Well, from what I remember then none of the subscribers ever got their BOBs. I can remember getting two of these digests in a day, almost daily, that had ten or more messages in each and every single one was "Did you get your Bob12?" "Where's my Bob?" "I got Bob12 but still haven't seen Bob9" "I got one Bob but not a Tog." I stuck through that stupid, vapid, shit without bitching more than once about it but people are getting all bent out of shape about ten or fifteen e-mails a week discussing music, the business, past experiences of band members, and off topic ranting. Give me a break. People obviously got a lot of BOB's but the only song that got any real discussion was the Zeto track and that was only once it was released on Bless You! And the discussion was bitching about how awful it is!!! If this is a mailing list about Orb music, let's talk about music. Not screwed up shipping or whether or not one believes Thrash is Thrash or if he's a good person. He was a founding member of the band and his experiences behind the scenes illustrate changes that occurred in this band and even explains the current state of the band since he obviously still interacts with them to some degree. If it rubs you the wrong way, hit [delete] or scroll past it. Like I said before, you can only really post one or two short statements and questions about a "new" unknown white label or compilation and they really are pretty meaningless since only the purchaser of said item can actually LISTEN to it. It helps the collector to know it's out there so they can search for it but what good does it do those of us that want to listen to the Orb? If it gets upped to an ftp that's just great but I'd really like to read descriptions of the music and the way people react to its elements rather than the eBay link and the color of the printing on the catalogue number (not that that's not important but if that's all that got posted I'd unsubscribe in a heartbeat). Since no-one seems to feel like sharing that, I'd like to read more Thrash raving (though he seems to have ducked out again). Tough call. Highlights for me include SE Berlin's "Shuttle" (BOB1), Conduit's "Snowblind" (BOB10) and Takayuki Shiriashi's "Surfin' the Desert" off the aforementioned BOB14. Best BOBs overall are probably BOB4 Creature and BOB8 Fusionic. One man's opinion. Anyone agree/disagree? I know others on the list were all about Loophead (Orb + System 7), but I never really felt that one. Have to revisit it one of these days... JG

What I really miss is series after series of posts about "where's my BOB?" Jesus Christ that got old. I don't remember but one post about the quality of ANY of that music. Not one. "Wow, that was a great song on BOB10, don't you think?" "This guy on BOB8 sucks ass but the song is starting to grow on me." Was there any of that? NO. I would so much rather listen to these guys make idle threats at one another and throw poop at each other than sterile, meaningless number hunts. I've started a few threads by making a forceful comment about something Orb related. I've seen others do it. It's somebody else's turn now. Give me a reason to go listen to an Orb record or a Sunday Teatime. Give me a reason to go listen to something I've already listened to a thousand fucking times! What else is the point of a list like this other than to entertain us? Record swapping is great, hunting for rarities is great, waiting for a new album sucks, but there is so little worth reading about any of those things. How many "new" discoveries of back catalogue Orb have we had in the last year? One? Two? What was that worth, five utterly dry posts with questions about it? If that much? What drew me to the Orb at the onset (ok, so I'd only heard a couple of import singles before the abbreviated American version of ABTUW came out which was way late for most hipsters of the day) was the sense of wonder at the journey they delivered. Moments in space. Moments with some stoned chick talking about clouds. Moments of suspense that open into ultimate dub. I just ate that shit up. I still love that. I liked Cydonia a lot (though I really liked the advance version that was on Napster much better) but it doesn't approach the scope of the first stuff. A few of the Thurs. Teatime shows have been really really close IMHO (heh, I've never used that before... probably won't again because it's really gay) and Bbbroo's totally killer mix from last year comes closer still. THAT'S what I want to read on the list. Where the killer sounds are and why they're killer. And I really like getting a good laugh. More good laughs please. And Goddammit There Is Nothing Wrong With the Chi-Lites!!! Next you're going to be saying that Gap Band sucked and Earth Wind and Fire were talentless. I'm gonna beat you mercilessly with my rendition of "Rocketman" next time I'm in your neighborhood!!! Does anyone have an equipment list for the original Orb line-up? I'm trying to distill my live set-up so I just wanted some ideas. One type of engineering is getting the sound from point a to point b sounding as good as possible. Another type of engineering is treating the sound arriving at point b or along the route from a to b at the proper points so that when it arrives at the speakers is sounds like you were asked to make it sound (or what is "best" that your experience and other education tell you). The mixing part is then getting all those faders and stuff lined up so each sound is at the right level, etc. "Placing" each sound in the mix. Of course, mixing has now become its own instrument, thanks to Eno, Orb, FSOL, Public Enemy, etc., etc., where the act of twisting a nob on the mixer live while a sound is playing (especially fx) is part of the performance as well as the mixing and producing. DJing is a distillation of this process to two volumes and a crossfader. I don't know if the Orb used automation on the early stuff or not (Thrash, any answer?) but this is a way to record these movements in real time. Of course now you can do this in your pc with a good ProTools interface. I produced quite a few pieces when I lived in New Orleans that I left the final mix to my partner because I couldn't get it right. I'd done all the engineering, played most of the instruments, tracked and retracked vocal parts, while working with a First Nation Minister who played the jawbone of an ass that was strung with three strings that were tuned according to the moment, and by the time it was all recordered and ready to mix I couldn't hear it clearly anymore. Just a little project studio using a Tascam Portastudio 488 cassette 8-track. We had a reel to reel but never could get it working. So my partner mixed it and I said, "GREAT!!!" We still have the DAT. Sigh... Strange how the world can collapse on you suddenly. Speaking of stuff I've produced, I've got some weird new stuff up at my iuma site. It's all made from voices. They are not on the Island label, but seem to be variations from studio tapes. Did enterprising engineers and producers "produce" these.
