Trailer Tire Sidewall Cracks

I've noticed cracking on the sidewalls of my M-17 trailer tires, and I'm trying to determine whether it poses a threat. I've attached a PDF with photos. The starboard tire is worse than the port tire. I can't find the code that is supposed to tell me the date of manufacture. They are both Reynolds bias-belted tubeless tires. I only haul the boat from the lake to my home, and then to storage - less than 50 miles total. I've found information on Goodyear web site about RV tires stating that sitting around and not moving can cause sidewall cracking. Can anyone out there with tire experience offer any advice? Thanks. Like Tom wrote, it is time to replace ... the one in the lower right is especially 'scary'. Dauntless is off the market

Dauntless is off the market. I received a full price offer on her this week from a wonderful couple in OK. Yes, full price...and no....she is not leaving. I couldn't do it. We looked seriously at acquiring a larger boat to keep at the coast. The costs of doing so would have been marginal for us....to get a boat we wanted we were going to have to go with a fixer upper (which was fine).... but slip costs were much more than I priced out a year ago. The slip prices caught me off-guard and were the final determining factor that we shouldn't make the move. I felt very bad rejecting the offer, however, if we're gonna stay in a trailerable boat, there is no other boat that I really can see myself in. Dauntless fits our particular style of sailing, and I have spent years upgrading her to how I want her. I cannot imagine starting over now. I was in the process of taking her off the market when the offer came in from out of the blue. There was a last minute temptation to let her go and take the money.....but I just could not do it....knowing I would regret in the months to come. I guess we have a few more memories yet to make. I've allowed the ad on Trailer Sailor to expire and just removed the ad from Sailing Texas. Sean, Jo, and Ensign

Sean, You have avoided a huge dose of seller remorse. Wise man! The only boat that has gotten me close to leaving my M23 was a Dana 24. When I found one, sailed her and got a price from her owner, I couldn't leave my M23 either. Having sailed Dauntless myself, you have a real sweetheart of a boat, and we know how rare they are. My M17 did really nice in strong winds today

I'm a pretty new M17 owner and I was very impressed with how the boat did in heavy winds today. On Lake Pleasant, AZ this morning we had winds 10-15mph. I was alone so I had a single reef in and the gene was rolled in to the size of a working jib. I was very happy at that point with how it was so manageable. I later did a heave to in order to have my lunch. That's when the real wind came. My wife said the underground station clocked a 26mph gust at 11:00, when I was eating my lunch and the boat stayed in heave to without issue. I was moving at over 2 knots but very stable. I wonder if I pulled my keel up if it would of slowed down my forward movement. There was no end to the wind with it steady at about 20mph, so I rolled the gene in and sailed under main alone with a single reef still. Again I was so impressed. It handled the wind with no problem and the boat was so balanced I let the tiller go at one point for about 5 minutes. I purchased my new M17 without ever sailing one. I picked the M17 by process of elimination while reading a lot of reviews, stats and stories and fortunately it has been totally meeting my expectations. I'm going to start racing it next month, so we'll see how it does on that front. My last boat, a Columbia 23T, was so bad to windward we didn't stand a chance in the races. They had to keep asking us to motor back to the start line so they could start the next race, LOL. So I'm anxious to see how we will do. Regards, Ron McNeil Jackpot #675

Trailer Dolly

Montypals: Not sure where I got this information…might have even been this list. But I recently purchased a trailer dolly. http://www.etrailer.com/Hitch-Accessories/Rackem/RA20.html One problem I have with my M15 is that the boat and trailer weigh 1600 pounds. Now, I'm not sure if it is the boat or trailer that are overweight since I have not had a chance to weigh the trailer separately from the boat. But the issue is that it becomes difficult to maneuver the trailer around my driveway by myself. It is always a strain, and somewhat dangerous. So, I had no idea that such a product existed such as a trailer dolly. But it turns out that a relatively inexpensive and elegant solution exists. The dolly has nice big wheels, and easily lifts the trailer from the receiver. Once lifted, I can move the boat around with great control, and quite easily. Just amazing. Wish I had known about this before. I can really put the boat and trailer with precision wherever I want. I just thought I would share this in case any of you are having similar problems. M-17 for sale in Illinois

Hello to all, We are selling our M-17 with trailer and motor. The boat is from 1983 and was refurbished in 2008. Very clean with 7 sails, Ruddercraft kick-up rudder, and lots more boat stuff. The trailer is a 2008 Karavan. The motor is a 2013 Suzuki, 6hp, long shaft with 2hrs runtime. This rig is ready to sail. $8900. I think we got compliments every time we took it out. Thanks to those who recommended sites to list the boat for sale. For now, I have listed on several Montgomery sites to offer the boat to someone who knows Montgomery boats. This boat is nicer than many I have seen available. I will list on some commercial sites in a few days. Jim

mast base plate

As a former M-17 owner, I check in from time to time to see what's up. I saw the discussion about mast base plates and thought I might share my experience when refurbishing my boat. I had a couple of upright lead blocks and wanted to go to rope halyards, so I decided to make a plate from 1/4" aluminum plate. I cut and polished holes in the mast for running internal halyards and rigged the turning blocks and deck organizers to lead the halyards to the cockpit. Illustrations are better than words, and my photos are still online at https://picasaweb.google.com/113465139588242289574/M17. Look at the ones of the cabintop to see the plate rigging. I got the plate from Duckworks and countersunk the holes for the machine screws underneath the plate. I bedded everything with 3M 4200. I would invest in the Dwyer plate if I sailed in saltwater, but for my use this seemed adequate (and cheaper, and I had some parts). It is good to hear about all your activities and adventures - this is a great list!
