzadik editions don't reveal the complexity of the piece -- they don't make a whole lot of sense without the rules to go with them. Claudua Heuermann's Zorn Documentary?! What is this?! If it's true, I am personally very excited about the reformation of Naked City but only if I'll get a chance to see them! Otherwise, if I can't see them, no-one can! I didn't get a chance to see them first time round (did Naked City ever play the U.K? I don't think so).
