Wind comfort

Hi all, I know this has mostly to do with experience and such, but what kind of wind are you all comfortable in with your Monty. Had a nice day today but was blowing 20+ and I wasn't sure. So better on the driveway wishing I was sailing than vice versa! Beer

El Nino Rides!

Hi All! I took your advice and went sailing! It was looking dark and gloomy and I was ready for weather, but it turned out to be a beautiful day! It was pretty windy for my first time really sailing El Nino, but it was fine. There was water splashing everywhere outside the boat, but hardly a drop hit me. Very dry, very impressive. You'll see how the sail went with the link below. The video doesn't do the wind justice at all. I'd say it would have been right on the edge of what the Snipe could handle single handed. But really not that big a deal on the Monty. After getting back in, I spent a little time tooling around the harbor and practicing some boat handling. Some one on here told me it was quite dinghy like earlier... I have to agree! No problem. Also, on the way in, I put the rudder in its up position ( as in old school up, 2 pintles) and started hugging the coast line very slowly. The bottom was RIGHT there, but on I went. Probably 2 ft. The depth finder wasn't registering any depth at all. Would have been easy peasy to hop out and wade to shore. I was like 6-7 feet away. All in all a cool day. Enjoy the video, I just cobbled it together really fast, so don't expect any short film awards! What are you supposed to do with the rudder while at anchor or a mooring? Do you do anything differently for a short stop vs overnight? How about when rough conditions are expected?

After just reading Michael Manns book about sailing his M15 to Hawaii, I just can't imagine what it would be like being below in an M15 and having angry swells, confused seas and high winds making a punching bag of the boat. Good thing he was in his early 20's and the bones still bend and not shatter! I have had trouble punching through some big swells and waves under certain conditions on Lake Superior with my M17. You get your speed up only to be slowed by nosing into the next big wave. I guess there is something to be said about heavy displacement. Wind speeds above 20 get pretty nerve wracking to me. Mast Step - Rigging -

Ahoy Sailors! I am new to the group as I just bought an M23 and am starting to fall in love. My dad and I are in the process of redoing all the woodwork on the inside and out. We wet sanded it all with teak oil and then put about 8 coats of varnish on all the interior hatch covers, and are getting ready to do all the wood on the sides down below. I am towing the boat tomorrow over to my dad's driveway in St Paul to save drive time back and forth from the boat while we do some work. I am going to also go thru all of the standing rigging and probably redo it all. Looking for tips there if anyone has instructions they can send to me. Another one of my projects is the mast step. It is free span under the mast inside the boat. Mine is 1982 for the vintage, so newer boat with respect to how they do the decks. I noticed there is sag and deck flex under the mast. My plan was to cut it out and redo it and I wanted to see if anyone else has done that and what tips they can share with me and if you might have some pictures!! Please advise, as I can use the help. Heading back to the ramp I wasted more time prodding the motor, sailed right past the dock downwind, and had to work back up to it. We made it with the grace of an ostrich on ice skates; I soaked myself to the waist again getting back on the trailer. A fellow brought another sailboat in to the dock a few minutes after us. He said, “Was that you that sailed out of here a while ago?” I mumbled excuses. “No,” he said, “it looked really good. I want to try that some time.” I grew several inches taller and gazed into the distance with the keen knowing eye of the weathered sailor.

North Carolina ICW Sailing

Every spring I try to make a couple of trips to the IntracoastalWaterway between Morehead City and Wilmington NC. The ICW in this area is a series of linked sounds, creeks, and ocean inlets. The sailing season starts in January but is over by mid-May. Strong currents, limited depths, and narrow passages make this area 99% power boat country, and as the weather gets warmer they are more and more in use. Additionally, early May sees the start the annual migration of large cruising boats intent on getting from South to North ASAP. Separated from the ocean by a narrow barrier island and a mile of marsh & small hammocks of trees you can often hear the surf pounding as you sail. Eleven inlets over a 90 mile route connect the ICW to the ocean. These inlets are what make the sailing interesting. Imagine a big tub with eleven spigots and drains, large and small, and cosmic forces are opening them at different times and degrees. Also imagine some of those spigots fed first into other tubs which then drain into your tub after the spigot is turned off. Finally imagine that NOAA only officially informs you of when two of the major spigots are on or off. The other times are subject to extrapolation, or more importantly*, *that colloquialism referred to as* local knowledge* in some guides and pilots. Well I got some local knowledge on yesterday’s trip. I arrived at the public ramp in Hampstead expecting to catch a slack tide to start my sail south. Ouch, I guessed wrong on slack tide. With the wind at 2-3 knots I could make less than ½ knot in mid-channel. By hugging the shore I found less current and could make ¾ knot against the flow. With the slightest distraction from the helm I could easily make headway backwards which I did once or twice. At one point a paddle-boarder passed me. Time for Plan B which was to motor southwards until the wind came up. Around noon a burgeoning sea breeze started to develop and I started to creep back . By 1 PM it was possible to sail a pleasant 11 mile beam reach at 3 knots back to the ramp. Occasionally it was necessary to harden up to a close reach to get closer to the shore. Had to stay close to the shore again because after crossing the Little Topsail Inlet I picked up a foul current again. It is usually possible to sail within five or six boat-lengths of the seaward side of the ICW in these coastal areas. However, near the inlets it is necessary to avoid bars encroaching onto the ICW waterway . The other areas to watch out are where dredging operations have created new islands. These may have shallow areas around them. Where dredge material has been deposited onto existing islands or marshes the deeper water (3-5’) often comes close to the shore. On the landward side of the waterway the shallow water reaches out several hundred feet in places.
