A SLASer just emailed me and said that BIG 5 has the Barska 15x70mm binocular on-sale again, but I cannot verify this. Has anyone seen the current BIG 5 ad? Also, some months ago there was concern expressed on the list that the Barska's were not up to the quality of the Oberwerks, Galileos, Celestrons, etc. Folks, I've owned them all, and they are in fact identical. The FOV is printed right on the prism housings of all models and it is the same, among ALL these 15x70mm units. The only obvious differences are in coatings and cosmetics. Personally, I have never been able to tell the difference, visually, between a multi-coated & single-layer coated model, even side-by-side. Yes, the others sell for more, but don't be decived into thinking that price alone is a hallmark of high quality. The fact is that the Barskas are the cheapest because Barska orders more from the factory than the other brands. Quantity will always get you a discount with any manufacturer. For those who still refuse to believe, we'll set up a side-by-side comparison at a star party sometime this year so you can see for yourself. C. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Chuck I just called Big 5 in Orem. The Barskas 15X70s are on sale for the unbelievable price of $49.99. The guy in Orem has only 1 pair left. At the risk of sounding like Siegfried <g> it would be nice if someone were to buy a pair and donate them to SPOC... Patrick :-) Jim Gibson wrote:

I'm trying to get my hands on a pair of the 9 x 63 roof prisms adrvertised by Meade in the last two issues of S & T. They are listed for $100.00 which seemed like a reasonable price; that's what I think I paid for those 15 x 70 Bears from Sportsmans a year or so ago. From my experience, if the Barskas are the same as the Bears, buy them. Especially for fifty bucks. They will perform really, really well at that price! Thought I'd give the Meades a try though; size wize they fit right in betwen my 8 x 56 Orions and the Bears. I talked with Oceanside Telescope, and they said in a week or so. Must be on a slow boat from China... Joe, the Barska 9x63mm roofs are identical to the Meades except for green rubber armor. Want to borrow mine? The Pleiades were stunning in them this past winter. See the photo on my Gallery page. C. --- Joe Borgione <jborgion@yahoo.com> wrote:

Chuck et al- For some reason my original response never got posted so I'll try it again- I've done a web search for the Barska 9 x 63 and came up blank. Any suggestions? One of these nights I should hobble out your way and take you up on your offer; black versus green armor seems like a pretty insignificant difference especially if the price is right! With a comet or two on the way, I wonder if its time for another BinoPalooza. My broken leg is finally feeling somewhat normal, and I've been poking about the early morning sky with my 8 x 56 binoculars. They are the easiest thing for me to handle with one hand tied up with a crutch. Photon therapy; good for a guy's soul if not a broken leg! Thanks for the tip Chuck- Hard to tell green from black armor when its dark outside, that's for sure! One of these nights I'll hobble out your way and take you up on your offer. Does big binocular.com carry them? Any other suppliers you would suggest? Maybe it's time for another binopalooza. Now that winter has seemingly headed south, and my broken leg isn't as big a deal as earlier, I'm itching for some photons. Hauling out my scope is still a few weeks out for me (tough even on one crutch) but I've had a few good early morning sessions in the front yard with hand held binos and a chair.
