85% jib - lee helm

Today I had my M15 out in the mouth of the California Delta checking out the mothball fleet ships, and there were 25 knot gusts so I decided to test out my 85% jib and 2nd reef point in the main (both new Elliott / Pattison sails). The boat was easy to handle with the small sail area, but I couldn't get it balanced properly and it had significant lee helm. This makes me think the 85% jib is perhaps too big to balance out a double reefed main, and a still smaller storm jib should be paired with a 2nd reef. Has anyone else tried this configuration before? Any ideas on how I could tune out the lee helm? My mast is raked rearward and I normally have slight weather helm in all winds with the full main and working jib. Thanks, Tyler Davis, CA M15 #157 "Defiant"

Cruiser Challenge 2015

Montgomery 15’s took first thru 5th (or maybe 6th) in last weekend’s Monterey race in the small boat class! There are some REALLY good sailors in 15’s. Sage 17’s were first and second in the medium boat class. Didn’t see any M-17’s out there even tho there are a bunch in the area- too bad. This was a fun race, held by a great group. Winds were about 15 in the puffs on Sat, and a little less on Sunday. Just right in my opinion.

Looking for a new mainsail

Are there any domestic, custom sail makers familiar with Montgomery 17 mainsails? First hand experience appreciated. I am also considering roller furling on the jib. Is there a difference between roller furling or roller reefing a jib besides spelling? Thanks, Tom B

Mast rake on my Montgomery 17

I am finally ironing out the difficulties with my rig, such as sagging main sail and weird position of the spreaders. I now have the mast stepped on the boat on my driveway. I have the standing rigging tensioned with the split backstay turnbuckle wound out as far as I feel is safe. The mast rake still looks excessive and the shroud ends of the spreaders are actually forward of the mast. This cannot be correct. The rig is stock in every way. Any help will be appreciated.. Also my mainsail, which is 38years old will not set properly. When I haul it up the mast and cleat off the main halyard, and then use a cunningham to tension the luff I cannot get the bag out of the lower third of the mainsail adjacent to the tack. The outhaul is also tight so the foot is as tight as it can be. I seem to remember a remark made on this site once about the luff rope actually shrinking thus preventing setting the mainsail properly. Is this what I am dealing with now? Fair winds, Tom B.

Traveler Location

Is there any sailing advantage, other than crew convenience, to moving the traveler aft in my older M17 like the newer boats as opposed to leaving it all the way forward on the cockpit sole? It seems it would have less control over the boom, covering a smaller arc of travel, the farther aft it is mounted. On the other hand, I can see where it would put less stress on the boom and be easier to adjust the further aft it is. Traveler Location

Henry, I moved my traveler up onto a board attached across the cockpit and tucked in just below the sill of the companionway hatch. I was able to fill a half dozen potential leaking holes in the cockpit sole and the sheeting angle was widened since the traveler track is not about 8 inches higher. When at anchor the main sheet is stopped to one side or the other with traveler rail sliding stops and the added width of the step into the cabin makes for better footing. I did this with my first M-17 many years ago and it worked out just fine. It is now on my present M-17 as well. Fair winds, TomB. M17, #258, "AS IS"

However, as you mentioned the Thetford 135 is no longer being manufactured. But, not to worry, If you buy the replacement model, which is slightly larger, you can remold the base to fit. All you need to do is fill the waste tank (base) with some boiling water. Apply downward pressure (sit on it) with the unit in place. Drink two beers (your choice) while the water cools. Empty the waste tank and you're all set. This is the process I used and it works beautifully.
