Mark your calendar for early evening May 7. Their will be a close encounter between the Ring nebula and periodic comet 73P. The comet will be close to earth so its exact position in the sky will depend stongly on your location on the globe. Go to spaceweather.com and use the link at the bottom of the page for "Observable Comets". 73p is in the list and includes orbital elements and a link for daily ephemerides. OT: Sports cars

Just wondering if any other astro list members share my interest in sports cars and roadsters. I'm not talking about "point and shoot" horsepower muscle cars, but cars that go fast yet were designed for curves. Cars that were meant to be driven on the open road and enjoyed for the driving experience. Some examples would include the MG midget, the Triumph Spitfire, TR6 or TR7, Toyota 2000 GT, Jaguar XK-E series, Datsun 1600, 2000, or 240Z, Mazda RX-7, Miata, RX-8. Anybody?

Baader solar filter for finder projects - construction pics

I threw together a Baader solar filter for a 50mm finder this weekend. It uses a rifle lens cap for a "cleaner" look. Howard, Amazing that you can get anything directly with an ordinary digital camera on zoom. Saturday morning's graze

For those interested in Saturday morning's (about 5:00 am MDT) Regulus graze, here's a map with info for the area around Snowville, Utah: http://users.wirelessbeehive.com/~paw/temp/SNOW03.JPG I hope to set up where the grey line crosses Locomotive Road. If we want to turn this into a "real" expedition the idea would be to have observers with recording equipment set up at various sites north and south of that location. My plan is to arrive about an hour before the event and then head home after. Please let me know if you have questions. Comet 17P - Ob report 10/31 am

This morning at 1:30am and again at 5:30am, I took a quick look at Comet 17P between cloud banks and high cirrus layer clouds. Between urban light pollution, cloud extinction and a third quarter moon, no detail could be seen. However, 17P's size and brillance were unmistakable under these poor observing conditions. The diffuse coma was slightly smaller than the radius of the Moon (15 arcmins) but larger than the Great Orion nebula (M42) as seen in light polluted skies (10'). My best guess is a dia. of 13 arcmins.
