Those who have been on this list a very long time might remember that back in 2007 I spotted a little dot on one of my images that moved from picture to picture that turned out to be an unknown minor planet. I gave it the temporary name UOFU08 (for Univ. of Utah find #8). The Minor Planet Center checked and when they decided it was in fact a new find they called it K07V08N / 2007 VN8. Going through my correspondence from back then I saw I'd posted to this list that it would probably be a couple of years before I'd be able to name it. Turned out to be longer than that. However, a couple of hours ago I received my second cosmological birthday present (the first being the GRB) in the form of an email from MPC giving my little rock a number: 361690 So, what am I bid for naming rights? :) Just kidding as the rights were gone long ago. Some here might also remember that following my (with wife Holly) first find back on 03 November 1999 and my solo find a couple of weeks later I was thinking this was going to be easy. So easy that I gave naming rights to my next find to KCPW to auction off during one of their telethons. And from what I remember, they got a handsome sum. Little did the winner (or I) know that next find would be 8 years later. And that the ability to name it would come 6 years after that. So I just sent the winning bidder an email to the address I had for him in 2007. So far it has not bounced. I'm really interested to see how he'll respond. Clear skies, patrick

YMCA star party in soapstone basin.

Gang, I've been asked to put on a star party for the YMCA Camp Roger. Kinda short notice, but if anyone's available for Monday night (the 1st), I'd appreciate it. This is the one that was rained out last week. They have a large open field that we can setup in. They will allow us to drive onto the field to setup as well. I'm not sure about power, don't count on it. There will be about 30-40 kids at the camp that night, they will provide enough counselors to keep the kids coming in waves. I think if we could have somewhere around 3-4 scopes that'd be plenty. It'll be quite dark, there's really nothing around, although they have a restricted view until about 20-30 degrees up in most directions. Plan on starting around 9:30, I'll be getting there somewhere around 8-8:30 so I can setup while it's still light. Plan on about an hour from entering Parley's canyon. Dear Friends, the latest issue of TIME Magazine, dated July 8 and already delivered on the East Coast, has an article about my books on Revolutionary War veterans, with photos. The article is a short one on p. 2. The magazine has three photos and a reference to their Light Box feature, which will carry more details on-line as of July 4. You don't need a subscription to access the Light Box. That on-line site will have many more photos and descriptions, and I think links to my e-books, which can be purchased from Kindle and Nook. Anyone able to offer help w/ some issues w/ Ritchey-Chretien mirror set and tube?

Hi Folks, I've had a nice 10" RC-style Cass mirror set that has been, in fits and starts, making its way to becoming a telescope. After a long fit, I'm back into the start mode. I've run into some issues that I find I really need help with. If there's someone who'd be willing to spend some time coaching me, I'd be most grateful. If someone has, or knows of a place to do some testing of Cassegrain mirrors that would be extra helpful. One of the main issues I'm struggling with is trying to determine the correct separation of the mirrors. I know that can be determined quite well with a Ronchi test, but I've been unsuccessful in achieving a test setup that even allows me to see the lines. (Part of the difficulty is that the scope is not really fully put together and I'd appreciate some advice on how to proceed from where I am.) At any rate, if anyone has some time or knows of some sources to check into, I'd sure like to hear from you. (I'm located in Orem, and if more convenient, would happily come to you.) John

I once took my scope on an overnight camping expedition when I was looking for trilobites in the western desert. By nightfall I was too tired to do anything with the telescope. I'm back

I'm back on the list, sorry I had to take about a month off. I still am not in a position to reply quickly but can at least read emails more regularly. Hope you've all had a great time under the stars so-far this summer, lots of warm weather and dark nights ahead!
