Charlie: picture attached showing the strapeye (transom) and v-cleat (cockpit combing backrest) hardware that WaveFront recommends for the TillerClutch. from the aft cockpit corner it is 12" to the v-cleat and 12" to the strapeye. there are two options for the v-cleat: plastic or metal. plastic bonus is if the pressure gets so great it will break before tearing out the of the fiberglass, but will not hold as firm as metal. contact Katherine and Pete, info(a)wavefront.com, to purchase the hardware. there are a few negatives to this install: as noted above the hardware can rip out of the fiberglass (installing a backing plate is very very hard as your hands will not fit between the cockpit wall and the transom, and to reach the location of the v-cleat you must cut out the cockpit locker pan); next using the aft cleats the control lines will better hold the tiller (and can't be ripped out); third is drilling more holes in your boat. the TillerClutch on my M17 and S17 use the aft cleats for the three reasons above. note: be sure to loosen at least one side of the control line, and the tillerclutch is unengaged, before moving the rudder up/down. the tillerclutch will stop the tiller from moving up/down (see above comment about ripping hardware out of fiberglass). :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 4/15/14, Charlie Fortner <charlie(a)rentrof.net> wrote: I sure do like my newly installed TillerClutch. Hey Robbin, I think you should query the master Jerry M about the bulkhead/compression post/support issue. It seems to me that the mast and tabernacle would have some sort of support underneath the coachroof. As you know, my M23 was modified when I acquired her. The area underneath the tabernacle had been rebuilt, the area moved a few inches, and a metal plate added below at the top of the bulkhead compression post "boards". (re: those pics I sent). I wonder if perhaps your standing rigging had been over tightened at some point in time. Anyway, whatever core material you choose to employ, it will be better than what you removed! Deck repair

Hi All, Between availability and the small amount needed and the desire to not use balsa again I am ordering a sheet of diviney foam, scored on a scrim. The repair will take about four square feet above my v-berth in the M 17. Has anybody used this particular product? I am looking for personal knowledge hints on problems I might encounter with this stuff. I have read all the literature on installing it. Fair winds, Tom B M-17, #258, 77'

Hi Robbin, Was all the damp balsa isolated to the area you have exposed? If so, that should be a very manageable repair. I used a product called Coremat when I rebuilt the foredeck of my M17. Good luck with everything, once again, owning a sailboat is a long learning curve! Keep us posted please. Contemplating a change...

I've got a 2002 Catalina Capri, tall mast, fin keel, that I'm contemplating selling - and quite like the Montgomery 15 and 17... The boat is in Burlington, VT, and needs nothing. Set up for racing, all lines lead aft for easy single-handing, asym and sym kites, (sym is brand new), 5 horse 4-stroke Honda, double axle trailer with brakes. Would consider working out a trade at market/survey values. The Capri is great, only raced her once, and am thinking of down-sizing only as newer work obligations have limited my usage, and something a little easier to handle in terms of trailering would make a lot of sense for me. I have not yet listed her anywhere else - might not until at least late June, as that's the earliest I'll get a chance to launch anyway. Could be seen on her trailer at the boatyard, currently under a tarp. Any interest? Please reply directly to me, rather than on the list. alecmccandless(a)gmail.com -Alec

Becky, The PO sounds like they have a good plan - From here, it looks like the shackle is the real culprit. Not the knot. May be that the shackle has been forced thru the trunk by the trailer keel roller? Looks like the knot 'came along for the ride'. Remove core from new uphaul line (double braid dyneema would be good choice ) and use shorter smaller shackle (that one in photo looks like 5/16 or 3/8 galv bow shackle - like anchor chain type).Splice to shackle - repair trunk -Remember the board weighs < 200# so search out a good properly shaped and smaller shackle for the application. (narrow 'D' type shackle) I don't think a sleeve on the trunk will do much for the 'squirt factor' - beware chafe at the uphaul pennant. (we use a paper towel tightly wrapped around uphaul - cheesy- but meets all criteria and no chafe - in the past we employed a shop rag - years ago - til 'someone' winched it onto the drum and made quite the nutfudgecluster) A piece of innertube material with a slit in center - glued to the top of trunk over the hole works too - use 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Go get this finished up so you can start sailing! ! Good luck, Have Fun, Go Sailing! GO I replaced my CB pennant/uphaul for the PO when I was 'in the boat biz' about 24 years ago -don't remember if I spliced it or knotted it - I will post the day it fails - does that fall under 'deferred maintenance" ? It's Alive..... (I couldn't restrain myself) Recommend further evaluation and needed repairs by a qualified environmental contractor..... and I am sticking to it. GO In a message dated 4/10/2014 4:03:59 P.M. US Mountain Standard Time, thomaspbuzzi(a)gmail.com writes: Something is growing through the fiberglass headliner above the v-berth in my Montgomery 17. When I pulled the pulpit yesterday morning there were a couple of places water got into the hull beneath each side of the pulpit. I can see a half moon of white powder on the headliner radiating out from each side of the bow from where the fasteners leaked. There also within the half moon of water damage was a "crop" of brown things growing upside down through the fiberglass headliner where the wet out of cloth did not fill the voids in the fiberglass cloth. They looked like cork material. I brushed them off and set off a mold bomb and buttoned up the boat for the day. This morning after opening up the boat there was a new crop of these brown things growing down from the headliner where they had been yesterday. With the observed growth rate I suspect they are some sort of fungus like a mushroom. I suspect that some spore or other found its way inside the balsa material between the deck and headliner and is living off the water supply and the balsa. Although the deck sounds solid over most of the area I suspect that where the half moon of water stain shows on the headliner is the extent of the compromised (colonized?) balsa and should probably be removed. If I was a gambling man I would epoxy the soft spot in the deck and do the epoxy in the drilled out fastener hole thing as well as slap a layer of fiberglass cloth and resin over the water stain down below in hopes of smothering the new occupants. Any thoughs on this situation would be welcomed. Tom B
