It's not so much the answer to the question (profound either way), but how humanity will react. Carl Sagan's "Contact " was made into a movie. Humanity, in general, is not prepared for the answer . Then again, if it is sentient, it m ight not be friendly at all and our existence will hang in the balance . IMHO. in our life times, we will find "life" (bacteria and such) somewhere closer to home - in our solar system. If memory serves, one of the Apollo missions traveled to the Surveyor landing site and found earth based bacteria clinging to existance on the craft.

NOAA: Earth Smashed A Record For Heat In May 2014, Effects To Worsen Driven by exceptionally warm ocean waters, Earth smashed a record for heat in May and is likely to keep on breaking high temperature marks, experts say. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Monday said May's average temperature on Earth of 15.54 C beat the old record set four years ago. In April, the globe tied the 2010 record for that month. Records go back to 1880. Experts say there's a good chance global heat records will keep falling, especially next year because an El Nino weather event is brewing on top of man-made global warming. Spectacular ISS pass this morning

Close to 5:00 AM, I watched what had to be the ISS (haven't looked it up) pass nearly overhead. It was one of the brightest sightings I've ever seen, easily mag. -4. Just as it was passing the Pleiades, a bright meteor streaked by just under Perseus, headed north. The train was easily 20 degrees long. Beautiful morning sights!

It's worse than sad. It's a giant betrayal of all the brave people who worked so hard, and those who died, to achieve the landings. Apollo 11 Heritage key to our future

For the 45th anniversary of the first walk of humankind onto the surface of another celestial body, the Utah Space Association is having Space Exploration Day activities at Trolley Square in the ballroom area on the south side, entered from 600 South (Martin Luther Kind Blvd). This is between 600 East and 700 East. This will be on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Retired Senator/Astronaut Jake Garn will speak at 9:00 AM. There will be exhibits up from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. In the same area on Sunday, July 20, 2014, there will be a First Step Event from 8:30 PM to 9:30 PM. The Apollo 11 Moonwalk will be shown. At 8:56 PM, it will be the exact 45th anniversary of Neil Armstrong taking his first step onto the surface of the Moon. At this time a large screen TV will show Neil Armstrong taking his first step. With our future in space, the private sector space industry is stepping up to return astronauts to the Moon, to set up mining operations. Helium 3 and a few other rare elements can be profitably mined on the Moon with current space transportation costs. With a future of vastly reduced space transportation costs, much more mining will be possible at a profit. I hope space explorers will be able to ride piggy back on these efforts. J.
