Today's (10-3-2007) EPOD is kind of interesting. http://epod.usra.edu/ - A rainbow imaged in infrared. Pleaides M45 - Ally's Braid asterism

At a star party a couple of weeks ago, the question arose of whether there was an asterism name for the trail of seven stars that lead south off Alycone from the Pleaides. Alycone is a tragic female Greek mythology character. "The Radio Antennae" was suggested as a possible asterim name. The only reference I have run across is "Ally's Braid" [the braided hair of Alycone] contained in the SAC v2.5 Asterism database without attribution to source: "Ally's Braid . . . CalSky is showing the main Moon crossing track running northwest to southeast (at 3:51am) with a 4.75km wide visibility path going across Herriman and running parallel to I-15 at Lehi. Club members in Riverton, Bluffdale, Herriman, Lehi and Saratoga Springs might also be able to image this lunar crossing of the ISS. Calsky link to the ground track is appended. Don't know if it will work. Just to be clear, the ISS overflight is not visible. The station will not be reflecting enough light. The outline of the ISS against the disk of the Moon will be visible. The actual transit of the Moon may not be acquirable visually. The duration of the event is 0.6 seconds. In The Shadow of the Moon Movie

Today I saw an excellent movie about the Apollo Moon Program, at the Salt Lake City Broadway Theater, called, "In The Shadow of the Moon". One thing that I have noticed from astronaut space pictures; they never show any stars in the sky. I assume that camera contrast resolution might have something to this. The astronauts claim that they could see stars in the sky. Any comments on this problem? Even when the astronauts were going into the Moon's shadow, I didn't see any stars. Although, that could be because the camera was aimed directly at the lunar landscape. Sincerely, J. David Baxter

Actually Patrick SPOC is a very good site to view DSO's. Those people out on the lawn aren't all there for the Irridium Flares. You need to stay up late enough for it to get dark though. The official part of SPOC parties tend to adjorn before astonomical twilight ends though. That's when it starts to get really good and the public is still wandering in at that time. And the public loves it. Kurt could give you a list of bright DSO's that are visable from SPOC and Dave Bernsen would be happy to find them for you with your telescope if you need help. Observing report with the F/40 singlet configuration: Lunar craters along the terminator clearly discerned as such. Any detail on the face of the moon, however, was too awash with color to clearly see. Jupiter was a colored disk, tint depending on just where the eyepeice was racked in relation to the part of the spectrum in focus at that particular point. No Jovian moons seen in a bright dusky sky. I may try later if I don't fall asleep first. Right now I feel very grateful for modern optics, and a renewed appreciation for astonomical pioneers who made some incredible discoveries with stinko telescopes.
