I haven't received my magnifier yet so I feel like I was shooting blind. My tracking is good so far with mostly pinpoint stars. I may be ready to try guiding with a longer focal length lens. This Kolob Reservoir site is going to be great for astrophotography. Jim was up there working on the site today. I recorded lots of dark nebulosity in my slides. I was shooting mostly in the Sagittarius and Scorpius regions. I compared my M6 and M7 shots with O'Meara's book "The Messier Objects" and liked mine better. Now I just need to get a hold of a good slide projector. Ours is too old and it heats up the house. Not good in the summer! Anybody have a spare slide projector? Hiya Chuck, The world got hit with a variant of the MyDoom virus. Most of the messages looked like bounced emails, but they certainly weren't that. My--ISP Earthlink--is quite good on filtering viruses, but I still had a hundred or so of these get through before they began to detect it dependably. Luckily I run a Mac, so I'm pretty immune to this sort of thing--at least for now. Many of the messages spoof the return address, so they may appear to be from someone else. If you've got some savvy, you can inspect the full header of the email and determine the culprit. Most of the senders are only guilty of insufficient paranoia--not thinking before opening. -mc Due to repeated and unending spam, I've had to add a couple of list member addresses to my "block" list. I know it's not the fault of the real address owners but I have no choice, there is barely time to read the legitimate messages anymore. I know too that there are programs designed to filter out the bogus from real messages, but as I get email through my office computer only these days there is nothing I can do about it. I'm not in the IT department and am forbidden to add any software to this computer. There are even rules governing precisely what attachments I can and cannot open within emailed messages. Due to repeated and unending spam, I've had to add a couple of list member addresses to my "block" list. I know it's not the fault of the real address owners but I have no choice, there is barely time to read the legitimate messages anymore. I know too that there are programs designed to filter out the bogus from real messages, but as I get email through my office computer only these days there is nothing I can do about it. Sunspot Sketch

Hi Joe, Just an Orion white light filter. Good enough for spots. I am impressed by the H alpha filter views which show granulation and the prominances but frankly the dollars involved are way too high for me. And I also had an opportunity to look through the SLAS H alpha scope and a Colorado H alpha scope and found the former showing much more detail - so, the Colorado offerings are not top notch even at the price they charge in my view. The clubs scope is amazing - I'd like to borrow it some day. Cheers David

Sunspot Sketch

Just posted in the photo gallery a sketch I did today of the huge (!) sunspot group. With the small sunspot on the limb, are the brighter areas where the prominence plasma is returning to the surface? If not, what causes the brightning. I guess its not seen on the others because of the more direct view. No doubt H alpha picks it up everywhere. Cheers David

Strange object observed tonight

Whilst showing the moon to friends through my 80mm APO tonight at approx 2115hrs we saw a tumbling pointed xmas tree shape (or strange plane?) cross the crescent and move south staying at I think about 13hrs RA (I had not bothered to polar align accurately so can't be exactly sure on this, but not much ra adjustment required, a lot of dec). It appeared to be in a polar orbit as it got smaller and further away - it was not falling. When it was close to the moon it seemed to be more reflective on one side. It had some thickness to it and I'm going to guess it was about 1/10 deg when it crossed the moon. We stopped folloing it when a house got in the way. What have we seen? Cheers David
