Oh my gosh I hate this damn drum machine thing!!!! I wish I could understand why he chose it over the real thing. Does anyone have any informed data on this? ~Anne

The drummer info is on Stingus.net: Though Vinnie is doing the promotional tour right now, Keith Carlock will take on full-time drummer duty starting in January. No need to buy the Seal IV just yet guys, you can listen to the whole album on http://www.seal.com/sealiv/index.cfm# and click on "launch Seal player" and listen - highly recommended ! thoughts of my trip

(Please don't mind the long post from a rare poster) I left Canada on Sept 11 for a 2.5 week trip which I learned shortly before I left would through lucky coincidence coincide with a performance by my favourite pop singer songwriter ... of course our hero. Lucky because my trip took me to northern Bavaria, a scant seven hour drive from where I was staying. I just got home today and can't sleep (it's over 35 hours sans sleep for me right now, strange) I'm half drunk and feel I should write this post. Purchasing tickets for this show in Paris (albeit as expensive as they were) was richly rewarding. I combined it with a trip to Cologne (for those with a penchant for German beer ... go to Cologne. Drinking a Koelsch on the cobbled streets of Cologne is extremely satisfying) to meet Barbara, a fellow sting.com member. We three (my fiance, myself and her) drove to Paris together and she was an immeasurable help in navigating Paris traffic. (To other north americans not familiar with Paris: the traffic there takes the worst of Spain and Brazil, blends them and spits them out at high velocity, having someone tell you when to turn and thereby not worrying about direction was incredible fun, I loved being obnoxious when nothing less was expected ;).) We strolled along the Champs Elysee (sp?) and had some drinks before converging pilgrammically (is that word) on L'Olympia. We had excellent seats and were completely on edge with excitement. It was interesting to talk to Barbara about our mutual interest in Stings music (my fiance has a lesser interest). She came to Sting through a love of the Police. I on the other hand always respected the Police and enjoyed their music but wasn't what one would call fanatic. It's been discussed recently on this list the "shock to the system" that the DOTBT recording caused some Police fans. It was what got me interested in Stings work, I'm principally a Jazz fan. I knew of Kirkland and of course of B Marsalis and so was interested. It was because of his daliance with Jazzy arrangements that he caused a nurturing of my enjoyment of his work. When the show started and Jason took the stage playing Jazz (I didn't recognize the tune immediately) I was in heaven (I'm a shitty jazz piano player). Unfortunately the opening number for me was the highlight (maybe except for the wonderful raport between Dominic and Sting during Fields of Gold). But the show was outstanding. You can count me in the group that strongly dislikes the production choices that have been made on the new recording. Never Coming Home in my opinion (as recorded) is a sin. I was dissappointed to see Kippers setup onstage as we entered the theatre, but his work wasn't as intrusive as I was afraid it would be. I understand that Sting loves his energy, but I am unable to explain why he lets Kipper ruin a wonderfull song like Never Coming Home. Maybe I'm biased by the great piano solo that is ruined by the drum machine but it pisses me off every time I hear it. But I'm rambling. The show was amazing. One of the better shows I've seen him perform. He was very into the mood and it seemed he loved the edge that the new material provided. And I have to say the moments when he mumbled lyrics while he couldn't remember/was reading ... I love that. It's so easy to view him as a mill, a machine, I am energized in my enjoyment of his work by seeing him electing to struggle a bit. I just wish he would struggle a bit more in the studio and bring in musicians to replace the machines that he replaced the musicians with. If anybody is still reading, thanks, I just felt a need to express what I felt about the show. It may seem I've had more negative things to say than positive, but the show was amazing. And by 'show' I'm including everything. The visuals were great. I've heard criticisms about crassness and inappropriateness, but I thought they went great with the music. All the best, Mark. NB1, I picked up the Euro version of ... All This Time to replace my stolen NA version since it contains "Mad About You", Love that. ATT is my favourite sting recording and I'm very happy to have another track from that evening on the new recording. NB2, To all those NA who have not yet heard Sacred Love, I was appaled by a few select tracks, but it is indeed growing on me (as others have mentioned). Don't dispise it on first listen. This record has the greatest number of very poor tracks that sting has released (imo), but some are great.

BT is a remixer/producer (think "trance"). He's worked with a slew of artists such as Sarah MacLachlan and Tori Amos. Kinda shocked me when I saw his name associated with Sting many months ago.

Paris, some photos and a glass of green tea

Ciao everybody, One week ago, exactly one hour ago, HE made our day ! What started as a bad day (car problem while reaching the airport . we were veeery late . I feared we lose the flight ..!) became one of the most unforgettable days for us .. As we were on the plane reaching Paris from Milan, my husband Achille and I complained about leaving two kids at home (Sunday 21st September was even the second birthday of our younger child, our little Federica .) and forgetting everything when Sting is touring . and then, just an hour in Paris made us change our mind : actually just seeing him crossing the street in front of Olympia theatre made us change our minds . Yes, he was crossing the street alone, with Bill and no fans around . In five seconds my husband managed to open our luggage (we went directly from the plane .) throwing everything on the street, found our camera and took a great photo of Sting and me, after signing my diary. We could speak few words, I told him we were coming from Milan just to see his concert : he sayd he knew Milano, nice Milano. I am sending the photos to Tina : I hope you could see them someday : my husband did a great job and the photo (as far as Sting is concerned) came out really terrific !!! About the concert, Inside was a confirmation for me: I liked it from the website, live was great and I liked also the panels and the shadows on the screens . very impressing and fitted for the song! Great feelings for Whenever I say . : the vocalist was absolutely great, and if I can say so, I really liked her duet much more than that of Mary J. Blige herself on festivalbar, Saturday night. Other things : nice to see Trudie and Coco dancing during Every breath .. looked like they were having fun, as well ! Lots of pros for this concert, still some cons such us he still plays too little : we are always eager to hear him, we are never tired nor satisfied to hear him playing, we could stay there all night . but 70 minutes is really too short ! and, I am within those who would like to see some changes in the track list, maybe with some new entries. To close this extremely long post, these days left me the nice opportunity to meet many fans we read in the internet, to greet again wonderful people like those who work for Sting behind the scenes, and above all left me some great photos and the glass of tea Sting drank during the concert !!! Special ciao from Milan to Tina, Martin, Luuk, Lydia (always the greatest . and luckiest!!) and Giovanni, Stina and Tony, Barbara and Guido, Roberto and Enrico, Jutta and Stephanka, Jeremy, Paul and all the others .. Enjoy the shows in New York, you lucky guys . Hope to see you soon, still in the first raws .! would-be Italian translator of Broken Music

Hi everyone, here¹s a hopeful SOS I¹m sending out. Sting¹s autobiography is being published in November by Bantam Books, I¹m Italian and I¹m a translator (I work for three among the major Italian publishing houses), so it might not be too late to try to be the Italian translator of Broken Music. What I need to know is which Italian publishing house is going to buy (or has already bought) the book from Bantam Books, then I¹d be able to contact them and propose myself. I¹ve already emailed Bantam but got no answer yet, and of course tried with Giovanni as well. I know this might sound like a rather odd request to most of you, but if anyone can be of any help in making my dream come true and making Broken Music ³the book of MY life², I¹d be forever grateful! Someone earlier remarked on the credit to "The Bard" for "Like A Beautiful Smile" which appears in the album booklet, even though the track doesn't appear on all countries' editions of the album. They asked if the song was originally meant to be on there. I remember seeing it on the tracklisting when the tracklisting first appeared. Back then, we were also told that there would be a b-side which was a humourous song about car thieves. It looks like they then switched "Stolen Car" and "Like A Beautiful Smile" around. This begs the question - did they do the right thing? I can't really imagine the album with "Smile" in the middle now...
