Chuck, I see all sorts of observers at star parties. Some folks tend to set up quietly and endure the crowds that drift their way. They pass very little information on to their guests: perhaps that quiet approach is just the ticket for some people. Other astronomers are crowd magnets and seem really to enjoy passing knowledge and excitement along to others. I certainly enjoy watching someone light up when they see something for the first time; I'm equally happy when they've headed home and left me with a little time for myself. I certainly don't think any kind of astronomer is excluded or should feel excluded. Probably the only astronomer behavior that puzzles me is astronomers who take premium eyepieces to star parties and then fuss at people for the whole night. I've got a few El Cruddo brand plossls that are perfect for star parties. First-time viewers are thrilled with what they see and I don't sweat it when some kid puts his thumb on it. I also take a non-goto scope, since there's no harm done if somebody inadvertently knocks the scope out of alignment. A lot of it is just being prepared for Murphy and accepting the fact there will be little foos. You can then relax and enjoy the companionship. Of course, it's equally fun to head off to one of the private star parties. If it works as advertised, it would be pitch-black inside such material. Anyone wearing it would need at least pin-holes to see through. And the national security and privacy problems it will generate stagger the mind! Jeremiah, I just bought a home in Tremonton and will be building an observatory over the next year. I'm looking forward to the dark skies and will welcome other astro-geeks! :) As of now I am still living in Orem, but will be heading your way eventually. Stay in touch and someday we will get together for a little viewing and/or photography. Joe, , I had trouble uploading an image but it was because I forgot to convert from a TIFF file to a JPEG file. Once I made the conversion, I had no problem. I posted a 30 sec image of M13 I took Tuesday night in LaVerkin. I need to do the dark subtraction before stacking a few images. I had to toss out most of the frames due to periodic error in the mount. The M13 picture is on page 5 of my album. Lunar observing - tides - Tides on Great Salt Lake?

One astronomical phenomena I have been remiss in observing is Moon tidal forces. (I admit, I lived near an ocean for about 10 years and one of the Great Lakes for another 6.) "i have three baker-nunn APT's (automatic patrol telescope), up for grabs. one has a new powder coat finish and a new mirror(recoated) but is in pieces. the other two are only slightly apart in original condition. these are perfect for setting up to track near earth objects. the university of calgary has one in service. if you or anybody you know is interested, please contact me."

Up until the last few years, my photography was purely casual. Then I bought a very good (for its day) digital camera and began to get more serious about what I was doing. Haven't really messed about with astro stuff--pretty strictly landscape for me. But as my knowledge has grown, I've appreciated film more and more. Even though film grain makes things more "interesting" on a microscopic scale, it's still got way better resolution that any digital camera I've seen. And the dynamic range is also considerably better. It takes me a lot of Photoshopping to get a digital photo to look anywhere close to a good film shot. Patrick, are you burning the talks in separate sessions? By that I mean burn a talk, eject the CD, burn another talk later, etc? If that's the case, it might be that the Winderz machine can only see the last session. It's been a while since I've done any multisession stuff, but I seem to remember there's a way to incorporate files from previous sessions into the current session.
