Patrick, The mistake was mine. I had opened the file with a viewer that stretched it automatically. Dang, I hate it when that happens! I'm sending you a version of the image that I just tweaked a little in Photoshop. As I suspected, there was detail in the core. It is actually a very nice image. Beautiful, in fact! I'm pretty sure seeing the nebulosity is normal in a raw image provided enough photos have been collected. Note that with the same set up (C-14 @ f/5.2 and ST-10 binned to 3x3) I can plainly see M-57 in a 1/4 second exposure. > Tell me again please... what software you are using? I can't be sure, but I doubt that you are really saturating the > core area in your exposure. Well, getting back to M-57, it burns out in less than a second. I'm just collecting a bunch of photos. For good measure I just fired up the Windoze machine and zipped one of the 20 30 second exposures that eventually made up the final product with the same 30 second shot with the master dark subtracted (but with no flat having been applied). Hopefully the zip file is in your in box now. Another new image added - The Flaming Star

Hello again. I just added another image to my gallery. It is IC 405, the Flaming Star. This is the second image from the weekend of clear skies. This one is over 6 hours of data, and I am very pleased with the outcome. I hope others enjoy it as well. I am always interested in hearing what other think about the images.. positive and negative! I must respectfully disagree with Joe. Adler has two large star theaters (one has a full-dome computer graphics system similar to what we have here at the Clark and one uses an "old fashion" optical-mechanical projection system with a superb starfield) and I've enjoyed the programs I've seen in either theater. The Adler also has several large exhibit areas, including a new 5,000 square-foot exhibit on Jim Lovell's (Gemini 7 & 12 and Apollo 8 & 13) career as an astronaut and his actual Gemini 12 spacecraft. They also have a 20" telescope that they make available to the public most Friday nights. The facility itself is impressively located right on the shore of Lake Michigan. Their gift shop is pretty sad, but otherwise I think it's a splendid facility. Take a look at www.adlerplanetarium.org/home.shtml OK, I'm dropping the issue now. They have a collection of early astronomical instruments, which was nice, but other than that I thought it was a drag. You'd be much better off spending time in my favorite windy city haunt, the Art Institute of Chicago. BTW, if you tell someone from Chicago that you've traveled, "back east" to visit them, they'll look at you like you're crazy. To them, "back east" is New York. They consider themselves solidly in the mid-west. Seth

Adler Planetarium in Chicago

I'm going to take a trip back east next spring. We've decided to take a day to tour the city of Chicago. Is the Adler Planetarium worth seeing? Has anybody on this list visited that planetarium? Your thoughts are appreciated. Debbie

The Shed Aquarium is on our sight-seeing agenda as well. The planetarium fits nicely into our plans. I just hope we have enough time to see the Sears Tower tool. Thanks for the info. The Adler Planetarium is a must-see for any astronomy enthusiast. Yes - it's absolutely worth seeing! Holy Cow! The Adler is located at the far end of a sort of museum "campus" Chicago operates on the shore of Lake Michigan. The Adler is a manageable walk from both the equally impressive world-class-and-worth-seeing Shed Aquarium and the Field Museum of Natural History. Sounds like a fantastic spring vacation. Hi Chuck, I believe they are from Orion, but I'll check them tonight to be sure. I really like them, and have wanted even more aperture for some time now. I measured my dark adapted pupils at 6 mm not too long ago, so I should be OK there. By the way, does the whole group receive these e-mails we've been exchanging? If not, I need to e-mail Patrick to let him know I want to buy them. One more question: I sent out an e-mail about pier mounting the 800 lbs. telescope that was donated to my High School, but the e-mail was apparently too large because of the picture I included of the telescope. Do you have any sources that discuss the sizing of telescope pier mounts? Thanks, Wayne A. I measure the eye-relief at about 12-13mm, as measured from the glass surface to the Airy disk projected on a piece of wax paper. The rubber eyeguards fold-down. With my eyeglasses on and the guards folded, I can just see the entire FOV with the eyeglass lenses touching the rubber eyeguard. However, since my astigmatism correction is very small, I typically remove my glasses at the eyepiece and re-focus accordingly. And about focusing, this binocular has individual-eyepiece focusing, so each side must be focused independantly. Makes it tough on group observing. A heavy-duty tripod or parallelogram is required due to the sheer mass of the unit. A terrific deep-sky binocular, and Patrick's price is pretty darn good, Wayne.
