6-inch refractor (Was: Re: Journey to the 1.8 meter)

I agree, Mat. Erik settled on a good all-around configuration. I have a few 6" refractor builds in the line-up as time and budget allow. My CGEM tripod may not extend high enough so I'll probably be making a new mount and tall wooden tripod, or seeing what the used market holds, when the time comes. Too, the CGEM might be able to handle the f/10, but isn't adequate for the f/15 Jaegers project. I may build a pillow-block mount for that one, using some of the old components Siegfried gave me (thanks again Ziggy!), if I don't go with a Gerrish permanently attached to the house, or a camera-obscura/Coude' setup going through the no-longer-used swamp cooler ducting up to the roof. Of course, most or all of this may have to wait until retirement, a few more years away. I heard through the grapevine that Steve Fisher sold his 8" D&G but kept his 6" (where are you, Steve, we miss you!). With refractors, seems that going from a 6" to an 8" is physically a much larger step than the same aperture increase with Newtonians. Journey to the 1.8 meter

No, not for storing it at SPOC, the LP is too much and SPOC isn't a true dark site. Good to have there for a few star parties but this thing needs to be at dark sites to really show its stuff off in the best possible dark. It needs a sign that says "Warning: Aperture Fever for Amateurs" and another that says "Welcome to the Dark Side." . Having Mike take it to the major star parties like Bryce, Texas, Nebraska, Oregon, Golden State in California, the Grand Canyon Star Party, Great Basin, now that is where this scope needs to be shown to the public, both the general public and the body of public amateur astronomers IMHO. If you really wanted to show the public, have it set up out over in Arches or Canyonlands for a week. Now that gives me goose bumps just thinking of the views of M13, M17, M16, M22 from some of these sites. The Lagoon and Trifed not to mention The Borg Cube or M11. M57 would certainly show the central star at those sites with ease. YMMV and IMHO this leviathan was made for Mike's use and to show off to the public at very dark sites. Jay

Next Liver & Onions Subcommittee Meeting

The next meeting of the Liver & Onions Subcommittee will be held Saturday, November 9th, at the Left Fork Grill, beginning at noon. Left Fork Grill 68 West 3900 South, SLC Tons of on-site free parking, and only a hundred yards from a TRAX station. Please join El Presidente Chuck, Sub-Director Bau, Generalisimo Secretario Larry, and our cadre of regular co-conspirators for good food, good friends, and lively discussion of astronomy and all things under the sun. Bring something for show-and-tell if desired. All are welcome, and you need not order the liver if your palatte or physiology is compromised by some heart-breaking disease or condition that precludes you from partaking in one of God's greatest gifts to humanity. The only rule is that you may not vocalize negative comments concerning those who do order the liver. In fact both Joe and myself may have to take a pass on the delectable organ meat this time around, but you never know, we may opt to endure the suffering of a less-than-optimal physical state in order to enjoy the wonderful, spiritual goodness of liver and onions, the gift that keeps on giving for hours after you eat it. A head count ahead of time will be helpful when I call to reserve our table early Saturday morning, so RSVP if at all possible. Spouses and friends are always welcome. Children (such as myself and Siegfried) should be well-behaved. Our autumn meetings are typically the best attended since the warm observing weather is over up north, and ski season hasn't kicked-in yet. There is a rumor that one of our good astro-list friends from down south, Dave Gary, might be attending, as well as Mike Clements (2-Meter Mike, Mr. 70, etc.) if his work schedule allows, and I believe Bruno is coming down from Idaho, as well. Hope to see you all there!

Here's the National Weather Report for Herriman tonight: "Mostly cloudy, with a low around 48. South southeast wind 13 to 18 mph." The Clear Sky Chart for Salt Lake City doesn't raise my hopes, either.
