Sal, et,al I dearly love the Moore 24 - and remember on the '98 Windjammer (SF to Santa Cruz) off Ano Nuevo, just short of flying, dusk in the west, a big moon rising over the bluffs and a school of dolphin, the leaders leaping across our bow, trying to keep up but not quite succeeding as we were doing 19-21 knots on the GPS! It was surely one of the finest thirty minutes I have ever spent on land or sea - all of us, our hearts in our throats and grinning ear to ear. The spell ended when we punched a roller and took a foot of water over the decks. Yes, great boat, but uncomfortable enough to make an M-15 feel like a king bed at the Ritz-Carlton. I am NOT an expert on sails or sailmakers. With that caveat, I was very pleased with Elliot Pattison sails at www.epsails.com/ . If I am not mistaken, they still provide Bob Eeg with the sails for new M-15s, and maybe the 17. Consequently, they were easy to order with only one or two confirmations. They arrived in about two and a half weeks which was very nice. I ordered a bolt rope luff and loose foot, w/ single reef pt. for the main along with the 'storm jib'. They arrived as ordered with three or four more bronze hanks on the jib than I had on the old Kern sail that IOTA came to me with. The main came with nice batten pockets and battens and three tie down points between the reef eyes at luff and leech. It was a pleasure working with Harry Pattison on the phone. The price was just a little more than what FXsails would charge for equivalent ones and they are made at the loft in San Diego instead of somewhere in Asia, which seems the good thing to do in our current economy. Mine were white, but he also can make them in tanbark for a little extra. I will be on the water the next two weekends and can report on my sailplan then. I'm disappointed Jerry won't be at the Cruiser Challenge but hope a few other Mboats will show. It should be good fun for all that do.

Hey Larry, I believe our M17's are the same year and I have the wood bulkhead panels as well. I had my original main modified to be loose-footed. Joe, The older style 17 didn't have a slot molded into the companionway entry. The original teak guides for the hatchboards were removed, and new side pieces were cut for the doors to hinge to. Same along the bottom piece. They're visible in the layout shot of the okume plywood. These were mounted a half inch back from the opening so there would be a water barrier of sorts behind the hinged sides. The threshold is stock. The exposed wood bulkhead panels on the interior are stock. The fiberglass is molded onto them. I'm not sure, but I believe all the older M17's might have a wood backing for the bulkheads, although mine is the only one I've seen quite like that. CornDog's Custom Companionway Doors

The construction is detailed (somewhat) on the MSOG photo-site, with several pictures of the various steps I took in building them. No exact measurements I'm afraid, and I've heard that trying to copy this design on the newer style M17's has some problems, such as when the doors are open all the way, they would be higher than the cabin roof behind them, presenting a possible trip hazard. storm jib

I had a storm jib on my previous M 15, Kokopelli, and I have one on Zephyr. ?I have sailed San Francisco Bay with winds close to 30 knots with a double reefed main and a storm jib. ?The boat handled extremely well, no problems. ?I would highly recommend having one on board. Bert

Hi Rick, I have a 150 genoa on Grace and use a Forespar adjustable pole I got a West Marine. It is not the smallest one they offer I think the next one up. Not sure that was needed but it was a bit thicker and seemed stronger. I will re-post from home if I can find the receipt that shows the model number. Hello Blake, My experience with the reefed main has been quite good -- once I realized that I shouldn't over tighten the outhaul. With the first reef on my sail, I still need some shape to the sail to produce power and lift. Before, when I was over tightening the outhaul I was taking out all the shape and thus had no power. My 70% "storm" jib is a much flatter cut jib than my working 130 jib so I like to keep the working jib up until the wind is near 15-20 kts. John M-15 Jester

as foredeck work on the m15 isn't much fun i always reefed the main. single handed in a blow i would have little motivation to get on the deck. just before i sold my m15 i purchased a new main with double reefs. NEVER used the sail. my plan was always to reef twice then look at changing the headsail. the standard 120ish-percent jib just isn't all that much sail. i have read the potter 15 jib makes a good m15 (and m17) 'storm jib'. if i had kept the m15 i would have gone for a p15 jib. Now my sailplan will work something like: 10-12kts main and regular #2 jib. 10-15kts main and 'storm'/#3/85% jib. 15-20+ First reef and storm jib. 20++ I really gotta wonder, what am I doing out here in a 15ft boat? This plan has the added advantage of heading to the bow to change the foresail before it really pipes up; I figure this is a good idea on an M-15 - lifelines or not. With typical summer weather upon Monterey Bay, I should be able to test my new plan soon and will report back. Lemme know what you think..... Blake Reimer M-15 IOTA P.S. Reading recent posts re: when to reef, change sails, etc. leaves me wanting my two cents in the pool and hoping for feedback, so fire away. Just a few weeks ago I received my new Elliot Pattison main and what everyone else must refer to as a 'storm jib' - I would call it an '85', as in percent, or #3. I have only been out twice in the new sails and both days the wind was light and I didn't get to really get a good read on either - except that the new main seems to resist excessive healing much better than the old, blown out main I had before.
