Air conditions that affect most of the senses mandates that this afternoon's ride be cancelled. (For the curious that would be sight, taste, smell, touch, but not necessarily hearing unless the gunk stops up your ears) Plus my illogical choice of placing a minimum temperature further restricts the available options and it looks like today wont make it to 40 degrees. It's funny to see everyone's different perspective to the same issue. For us, having out of state rides eligible for club mileage was not about getting the extra miles for the high mileage award. Seems like the high mileage leader (both male and female) did the out of state rides without benefit of club mileage and still kicked our butts!! (that was a joke!) We just thought that offering club mileage for out of state rides might give others incentive to join in. Some of the best times we had last year were at rides that were off the schedule. It gave us an opportunity to meet club members on a level that you don't get when you do a local ride. We certainly understand that everyone is at a different place in their lives and have different obstacles to being able to ride all the time, we are no different - money issues, our grandchild that lives with us half time, even older kid crap!!! If the consensus is not to give club mileage for out of state rides, I don't think it will be a big deal to the people that do those rides. I'm sure they are going to ride the ride they want to do regardless. But maybe having those rides on the schedule would give that person that wants to join in the opportunity to know that club members are going to go do that ride, and possibly they could car pool down, or have someone that would shuttle their bike. Once again we degenerate into name calling and personal attacks. Let us please remember that a club exists to serve all its members with equal opportunities. If people feel that personal mileage wars are the function of BBTC's existence, then perhaps we should create a category that gives extra points for changing flats, or leading a paceline for more miles than anyone else...maybe an award for the lightest bike. Susan, if your request is due to my comment, I publicly apologize. That was my attempt (lame though it may have been) at humor. You raised valuable insight as to the competing purposes re the mileage competition. The mention of Palm Springs, Las Vegas, and people able to ride all the time, however, focused my focus-challenged mind on the evils of an 8-5, M-F job, especially during smog-alert, cold temperature inversions. I think Susan raises some excellent points. However, it's painfully evident that she completely misses the obvious point of it all. Clearly, people who don't ride bikes should do all the work so we ALL can ride every day. [BBTC Ride_calendar] Rides for the months of January and February!

The dead line for posting rides for Jan and Feb is fast approaching. If you are thinking of leading any rides during these winter months you only have five more days to post them in time for approval and getting them into our newsletter. FYI: It has been asked if out of state rides would be eligible for club mileage credit. To date, it has been club policy to not award mileage for out of state starts and since we are already into the winter riding cycle we will continue to operate under that same ruling. What are your thoughts on this? Would you, the members of BBTC, like to allow miles earned for out of state rides if they are posted within the guide lines of the ride calendar? Or, does it create an unfair advantage for those fortunate to have the flexibility to go south during the winter months and extend their riding season to year round? I realize not all of us are inspired by the potential to be the high mileage leader of the club but are happy with going out for a fun pedal with good friends on a nice day and don't care either way about the miles. I understand and think that's great, I would still welcome your input on the subject as I begin and continue to learn the role of road captain and work to create rides for every member and bicycling enthusiast.
