New live Ruins

I just recieved the catalog update from the Downtown Music gallery and saw this: RUINS - Live In Guang Zhou - China (Noise Asia 13) This live recording by Ruins was recorded from their live performance at Windflower Bar in Guang Zhou, China on August 13, 2000. It consists of 19 tracks embracing most of the brilliant key pieces that night, reliving the show for the audience two years later. "Improvisation" was played with local guest artist, Wang Lei, the one and only improvised work in the show. "I ate Yue Bing (mooncake) this morning" and "Eating seven kinds of Chang Fen (traditional cantonese food)" were too just much and were spontaneously composed in the morning of the performance. CD only release for $15. Has anybody heard it yet? hola efrén y ricardo, i'm back on the list after finally figgering how to get back on the digest (thanks, smithy) their first performances in nyc at the pink pony were superb- immediate connection. and kowald has been seen a lot in nyc these days, often playing w/ assif- so, highly recommended. love to all steve koenig n.p.: ivo perelman/sclavis- ventriloquist- leo n.r.: zornlists Hi, Ricardo, you're not to miss the Assif Tsahar/Pete Kowald/Sunny Murray performance on July 25! As a couple of y'all know I'm within easy reach of e-mail, so I'm responding to a bunch of things at once here. In every style of music that has some kind of community of listeners, there's a willingness on the part of those who participate to make significant distinctions between and among performances that sound virtually identical to listeners outside that community of listeners, i.e., those who haven't bought into the style under consideration. This is equally true for fans and performers of "rockabilly" as it is for fans and performers of "avant garde jazz" or anything else. Most, if not all, of the discussion about which musicians are really just repeating themselves can only make sense if you are ignoring this point, unconsciously for those listeners who, say, never cared for the Stones or King Crimson, willfully, for those who think they have developed a sensibility and/or sensitivity, beyond those of the musicians involved. Even (which term I use here with some conscious sense of irony) in the avant garde, musicians end up mining the same comparatively small area. There are very very few musicians in this field that I can think of as continually coming up with different approaches rather than refining an ongoing approach or putting their consistent approach into a new context by doing pretty much the same thing with different collaborators, different equipment, etc. The need to describe this kind of work as somehow infinitely creative without taking into account the very real stylistic, genre, cultural, social, etc. limitations that every artist in any field, not just music, deals with, is sort of naively Romantic. I probably won't see any responses to this til late Sunday night, so don't take my absence from any of the continuing discussion this prompts as ignoring it. Bests, Herb

You'd think subscribing to the zornlist digest format would cut down on the email intake - what is all this side-tangent content drivel about? Do all you regulars really work in the music industry or is corporate America's efficiency ranking being dragged down with each new posting... I'm kidding of course - one person's incoherent rambling is another's gospel, uncapitalized "g" there... I'm on a bender since there is seems to be an increasing tide complaining about Frisell recordings of late, along with Horvitz's 4+1 ensemble. What gives? Y'all miss Joey on the drums keepin' Frisell on the edgy side? Musician's move on and do their own thing - so yeah, Mr. left of the left dial guitarist has moved into something akin to mainstream - if we are keeping within the context of zornlist land, of course. And the 4+1 Ensembles latest "From a Window" ? I held off getting that one for a while. Foolish me! Every track flippin' rules, even as about half of them pick up themes from previous recordings. signed (wink wink) desperately seeking good music ps: any London Saxopohonic fans out there? Any news on post (Moondog's) sax pax for a sax release? another ps: pros/cons on the latest Derek Bailey recording of standards? Seems promising...

Can't we just say Brotzmann is a great free-jazz stylist and his style is popular? ------------------------------------ Well, that's kind of funny to say free-jazz is popular, but in the avant-garde listening community the "newness" (which still must remain acceptable somehow though- say with lots of apparent forethought and not a bit of whimsy or humor) can count more than the quality. In that sense appearance is just as important there as it is in the mainstream. So some might be missing that Brotzmann is playing better than he ever has (and I'm not sure that's true, just an example) because we've tagged him and his kind with their importance being something other than just well-played music. Just like in the big money music where image can obscure the music, there's a bunch of people who might not really be listening due to some surface distraction. And some of the artists aren't really playing up to snuff either due to similar factors, but that's a different issue. But the idea that we may not really be listening and they might not really be playing and the truth of the whole thing is sidelined by shallower concerns, just sounds awful.
