That one I had to listen a few times before it grew on me... But I really hate Pocket Universe, except maybe one song. -----Original Message----- From: yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of vtchatman@webtv.net Sent: Monday, March 01, 2004 4:37 PM To: yello@mailman.xmission.com Subject: [Yello] zebra anyone like me who were turned off by zebra? i havnt heard anything else by yello since, am i missing anything? _______________________________________________ Yello mailing list Yello@mailman.xmission.com http://mailman.xmission.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/yello
While many of the tracks of Zebra are in a different vein than what WE (You and I) are used to. However, I cannot find any fault with the likes of NIGHT TRAIN, FAT CRY, even DO IT. In fact , Night Train is an incredible track (Pun actually intended:). It is a more dance oriented album, but that is even stated by Boris in an interview regarding the album (Link to it was on the board a couple of weeks ago). One of the things that I like most about musicians and bands is that when they grow, they tryout new things, explore new avenues, improving their sound and ideas along the way (ie: THE POLICE, YELLO, DEPECHE MODE, BLANCMANGE, TRACY CHAPMAN...) Unfortunately, there are some bands that released 3 or more albums without ant advancement in their sound or lyric content (no maturity/growth/development) between albums. A perfect example of this is the ART OF NOISE. If you played one track from each of their albums to someone and asked them to put them in order of earliest to most recent, they couldn't do it because they all sound the same. DON"T miss-understand me, I really enjoy them, but there is no creative advancement between each Album.(Lenny Kravits is guilty of this too, but still good music). Zebra is one such excursion that, as I can see doesn't DO IT for some (many), but I... I"M IN LOVE with Yello and still enjoy everything they have done. I hope I wasn't a TREMENDOUS PAIN to you all, Hmmmmmm. That album came out TEN years ago! Laurens van Graft The Grip Guy All your gymnastics grip needs right here! if by the Police you include Sting - I'm with Ozzy on him ("It could be worse, I could be Sting") My sister loaned me the first season of the Osbournes (I'm too cheap to pay for cable) and I have just been howling laughing at that stuff. And, I find Ozzy to be rather wize. Of course, if you don't wise up at some point - you die... at that rate. How about the growth of the Beatles? U2? I have thought Depressed Mode sounded basically depressed all along. .. but I do agree as much as I revere Art of Noise I can't honestly say I saw any growth. Talking about growth - ever listened to Pink Floyd's EAAARLY EARLY stuff??? They turned into a completely stagnant, tho cool, band after that way out experimental stuff. -----Original Message----- From: yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Laurens van Graft Sent: Monday, March 01, 2004 9:06 PM To: The moon: beautiful. Nice to hear input from someone else that submitted their photo to Jon's World Y'd page!! Where are the rest of you?? (you too Jon!) I wonder if Ozzy's reference to Sting was about his virtual theft of his wealth by his old financial advisor whom he gave signing rights to (big mistake) ... Yah, I left 'Floyd and Genesis off on purpose, Genesis due to P. Collins, (is it Genesis or Phil that published that song) even though they were heading in the advancement direction for a good long time, when Rutherford and Gabriel left, you couldn't discern any difference between Genesis' and Phil's releases! I really liked Genesis too,... U2 I left off due to their jump to Ultra-commercialism (along with the likes of Madonna, C.A., B.S.). Anything after War, while still good, and advancing, leaned towards the Sell out (almighty $$$$... Come to my Concert, It'll only cost you $150.00/seat in the poor visibility seats in the nosebleed section, and that T-shirt 'l be 50 Bucks) I didn't need to mention Bowie, but he is a good example of advancement(oops, I just did). we could go on and on and on and on ....but I think we understand each other On Mar 2, 2004, at 10:51 AM, Tasha wrote:

i must admit i liked U2's "McPhisto", and I think I only paid fifty something dollars for seats behind the stage... didn't even bother looking at shirts. Also saw Pink Floyd for I think $62, floor seat, if you squinted you could actually kinda recognize David Gilmore. Bought that Tshirt - was disappointed in the cheap quality of it. David Bowie - my gosh - saw him here in Austin when he came through on the Nine Inch Nails Tour! GOD that was great! He got a horrid review, and the interlude where he and NIN played and sang together got the worst review, but I thought it was so great. I have read NIN got much inspiration from Bowie's mood setting tones... I think Bowie's "Outside" is my most recent (Heart's Filthy Lesson) man that is weird especially when you read the little story in the booklet that goes along with the CD. well i know my photo is lame, but this list has been fun and i want to participate... in what small way i can. :) And most recently, I purchased a black polo with a big yello Y on it... the quality of the product is exceptional. -----Original Message----- From: yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Laurens van Graft Sent: Tuesday, March 02, 2004 11:11 AM To: The moon: beautiful. the flashlight trick reminds me of a Picasso I had in a photography book back at UT, dang I wish I did't give that book to my ex-girlfriend's ex-husband. Oh well. He deserved it. That was a great book, whish I could remember the title... So in the pic of the DJ - I couldn't see any reference to Yello. Was there any, or did I miss it? GR3G is still my favorite. You got some neat toys. -----Original Message----- From: yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:yello-bounces+tourguide=austexecotours.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Laurens van Graft Sent: Wednesday, March 03, 2004 9:09 PM To: The moon: beautiful. You have a valuable point here. Although I didn't like Zebra or Pocket Universe that much, I had to admit, that I wouldn't have liked the idea of doing their early albums over and over again. And the latest couple of albums I have liked (I've already grown to like The Eye), although they are different from Solid Pleasure etc. I'm sure must of you agree, that there is this special Boris Blank touch that makes their music identifiable. And of course, few bands have singers like Dieter Meier. That hasn't changed over the years, and it shouldn't change either. -- Jussi Salmi http://staff.cs.utu.fi/~jussalmi/
