Joe, There are times I just can't keep: 1) my mouth shut, 2) my opinion to myself, and 3) from interjecting my 2 cents worth into the mix. This comment was one of those 'sarcastic remarks' that didn't translate in print. I am certainly not a competent writer - I leave that to others. Board up, reach up (a bit) and one should be able to prevent the death-roll - remember the often quoted - Keep the Boat under the Rig - you can't go wrong with that one. GO Still hot here. M-15 Main

I would agree with David on the reefing schedule: 12-15 kts -- 1st reef; 15-20 -- 2nd reef; 20+ -- 2 reefs in main and storm jib. I have gone under reefed main alone and made some progress but it is slooowww.... I have had to do this when the wind is upward to 25-30 kts. I am considering a 3rd reef for these times. It doesn't happen often but when it does, I want to be able to have a jib and the main to ensure enough driving force -- especially with the larger waves produced at this time on Lake Michigan and Superior. Does anyone else have a third set of reef points? Chris -- when I have been out in bad weather on Lake Michgan and Superior, I have always felt that the M-15 handles well -- if I am reefed properly. Reef early. Getting out on the bouncing foredeck is not that fun but it is doable. When I go out on the foredeck, I am always tethered. I also have a downhaul on the jib so I can douse it in a hurry if necessary. John Hippe M-15 Jester

MSOG and MSOGphoto, i believe, have the basic m15 sail dimensions. as tom states, between 12 and 15 knots it is time to put in the first reef when sailing an m15. 15-17 knots time for a second reef. 20+ knots storm jib time. don't sail the m15 into the wind without main AND jib ... she will not make any headway. the m15 wants to heal 10 to 15 degrees. you heal more than 20 degrees you are slowing the boat. reef and go faster. 'listen' to what the tiller/rudder are telling you - if you are working to control the boat (ie, fighting weather helm) reef! the m15 is a great boat in that she will give you excellent feedback on how you have set the sails .. it is up to the captain to listen. i've needed to adjust my sailing style on the m17. the 17, i've found, has a more neutral helm and you can heal her 'way the h*ll over' with little weather helm (when comparing to the m15). i've found many a time i'm just slowing the boat and need to adjust the sail set. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site: http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Mon, 7/13/09, Tom Smith <openboatt(a)gmail.com> wrote: The M15 behaves like a dinghy when the wind picks up. To Chris with M15#247; I'm the guy Bob gave the repair info to wherein he also mentioned your nose piece. You win! I thought my repair job was going to be big but I looked at the pictures of your boat and you win hands down. All I have to do is be sure the keel is firmly affixed to the hull. Yours looks like a major rebuild. Does your boat sit on the trailer with no keel support? Is it supported just by the bunks? Have you had any cracking or damage at the keel/hull joint? Did you use an epoxy faring compound like Marine Tex? I'm thinking about getting an estimate to have mine done because the only place I can work on the boat is the driveway. Good luck with your repairs if you aren't already you'll be an expert when you are done. Ken Wheeler M15 # 128
