Top 10 results

Hi folks, Sorry for being a bit late in regards to sending this email... Well, to make a long story short, only 5 people submitted their top 10 albums & songs. IMHO, five people is not a good representative of the list. So, be sure to take these results with a grain of salt. Someone pointed out that Yello doesn't have much more than 10 albums if you disregard the remix albums (like 80-85 or Eccentrix or Essential). Doh! Perhaps I should have limited it to top 5 or top 3 instead. I figure there's a variety of reasons behind the top 10 lists. Mostly, I think it's because it's a labourous process to actually sit down and think up 10 items of anything, and then send it off via email. So, in the future, I'll consider making a webpage where people would just enter their email address (for validation purposes only), and then they just select which songs & albums they liked the best - limited to 5 or 10 or something like that. I'll take any suggestions any of you might have for getting more poeple to participate... OK... Here are the results. It's best viewed in a fixed-width font, like Courier New. I'm going to hold off on proclaiming what songs are the top 10 songs, just because there are so many tied for positions 8, 9, and 10... As for the top 10 albums, it's pretty clear... The #1 album is tied 6 ways though, which is actually kind of funny. :) Thanks everyone who participated! Hello! I have checked out the program I use for MP3 conversion, and I must say that it is the best I've ever tried. They use the LAME thing, and you can convert tracks that are on your computer too, not only from the CD. YOu can also change a lot of things (variable bit rate, dual channels, presets and a lot of more). And again, you can convert the songs to 320 kbps (the quality IS in fact GREATLY improved). It's one of the newest converters too I think and it's complete free and small. At least I recommend this STRONGLY Find it at www.dbpoweramp.com Chris

Hello! I realized that ofcourse I agree with Micheal that asking the Yello office would be quite silly. I'm quite shure that they would say no. About Dieter and Boris being on this list :-) I doubt it, although that would be very cool! I say as one of you did to them: KEEP UT THE GOOD WORK!! (Is there any way to check how many that is on this list and their mail adresses?) The best way is to not ask anybody about the FTP server, I think. I vote for the FTP server! I have some rare songs that it could be nice to share. About encoding, I know a program where you an encode the bitrate up to 320 kbps. Although I havn't heard a very great difference. It also converts Wav to Mp3 and Mp3 to Wav. You can find it at www.dbpoweramp.com, it's called Music Converter. Chris

Hello again (I have been sending a mail to this list everyday since I submitted, I think)! I think an FTP server is a good idea, indeed. But ofcourse it needs security and it's very important that this is for the mailinglist only (as you said)! There is many songs that are almost impossible to get in the "usual" way (Resistor Live at MayDay for example), so an FTP server would be good if we have something that we would like to share with the other members. Are you talking about only Yello stuff or other things as well? I say we should only have Yello stuff. It is also a good idea to ask Yello abou this, yes. By the way, how cool that it was another norwegian Yello fan here. I didn't imagine that! Chris

Possible FTP server for the list.

I've been kicking this idea around for quite a few years now, and I know this has been talked about several times in the past. Would any of you be interested in a FTP server just for the Yello Mailing list folks? I have a server already hosted at my workplace, so I could create a new server easily enough (I'm the Network Administrator, so it's O.K. :-) ). If so, we will need to hash some things out about it long before I even start to design it. Some things off of the top of my head to get the ball rolling (Your input is greatly encouraged :-) ) : 1. I would only allow _rare_ YELLO MP3 tracks. We need to keep supporting them, so ripping and sharing will not be tolerated with releases that are freely available in stores or on the web. Some singles may be an exception as they are really hard to get a hold of because of the limited releases. 2. NO ILLEGAL SOFTWARE (Warez), PR0N, CRACKS, ETC. WILL BE ALLOWED! PERIOD! END OF STORY! I maintain the server every day and everything is logged, so I would expect the best behavior from you all. Anything funny happens and the server is down, and most likely down for good. 3. The general username and password I assign to the list is not to be distributed or mentioned anywhere else. If it gets abused (For example, if just one person tried to upload some pr0n), the account will be deactivated immediately and everyone will have to apply for their own account. It's a pain in the arse, but if that is what needs to be done... 4. Some understanding of FTP clients on your end will help greatly. I'm a security specialist, so the standard ports are not going to be used, and you will have to use passive mode to get through the firewall and analyzed by the Intrusion Detection System. Browsers may work, but I don't recommend them as the username and password could be overseen in the address bar of the browser. SSL (encryption) may also be a requirement, but I'm still working on that part of the server. I run the other server with some of these same rules with my UT clan, and it's worked out perfectly. I like to run a tight ship, but with some open policies that I hope everyone here can respect and enjoy. The big thing I want to be sure of, though, is that it is O.K. with Boris and Dieter. I don't want the FBI knocking on my office door asking about the illegal MP3s on the server. It's fascinating to read of other Yello fans around the world. Norway, Australia, Russia, Sweden... Well I'm from Ohio. Where, you ask? Ohio. It's a little bitty place in the mid-western part of USA. There's not much support for Yello here, and most of the time when I mention that my favorite band is Yello, they always say, "Who?" Then I say, "The end credit song in Ferris Beuler." Then I get lots of "OH YEAH, that song called, OH YEAH". The last Yello album I bought in the stores here was Zebra, and everything else I have to get through the net. Anyway I'm glad to be a part of the list and I'm glad to have found Yello about ten years ago, and since then they have helped to keep me sane. Rock on Yello!
