NGC7217 (finally)

Mat at his Dobsonian

Here's a pic I took the other day of Mat Hutchings at his 16-inch Dob (he made all of this impressive instrument himself, including grinding the mirror). The fuzzy orbs aren't UFOs, they are because of dust in the air or on the lens; the dark figure behind Mat isn't a ghost, but where Mat stood back a bit from the scope after the flash went off, and blocked some of the starlight. Clear, Partly Cloudy and Cloudy Nights

This link: http://www.cloudynights.com/ubbthreads/attachments/4837784-Clouds_1.jpg shows a bunch of western cities and the amount of clear days vs partly cloudy and cloudy. Salt Lake is listed as the 45th city with only 34.2% of the total days clear. The break out is 125 clear days, 101 partly cloudy days and a 139 days cloudy. How does that measure with what others may have gathered in terms of data? -- Jay Eads

Looking for Observing sites

I am off track (not working for 3 weeks) and I am doing to take one day each week before the 20th to check out the areas southwest and west of Pit n Pole and west of the traditional Lakeside site for more observing sites. Its looking like Tuesday for this week and the following week I'll decide. If someone wants to share the ride, let me know, I can meet you and pick you up if you want to share a morning and early afternoon looking for some a couple more observing sites. I'll be stopping to get some rock samples since I need samples sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous (though I won't find all of them, it will add some fun and kill two birds with one stone so to speak). Finally, a reasonable refutation of superluminal neutrinos

Joe, Take a look at this article. http://arxiv.org/pdf/1109.6562v1 Basically, superluminal neutrinos radiating via the same mechanism as Cerenkov radiation. These authors calculate that neutrinos reaching the detector would have an energy of ~12.5 GeV. The OPERA scientists report an average energy at the detector of 28.1 GeV. For now, I’m going with Sheldon’s calculation because it requires no change in my thinking. I hate change. Dave
