Hi all, In my poking around the web looking for binocular info, I found what may be the OEM equivalent of the 15 x 70 "Bear" binos that Chuck Hards favorably reviewed not long ago (and demo'ed at a recent SLAS meeting). While these are more expensive at $150, they are in stock and probably have some kind of limited warranty... See the attached query I sent Chuck on them. The name these are sold under is "Oberwerk". Let me know if any of you are familiar with this brand or these particular binoculars. Thanks, -Rich Note: forwarded message attached. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Music Experience http://launch.yahoo.com
Richard, I am somewhat familiar with Oberwerk. I have had the 20x80s of theirs for a few weeks now and they are quite impressive, even more so considering the price. You will find my review of them under customer comments on their web site. I have also done a side by side comparison with the 15x70 Bears and Oberwerks 15x70. The Oberwerks are easily the superior product. Much brighter and wider field of view. They seem committed to quality products and have a 30 day money back guarantee. I don't think you can go wrong. ( I have also spent some time with the 25/40x100s under dark skies, wow!) Ron Vanderhule OAS Richard Tenney wrote:

Ron, I now own both the Bears and the Oberwerks, and the fields are exactly identical...They share the exact same optical elements! See my prior post...the only substantial difference is one optical surface with a milti-coating on the Oberwerks, the front surface of the objectives. All internal element faces reflect the same blue tint as the Bears, indicating a MgF2 coating. I don't see how you could have noticed a difference in width of field, unless the Oberwerk you were comparing is a different model than mine (15x70mm). Physically impossible given that they are the same binocular. I even used different binoculars over each eye, to superimpose the fields on one another. They are identical. The better front-surface coating on the Obies can at most contribute a few percent to total throughput, and it's almost impossible for me, anyway, to notice a brightness difference that slight visually. I'm taking them under the stars tonight to see if I can notice a difference for myself. Are you really sure about your observations? Could the Bears have had dirty optics? Could someone have passed you a Fujinon in the dark, and told you it was an Oberwerk? I'll have both of these side-by-side at Binopalooza, if anyone wants to see for themselves. Chuck, I hate when this happens. I guess I will have to get the Bears I did the test with so I can redeem myself. They belong to Dave Dunn our OAS pres. I had a friend with me that night and he agreed with my assessment. The collimation was off also and that might have contributed to the overall impression. Am anxious to see what the stars have to say tonight. Ron
Ron, to check the field width, put a different bino up to each eye, and superimpose the fields. You don't even need to have them focused for this test. Can also be done in broad daylight. If one has a wider field, it will be immediately apparent. Whoever the Bears belong to should recollimate them. It's easy. Joe Borgione recollimated his, perhaps he could post his experience. Bruce Grim did also. I swear these are the same binocular with a different name painted on them! Only difference is the front coating and rubber skin details. Keen to know your retest results. Thanks! Chuck --- karen vanderhule <nitesite@lgcy.com> wrote:

Ron, as soon as I hit the send button on my last post, I re-did the field-of-view test to make sure I wasn't demented when I did it the first time. (BTW, you have to hold the binocs bottom-to-bottom to get the eyepieces close enough together to perform this test.) Then I noticed it. Printed on BOTH the Oberwerk and the Bear, on the rear of the right-side prism housing facing me, is the same inscription: 15x70 Long Eye Relief 231FT at 1000YDS 77M at 1000M I think we might have a case of the "BRAUN" effect here, my friend. I found collimating the Bear binoculars very easy; I located a website that had a description with a couple of images showing how-to. Chuck I can't find that URL, and for some reason it dosen't appear when I do a 'Google' search as it did a few weeks ago. Do you still have the web address? At any rate, all you need to do is use a small jeweler's screwdriver to peel back the rubber coating on the top of the tube above the Bear brand name on the end plate. There you will find a small, slotted screw head. It won't take much of a turn in one direction or another. I did at night in my back yard and I used a tripod mount to steady the binoculars: focus on a star or planet and make a mental note of the double vision. Turn the adjustment screw 1/4 turn in on direction, and go back to the same object and note how the view has changed. This will give you an idea as to how sensitive the screw adjustment is. Now just go back or forward in 1/8 turn increments until you get it. You can work both sides too if they are really bad. Mine collimated in about ten minutes. Joe Borgione

Yesterday (5/18) I posted this response regarding collimating Bear Binoculars; at least I thought I posted it; there's no sign of it in my inbox today (5/19). I wonder if the list-serve is experiencing a hic up or two. So, here's another try. My apologies if this turns out to be a double post. Well, thanks to Rich's surfing, Ron's endorsement (whose judgement I trust in such matters), and my impulsive bino-buying tendency, I ordered the Oberwerk 15x70mm. Look for a formal review when they arrive; of course I'll perform a side-by-side "shootout" with the Bears. Anybody else want to participate? Anybody have another brand of 15x70mm bino they want to throw into the fray? It would be very interesting to compare these models with the Fujinon. There goes my "fun money" for another two months....Damn you guys, anyway! (just kidding!) Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! It'll give me a chance to show off my paralellagram mount I built over the past couple of weeks; I was so inspired by the showing at the last SLAS meeting that I designed and built my own. This sounds like a great idea; it would be wonderful to have a few of the experts like Ron and Chuck and others on hand to take a critical look at some of the sets that show up. I would like to expand the bino resource page I started into an ongoing, online collection of bino and mount reviews that newcomers and any interested parties can read and consequently make good purchasing decisions by. Likewise I'd also like to put together a list of some success stories and step-by-step plans of some of you creative and talented craftsmen in making good parallelogram and observing chair mounts (following up Glen Warchol's inspiration with the crutch mount, etc.), replete with pictures and detailed parts lists if possible for the rest of us tool (and pocketbook)challenged, starry-eyed hopefuls. -Rich --- Chuck Hards <chuckhards@yahoo.com> wrote:

While I was building my mount, I had in the back of my mind exactly what Rich suggests. The only thing I had to go on was a site with pictures and limited text, but even that was a great help. I'd enjoy putting together a step by step guide or what I would refer to as the madness to my method; I'd need a collaborator with a digital camera though to make it really cool. Certainly worth some thought and consideration. The most exotic tool I used when building my mount was a table saw to rip a couple of boards to size; and I don't own one, I have a neighbor who does. My success is measured in part by the fact that I started with ten fingers and I still have them all! I have to think that most of us out there without the big tools have a friend or two that do. Let's keep this discussion open and when Chuck's Oberworks show up, a bino-party seems like the ticket. I'd like to put a dent in that list of binocular objects... Joe Borgione -------------------

Plus or minus up to four days would probably be OK, especially this time of year when it doesn't get truly dark until well after ten. I was impressed with Lakeside also. It's reasonably close to the Wasatch front, and the sky was pretty darn dark for being only an hour from Salt Lake. AYE- I'm always green to go on a Friday or Saturday night; Since I don't work on Fridays, Thursday night works good too. IT would be GREAT to put up on the Bino webpage, photos of various types of bino holders like we saw at last meeting - distant pic and perhaps a close up shot or two - could help select and guide building our own. Giving credit to the roiginal builder. I think all the members would like to see photos. Can add on additional pics as other creative ones show up, or if someone starts breeding them. Hi Rich: Sorry, I didn't save it. I may have a printed copy; I'll look for it this weekend. If all else fails, we can see if Cynthia has it archived when she gets back. Can you access the archives, as acting list owner? I could always write it again; I still like the Bears very much. Maybe a good idea before the Oberwerks arrive... Chuck,
Looks like I'm too good with the housekeeping -- going way back in my email archive, I thought that I had saved your original Bear Brand 15x70 review, but alas, no longer there. Any chance you still have that review handy in your saved folder perhaps? Or anyone else on this list still have it?

Jim, I own a decent digital camera, and would be happy to oblige. I just wish I had thought of it at the last SLAS meeting. If any of those who brought homemade mounts don't have a decent camera (I also own a good scanner if you have prints) wouldn't mind too much bringing them back to the next SLAS meeting I can bring my camera along. -Rich --- Jim Stitley <sitf2000@yahoo.com> wrote:
IT would be GREAT to put up on the Bino webpage, photos of various types of bino holders like we saw at last meeting - distant pic and perhaps a close up shot or two - could help select and guide building our own. Giving credit to the roiginal builder. I think all the members would like to see photos. Can add on additional pics as other creative ones show up, or if someone starts breeding them. Jim

Not a problem, really, I'm just going to skip my medication for a couple months! :>O

Prints could also be scanned. Someone at the SLAS meeting had a camera, there was a photo in the latest NOVA from that meeting. Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? LAUNCH - Your Yahoo! Music Experience http://launch.yahoo.com
Hi, I'm pretty sure the guy with the camera was Nova editor Tom Sevcik. I don't know if he is subscribed here but his email is sfv1ts@hotmail.com. Patrick Chuck Hards wrote:

Well, you know the 'ol hind sight thing. It is obvious now, but wasn't last meeting. I was very impressed with the assortment and wish I had taken a camera too. Even the pivoting chair would like to see again. Maybe can arrange a time & place to re-do and add others - I think all the mebers would like ato see a photo page for these wonderful, creative contributions. This is more of a suggestion for a SLAS officer than this forum, but maybe they could use a club historian, or at least some kind of secretary who takes archival images of general meetings along with notes. Rich, Glen and I (also the other SLAS members themselves who generously brought their own rigs) seem to have struck a chord with that meeting's topic-not being able to attend frequently, I'm not in a position to comment as to the "interest factor" of the average meeting, but I'm sure that most are worthy of being recorded in some form. I do feel that the more everyone gets to participate, the more inclusive, the more fun and memorable ANY activity is. The sheer variety definitely added to the experience. I have a feeling that when we do the "Binotopia" outing, most if not all of those who attended the SLAS meeting will be there, so we should have a second chance to gather this material for Rich's Bino-resource page. I'm having a similar problem with getting pictures for the new "SPOC the Early Years" page ( http://planet.state.ut.us/SLAS/SPOC/SPOCEARLY.HTML ). If the lack of response is to be believed, I seem to be the only one who has any SLAS related images from more than a couple of years ago. Patrick
Chuck; All the reviews I have read where the Fujinons were compared with the Oberwerks the Obies fared quite well. One reviewer called them "Fuji Lite". Todd Gross rated them an exceptional value. Sorry my endorsement caught you at a weak moment. It happens to me all to often also. Ron Chuck Hards wrote:
Well, thanks to Rich's surfing, Ron's endorsement (whose judgement I trust in such matters), and my impulsive bino-buying tendency, I ordered the Oberwerk 15x70mm.
Look for a formal review when they arrive; of course I'll perform a side-by-side "shootout" with the Bears. Anybody else want to participate? Anybody have another brand of 15x70mm bino they want to throw into the fray? It would be very interesting to compare these models with the Fujinon.
There goes my "fun money" for another two months....Damn you guys, anyway! (just kidding!)
Chuck
