It seems the experimenters didn't understand the implications of relativity well enough to account for them in their calculations. Sadly the media will not scream this from the mountain tops like they did the original report. Many people will miss the backtracking and be left with the wrong impression. Like I said before this incident is just another in the long 100 year history of relativity. When the Nazis came to power the fired anyone who believed in this "jewish physics" as they called it. That was until they figured out that the thing "might" be used to make a weapon. Then they started their own version of the Manhattan Project in an attempt to catch up with the rest of the world. The baby boomer generation was raised on the promise of space travel. We would vacation in Alpha Centauri and the trip to Pluto would be no more trouble than a ride down to Saint George. It didn't happen and Einstein took the blame. They now jump at any hint that it's "just a theory" and that it's about to be overturned by "new physics". All I can say is "I told you so". DT

I have three applications of note for the IPAD. They are Distant Suns, Redshift, and pUniverse. There is a lot you can do with the software, For example you can find the azimuth and altitude of planets and constellations that are visible. What to watch out for near St. George

Hi All, I'm still planning an astronomy outing on my next trip to St George and am favoring Debbie's suggested Kolob site about 40 miles to the north. Is there anything I should know about the site before heading out, such as fees, overnight parking/camping, pests (both human and non-human)? Thanks for your help! Craig

Well, he's currently the brightest object for me, anyway. Dylan Holmes was born at 2:55 am 10-12-11, after a difficult pregnancy. He was 7 weeks early, so he's going to be in the NICU for a bit. He is doing well though, he's on a feeding tube, but he doesn't need supplemental oxygen. I'm already saving up for his first dob. ATM session reminder

Just a quick reminder for the October ATM session at the Hutchings' optical shop (my garage...). It will be this Saturday, 10/15/12, starting at 9:00 and continuing at least to noon and longer is no problem. Comet Elenin flyby FAQ by NASA

Kicking and screaming

My boss finally told me "You WILL carry a company phone" and dammit, it's a smart phone. I've been reading Utah-astro posts on it today. As soon as I figure out how to use the darn thing, I may actually post from it, lol. So, Chuck has entered the broader world of tech, against his will, but at least at no cost to him. And WTH is "Angry Birds", anyway? I don't have a good feeling about this. It runs contrary to my goal of being off-line completely after retirement but well before death. And the fact that I got the thing on the day of Steve Job's death seems like a harbinger of doom. How can a proper curmudgeon carry a smart phone and still have any self-respect? I'm an analog man living in a digital world. Harrumph, harrumph I say. ;-)
