Colorado events in danger The Colorado cycling community is up in arms with the news that the Colorado State Patrol has added a new policy that could disable some the biggest bicycle events in the state. The new policy limits bicycle and triathlon events to 2500 riders, but the limit can be lowered at any time, putting the state's most popular events at risk. Bicycle races, tours, charity rides, group rides and triathlons are all affected. Bicycle Colorado, a non-profit coalition of individuals, organizations and bicycling-related businesses, has posted an online petition <http://bicyclecolo.org/site/page.cfm?PageID=651> urging interested cyclists to voice their concerns to state officials. "The State Patrol says that they are using this ban to 'ensure safety,'" Bicycle Colorado's Web site states, "but a random cap has no effect on the safety of bicyclists. Safety is based on good event planning, educated bicyclists, traffic management plans, safe roads, and law-abiding motorists. A well-run event can be safe for 10,000 bicyclists and a poorly run event can be unsafe for 100 riders. An arbitrary cap punishes everyone and discourages all events." Events that draw more than 2500 participants include the Iron Horse Classic, the Elephant Rock Cycling Festival, the Triple Bypass, the Mt. Evans Hill Climb, the MS 150 charity ride, the Courage Classic, the Tour de Cure and the Bicycle Tour of Colorado. "We formally asked the State Patrol to reverse their decision and they declined," Bicycle Colorado states on its Web site. "In State Patrol's reply to Bicycle Colorado they said that, 'the primary reason for this change in policy is due to safety.' But according to Scot Harris, director of the Elephant Rock ride, the state's largest bicycle event, they've had only one car-bike crash in the 19-year history of this event. States like New York, Texas, Iowa, Illinois, and California safely handle events with 10,000, 20,000 and even 30,000 bicyclists. There is no reason Colorado cannot do so as well." If this continues, it could set a precedent for other states.

Listen here. I'm going to respond because no one's quit the BBTC lately. Like some, I don't get heavy into the mileage competition. We join in when the ride sounds cool -- and also fits into child-care, work and cosmos considerations. But some do. In fact, in just the last year, I met a few who do care, and who also lead some great rides, have tons of experience, are good to listen to, learn from, and flip ... stuff ... to. The BBTC is better for their involvement. So let's not flush the baby down w/ the diapers; wash the codine off the binkie; etc. Those middle-ground suggestions in which mileage is granted for legitmate out-of-area rides, of which BBTC riders have notice and opportunity to join, may well be the way to go. I dunno ... work 'em like the Cactus Hugger -- just do something about the snow, okay?!? But I'm NOT lending a whit's support to any European forays ... at least not until I get more time off from a new job.... Club Mileage? Well, so far the response to a simple question of what constitutes club rides eligible for mileage credit has been interesting. I had hoped to hear from more of the membership base and for it all to be a positive response which except for a poorly presented sarcasm has been informative. Please understand, no ride will be prevented from being allowed to be listed on the ride calendar. Whether the ride will earn club mileage credit or not was the issue to be discussed. Looking at past records most members are not motivated by earning mileage as much as the security and enjoyment of riding with other cyclists. Yes, there are those of us that want to accumulate as many miles as possible with the club and look to wear their high mileage jersey with pride, and I applaud your efforts and dedication. There are also those of us out having a friendly competition with another member or two over who records more miles. Then, there are those of us who love to ride and its great seeing the miles grow on the mileage list but don't really care whether we achieve the high mileage ranking. Yes, I am currently sitting on top of the mileage list, but I know I won't stay there because its ski season and if I have any free time it's going to be on my skis and I won't be back on the road with my bike until the resorts close and the snow melts. By the way, anyone wanting to ski with me is always welcome. Most of my resort skiing will be at the Park City Mountain Resort and if I ever have a full day off from work I like to go back country. [BBTC Ride_calendar] Maybe?

Yo BBTC! I have something for everyone to chew on (high fiber). About out of state rides, I think that we are all actually a lot closer to the same mindset then we might think. Take a deep breath and lets have a group hug. Now, donÂt you feel better? (Boy, am I full of crap or what!) We have a club mileage contest. This is a competition, and for all competitions we must have rules to keep it fair. But I think we are trying too hard to guard against one scenario, and in doing so, reduce the opportunities for us to explore some unique riding experiences. After all, our goal is to provide opportunities to ride together. Can you say ÂKnee jerkÂ. What the rule is intended to do, is to keep one of us from taking the winter months off, going to Bermuda, and riding 10,000 miles and claiming club credit. This wouldnÂt be fair to those like me, who are stuck with my miserable life in SLC. I also agree with what was said at the last board meeting, you shouldnÂt be able to plan a week long vacation tour of the west coast, knowing no one else could go, and put it in the ride schedule just to get mileage credit. I also canÂt schedule a ride every day that goes from my house to where I work, thatÂs silly. I think Saturday rides shouldnÂt count since I work. IÂm kidding, to make a point. The point is we all have constraints as to where, and how much we can, or want to ride. I think that the geographic state line may not be the best criteria to determine if a ride is acceptable for the ride schedule. Maybe some out of state rides should count, but only if they satisfy a certain set of guidelines. As it is now, maybe LOTOJA should count because it is in state. After all, it is UtahÂs premier bicycle event. But the upcoming Death Valley rides donÂt count, but maybe they should as many club members are going to ride together. Some club members are going to great lengths to plan this event, and provide it to members. If LOTOJA doesnÂt count, maybe Cycle Salt Lake Century shouldnÂt count either. My point is, maybe they all should count. It was pointed out to me that more BBTCrs went to do LOTOJA then did the club ride that same day. Also, we had more in Tucson then did the club ride last month. We are in the business of promoting bicycling. We should allow as many rides to count as possible, short of the absurd, like Âmy daily commute rideÂ, or ÂTour of my grandmaÂs house on thanksgivingÂ. This is my suggestion- Out of state, or event rides, or tours should count if they meet these guidelines. 1. It is listed in the ride schedule. (Obviously) 2. Because it may take more planning for clubbies to participate, it should be listed in the newsletter two months in advance. 3. Someone should step up as a designated Âride leaderÂ. Someone who can organize rendezvous points and times, help with sign up info and so forth. 4. Maybe a ride should be either a fee ride, put on by another club, or recognized by an official cycling organization like LAB, UMCA, or USCF. Not just ÂIÂve always wanted to ride around Minot, North DakotaÂ. 5. Lastly, and maybe a little far out, Maybe we could get jerseys, Âteam BBTCÂ for members to buy so we can represent!!! Maybe ÂBBTC century / Ultra distance teamÂ or ÂBBTC ULTRA tandem teamÂ. Any excuse to buy more gear! (Yes clubbies would buy it, no cost to the club) Here is an example, our fictitious Club member ÂLance LemondÂ is going to ride RAGBRI. He wants to make it a club event, so he sends info about his plans, inviting everyone who is interested, to that goof ball that does the newsletter. He provides info about signup, transport, ride descriptions, and so forth to any members who e-mail or calls. Mr. Lemond lists it in the ride schedule. Our boy Lance handles the signup sheet just like a regular BBTC ride. This would provide a great opportunity for us to maybe go on a great new adventure! Maybe someone has always wanted to do that ride, but didnÂt want to go it alone. We should go, as a club to the LAB Rally, and the Tandem Rally, and so on. At one of the hikes, we even talked about planning a club adventure to Europe. Sound fun? I am glad that so many of us went to Tucson because it is one of my two favorite rides of all time. The experience was made better by sharing it with friends. I would also love to share my other favorite rides with BBTC folks as much as I look forward to going on adventures that someone else plans.
