Havasu Poker Run update...

Hey Everyone, Now that the Holidays are over it's time for me to get into gear getting everything together for the Feb Poker Run. If you haven't gotten your reservations made now is the time to do it. I would like to get some headcounts of who has already made their reservations and how many will be planning on attending the dinners on Friday and Saturday night and the Breakfasts on Sat and Sunday mornings. I had been talking with The Nautical about our group so that they would have a heads up on how many to expect for dinner and breakfast each day. They wanted to put together a group rate proposal for us which they did. However, we ran into a fly in the ointment for this year. In order to offer group rates they want deposits paid for the meals and a guarantee of numbers in order to go forward, which I totally understand. However, so far that's now how we have been operating this event. I don't charge anyone for the event and don't have any plans too. That's not what it's about. But that means that there isn't an account to draw from in order to pay some pretty good deposits. I'm not really in a position to fork out deposits hoping that nothing funky happens that causes the turnout to be low and then I'm out my deposits. So, for this year at least, we'll do the event just like last year. We will just be 30-40 individual guests in the restaurant with a full menu and everyone takes care of their own check. It takes a little longer than if we had a special event but it wasn't a problem last year. The down side is that we are not going to get the break on the rooms. Next year when we start planning I'll poll the group and see if the majority would want to turn it into a "pay up front as a group and get the discount" type of event. Then, how it would work is we would put together an entire package (rooms, meals, etc) that you register for and pay all at one time. If you do not have reservations at Havasu Springs Resort for Sat night you probably won't get one, but it's not a problem. Make your Sat night reservation at the Nautical Inn along with your Friday night reservation. We will shuttle you back up on Sat night and back down on Sunday morning. It's about a 20 minute drive each way. A number of folks are already signed up to do it that way so it won't be a problem. I just need to know so we can plan the shuttle appropriately. I don have 1 room reserved in my name that someone can have as Jo and I will run the shuttle and end up in back in town overnight before we shuttle everyone back in the morning. Let me know if you want that room. First come first served! For the polar (and I do mean polar) opposite of Sean's lovely cruise on Lake Havasu, recorded in his great video, Lynne L was unwinterized yesterday to join seven other intrepid crews sailing in the First Annual Freeze Your Mast Off cruising boat regatta on the Potomac River, sponsored by the Daingerfield Island Sailing Club. In light winds, we (that would be I, can't blame the crew) kind of blew the start and had to tack behind most of the 8-boat fleet, leaving us at the back as we started the long upriver windward leg against a 2-3 kt combination of current and ebb tide. As the wind slackened, we managed to retrieve some of the Montgomery honor blown at the start by ghosting past four of the bigger boats (and they're all bigger boats) to finally round the windward mark in fourth place and begin to ride the current and tide down to the finish as the wind died completely. As it became evident that none of the boats still on the windward leg was going to make the mark in 2009, the attractions of beer and hot chili on the hard overcame the enthusiasm for racing, and the race was finally abandoned by the RC as the afternooon temperature peaked at 34 degrees. Sorry there is no video to show the bundled-up crews, each looking like Charlie Brown in winter, but even had a camera been available, it would have been hard to operate in ski gloves. Thanks for all the kind comments gang. I really enjoy playing around with the video thing. Up till now all the videos I have shot had been with my phone or my "still" camera that does a little bit of low res video. Jo bought me a Cannon FS100 digital video camera for Christmas 'cause she knew I liked to fool around with this stuff. She really researched it before she chose that model and I think she did a great job. It fits in the palm of my hand, literally, and can be had on sale for around $299.00. Seems to shoot great video and has software that does all different kinds of stuff. So, you guys will probably be my guinea pigs for a while as I try different things. I hope to make a really cool video of the 09 San Juan/Gulf Island trip in June. Boy, we are a long way from the days of lugging the big 'ol vhs camera on your shoulder, aren't we? Once a year is enough ..... The engine is drained and back in the garage, sails are in winter storage in the basement, boat covered and ready for snow. Time for the winter projects, like refinishing the brightwork. Just bought Rebecca Wittman's book on brightwork, which is a great read besides being useful and informative and having beautiful pictures of refinished wood boats. Honda parts

Hello Listers, I thought I would post this to the group first before all this goes to E-Bay. I picked up a 1984 Honda 4 stroke 7.5hp outboard that I am parting out. I run a 10hp 4 stoke on my M23 and I will be saving the electrical components and the lower end for spares as the parts are interchangeable. This motor has shot rod bearings. What is still good is the engine block, cylinder head with overhead camshaft, valves, oil pump, upper case with oil pan, steering arm, shifter, cowl, and mid section (long shaft). This may be a moot point because this motor is too large for a M17 or M15. For what it is worth. Maine cruise - guide description

In starting the planning for a Maine cruise this fall I want to go North of the Maine cruising mecca from Penobscot Bay to Mt Desert Island. East of Mt Desert Island you are in the true down east Maine. The following are exerpts from the Maine cruising guide for the area. I thought they might let you take a little mental mini vacation in mid-winter. "As you pass Schoodic Point heading east, civilization falls behind and you enter a more primitive world... all of the coves are working harbors filled with lobster boats and trawlers. Yachts are rare and the facilities for them are almost nonexistent. The last big marina until Eastport lies astern so now you must depend on your own resources more than ever. As you head east you will get progressively out of VHF range both for marine operators and the NOAA weather forcasts and don't expect coverage for your cell phones. Fuel for recreational boating is not readily available along this coast as the working boats buy thier gas on account and the no other means is provided. This is a land of weirs and bleberry barrens, of uninhabited islands, narrow bays and countless estuaries. Wildlife is abundant here including eagles, seals, ospreys, puffins and razor billed auks. This is also a region of dense fog, strong currents and steadily higher tides as you go east, approaching 20 or more." A challenging place to cruise small boats :-).
