Astronomy Investigations of the Venus Transit

All, I was wondering if anyone has heard of any university or observatory that have research planned around the transit of Venus. It seems to me that it would be a great time for a comparative study of the change in light curve of the Sun at the Venus transit and compare this with Earth-like exo-planet transits. Also, I think it would be a good time to do spectroscopic studies of Venus' atmosphere with the sun behind it with today's technology. Has anyone heard of this being done? Thanks Rodger Fry

Windows question

Most here may know I'm primarily a Mac person. But I do need to use an old Windows machine to run my camera and mount until Software Bisque finishes converting their software to OSX. Under Windows I occasionally (like right now) have a problem in that this message pops up: +++++ Automatic Updates Updating your computer is almost complete. Your computer needs to be restarted for the updates to take effect. Windows will restart your computer automatically in 15:00 minutes. Do you want to restart your computer now? +++++ Is there some way to keep that message from appearing? As it is, once the massage comes up I don't dare leave the computer unattended for more than a few minutes lest it restart itself causing the camera and mount control software to shut down in the middle of a run. Ideas? patrick

I don't know which older version of Windows you're using, so I can't give a specific answer to your question, but somewhere, in Control Panel I think, there should be some option with the word "Update" or some such in the label. You should be able to enter that particular option and within it there ought to be a dialog box that allow you to select whether to automatically do updates or to merely be notified when updates are available or even to ignore all update messages. I think you should be able to set it to ignore the update messages. I know that's the case with later versions of XP and newer. How critical is this? Do you need an answer b-4 tomorrow's transit? Else I can probably help out. Another couple of avenues of approach, which are illegal for nerds, geeks, and dweebs, are to search the Windows Help Support Sites and to search Google. -- Thanx, *Ray *

This will give us another thing to look for during the transit tomorrow. The Mysterious Arc of Venus http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2012/04jun_arcofvenus/ Happily the weather forecast for SLC continues to improve. Even the projected winds have come down a bit. Regarding the wind, once 1st and 2nd contacts are behind us I'm going to try moving inside and viewing through those huge picture windows they have at the museum. Yeah, looking through windows is usually a bad idea (double entendres aside) but for the Sun and a spot the size of Venus maybe it'll work. patrick
