This is the best I can show. It is SR 35 that leads up there. This is the point as you just start making the climb. I would wait until July new moon before going up but that's me. I'm planning an August trip to Elizabeth Ridge this year. Here is the image link (there is a semi truck coming down from Hanna so the Pass is open. I cannot speak to whether the snow is still up there. Northern Lights?

Conditions are prime for aurora tonight - no moon, relatively clear skies, and the solar storms are raging. The OVATION forecast currently shows visibility well South of the Canada border - http://helios.swpc.noaa.gov/ovation/ I'm setting an alarm - I missed the show last week. And I just noticed a nice ISS pass to the North just before 2am. I'm sensing a sweet photo op. Jared

Joe, Nothing changes in terms of the Forest Land or my land as you would take SR 36 from Tooele. For Five Mile Pass you could simply come down SR 36 to where it intersects SR 73 and take that down to Five Mile Pass. For you in Salt Lake City it might be easier to go south on I-15 and then take SR 73 in Lehi out to Five Mile Pass. Jay

Observing Saturday and Faust/Pony Express Road Closing

I am sitting waiting for a final interview instead of doing outreach and observing with Mat and Jeff. Arghhh. ... However, tomorrow is Saturday, school is out except for my own course work and I need time relaxing, chasing down faint objects, sketching them and just enjoying the faint sky. So on Saturday I am heading to either Five Mile Pass or most likely, Pit n Pole with temps at night in the lower 50's in the forecast. If anyone would like to meet up, zip me an email at JayLEads at gmail dot com (put it together). For those unaware, this is the last time you can use the Pit n Pole location until late July or early August. Tooele Co. is tearing up the asphalt and laying gravel down for the 11.3 mile stretch of the Faust/Pony Express Road. Cost savings is the reason why. It will mean as I go out to the Forest Land south of Vernon I'll drive up 73 over to where it connects with 36 and back down.

Hi Richard, Actually no, it is not at Morton Salt, that is exit 84 - too bad Google doesn't show the exit numbers. The next one west is 77 for SR 196 headed south, and the next is Delle (little more than a gas station) at exit 70, and finally ... Exit 62 is where I-80 is going northwest and then makes a nearly 90 degree turn to going southwest. Zoom in until you can clearly see the I-80 emblem on the exit 62 bridge over the freeway. Follow the line of the bridge to the northwest about 2.5 times the width of the interchange to a pair of Panaramio photo markers just beyond a dirt road running SW to NE. If you see only one, zoom in a bit more. The photo at the left marker is looking east and the photo at the right is looking west. Note the unobstructed horizon in that photo. All that remains of the beacon is the concrete slab with an arrow point on each end pointing out the air route between San Francisco and Salt Lake City. That slab of concrete is barely discernible right beside the north side of the kink in the dirt road SSW of the right hand Panaramio marker. Another good spot is on the south side of the freeway at the same exit. In a zoomed in image, follow these directions to drive to the telephone relay tower: Cross the bridge to the south side and go just past the off- and on-ramps then turn sharply right. Follow the gravel road down to the old highway 40. Turn left on old 40, go under the railroad, follow the long gentle curve to the left and just after old 40 becomes straight again, turn right on the main gravel road headed south. Follow this well-traveled gravel road, bearing left at the only branch, up to the relay tower. This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but if you still have questions, just ask.
