My friend went to Great Basin this past weekend, and reports it was a total washout. Clouds and rain the entire weekend, much like here.

Two pictographs of a three-tailed comet from Dead Horse Point area

Hey, speaking of comets, take a look at these photos I took a few years back when I was wandering around the Dead Horse Point area. The first set is from 7-Mile Wash, the second from Hell Roaring Canyon. Something different, but astronomy-related. I propose it’s two different depictions of the same shaman and the same comet, but from two different artists, either from the same group or two different groups. Also, notice the solitary big-horn-sheep pictograph from the Hell Roaring Canyon set appears to be pregnant. Was this the artist’s way of saying this was a spring-time comet? Great Basin

Well, if your local to Salt Lake you do have one more opportunity to get out. It isn't a outreach event, it is 3 days of just observing out near Vernon for October 3rd, 4th and 5th unless we are clouded or rained out. Come out for all 3 if you want, come out for one if you want or don't come out if that is what you want. I will have an Orion XT10 set up for newer people to use and will train them how to use it (takes an hour or two to do this). I think Mat may bring his own ATM 8 inch scope that he has (it's up for sale also) for others to use. If the weather is good, and October usually is, its a great time to say good-bye to the summer objects and hello to the fall objects, and if you stay up late enough, to the winter constellations. SQM-L ranges in the high 21.69 to 21.75 range in the summer, with my best readings there being 21.88 and 21.85, so it is a dark site with some impact from the SLC light dome to the NE. Anyway, I know a few of us are going and are going to have a great time as long as the weather cooperates. No registration if you don't want, its laid back but bring your own services and water (Forest Service Toilets at the Vernon Reservoir a couple of miles to the east with camp grounds there. You can rough camp where we observe also). Oh, dress warm, it will get cold at night at that time of the year.

There seems to be some misunderstanding here. Actually, Thursday night at Great Basin was spectacular. One of a few times that I was able to spot M33 with the naked eye so easily. Also pointed out the North American Nebula to a few fellow telescope operators from Nevada who had never been able to distinguish it from the rest of neighboring star clouds. Had a good size crowd that night. True, we were clouded out Friday night and rained out Saturday night. Many thanks to Steve Fisher and Ivo Stutznegger whose names come off the top of my head for coming down.Keynote speaker Wally Pacholka had some amazing large gallery wrapped astro photos for sale. Next year's astronomy festival will be September 19th to the 21st. Tom Sevcik

I was at Great Basin for the Astronomy Festival. Thursday night was great. Crystal clear skies, very dark. There was a very good crowd. I broke down the equipment and headed back to the ranch about 00:30 Friday morning. However, Friday and Saturday evenings were both washed out. It was still fun. The wife and I had never been to Lehman Cave. Interesting. Dave

I know, off topic, but I thought you guys would appreciate this. I went to the Salt Lake Comic Con this weekend and got my geekness on. I was able to get William Shatner to sign my Star Trek DVD. AND I was able to get Adam West and Burt Ward to sign my Batman the Movie DVD! My geek cup floweth over! Hahahaa!
