They finally reluctantly left us and gave their phone number for us to call to let them know we were came up there again so they wouldn't have to investigate us again. Sometime after 1::0,, Steve called to all of us to look to the north where two dim tall pillars of grayish light sort of quivered for a bit, faded and then came back briefly. He guessed it was the northern lights, and Lowell concurred. I always thought they were glorious colors, so I would not have known what were may have seen. Looking at the sun report on spaceweather.com, though it says June 6--7 northern lights were as far south and included Utah and a picture someone took in Tremonton. I have to agree with Mark. The astronomy festival was a huge success due to the three nights of astonishing clear star-filled skies! Thanks to all from SLAS who came. Over the course of the three nights, we handed out 150, "Deep Space Observer" certificates. One lady, perhaps in her upper 70's commented that she hasn't had so much fun in years! This year we had live-feed video in H-alpha as well as white light viewing. The kids especially loved the programs, "Fun with Optics!" and "Comet Motion Flip Book!" that I conducted in the afternoons. I was able to contract the showing of the big hit "The City Dark" for the rangers to add to their Saturday night program. We had 126 attendees, not counting rangers, for that presentation. I heard we had some 20 telescopes on a couple of nights. The North American Nebula, M13, the Lagoon and Trifid nebulas were easy naked-eye objects to point out to the many newbies present from all over the U.S. Hats off to Ranger Kelly Carroll and his rangers for a well organized festival. Please consider in joining us for next year's 4th annual Great Basin Astronomy Festival which will be held July 11 - 13. Tom Sevcik

Great Basin N.P. Astro festival

A great time was had at Great Basin National Park this past weekend. This marked the park's third annual Astronomy Festival. Attendance (public and telescope drivers) was up from last year, and the weather cooperated nicely! I was there for all three nights of the festival and was pleasantly surprised by the number of visitors who were there for the public viewing. It was great fun to share the wonders of the universe with the people who came out for the star party. Even though the seeing and transparency wasn't perfect all three nights, all in all the weather was great. In fact on Saturday night as I was busy sharing the view of M51 through my 16" my scope, I paused to view it for a moment and it was one of the best if not the best view I have had of that galaxy with that telescope. After I almost fell off the ladder with surprise at just how good the view was, I told the party goers that they were in for a treat since this was a view that doesn't always come along. There were lots of oohs and aahs that night as well as the other nights as I shared M51, M57, Saturn, M13, the Leo trio, and others. As usual, Kelly Carroll and the rest of the Great Basin Dark Rangers did an outstanding job and I applaud their efforts! The park is very accommodating and I would encourage all to enjoy it during the astro festival and at other times during the year. Primary Childrens Hospital fund raiser star party

The Smith's star party that was cancelled due to weather has been rescheduled for Thursday, June 28th. This is the fund-raiser star party for Primary Childrens Hospital. I scheduled it to start at 7:00 pm with solar observations. We can then transition into night sky with the Moon and later Saturn and other objects. We will have a 9 day old Moon which is just about perfect for a public star party. I would appreciate your help with this. Please let me know if you are able to help.
