Chuck continues his cantankerous attitude on several threads. Back to sunspots for the rest of us. An afterthought is NASA posted that picture as an example, not as an actual image, for all who will be looking looking at the sun on June 5th in hopes of sighting first contact. The SOHO image of today is much more representative of what viewers will see and based on the NASA website you can take a good guess where first contact will occur in relation to the sunpots visible. Knowing that it is Dave's deepest, darkest and most feverent desire to join the flat earth society, I thought he might be viewing the sun from a very different perspective (it was meant as a joke).

Joan, I think you’re correct. The site I was referring to assumes that AR 1476 would be around by 5 June 2012. I don’t think this is the case. Thanks for the link to the SOHO site. Dave

It was a link not an attachment. Apparently NASA is assuming that sunspot group 1476 will have survived, as last seen, a full rotation of the sun and be visible on transit day. It might have been better if they posted a more current picture (from SOHO) so all those who will actually be looking at the sun on June 5th would have a better frame of reference to look for first contact.

Dave, this link http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/sunspots/ is the SOHO website picture for today and identities by number all the sunpot groups. There doesn't seem to be a 1479 group listed. Are you looking at the same sun as the rest of us?

intervalometer

Hi all. I use a Nikon D70 and have decided to add an intervalometer to my arsenal for shooting astrophotos and for other projects. Problem is I can't find one for the D70, only for the D70s, which has a port for a cable that my D70 does not have. Does anyone know of a compatible intervalometer for the D70? Thanks, Kim

U of U hosting 2 events for the Transit of Venus

From a U of U news release issued today: Venus will pass directly between the Earth and the sun on Tuesday, June 5, and the planet’s rare transit across the face of the sun will present a once-in-a-lifetime viewing opportunity for people in northwestern North America, Hawaii, the western Pacific and northern Asia. The last transit of Venus was in 2004, but the next won’t happen until 2117. The University of Utah’s Natural History Museum of Utah – in partnership with the Salt Lake Astronomical Society and the university’s Department of Physics and Astronomy – will host public viewing opportunities and hands-on activities and lectures on June 4 and June 5. Just a reminder that as with most listserves attachments to posts are not allowed on Utah-Astronomy. This is due in part to some people still being on dialup and multimeg sized files don't work well for them. But the main reason is attachments can be used to spread viruses.
