Bones, 100% Pure Tung Oil applied 'many' coats - rubbed between coats with metal wool - (I use steel if off the boat - should probably use copper for all - but I can't find 0000 Copper wool can you?) My last round of oiling has withstood 15 months with one quick touch-up of light oil, no wool. Arizona Sun - it is a dry heat! Yeah, Yeah - do not use steel wool on your boat if it will ever go in the water. I know. GaryO M-17 #316a We are goin to Dizzeyland! Just a personal note on the heavy weather capabilities of an M17. If you check out the pictures of the M17 "Thompson" on the MSOGphotosite you'll see a picture of her beating to windward in 30+ knots in a race here in Havasu a couple of years ago. _http://msogphotosite.com/MSOG/b17thomps/b17thomps11.jpg_ (http://msogphotosite.com/MSOG/b17thomps/b17thomps11.jpg) I had sold the boat to my buddy Jason after acquiring our M23 and was crewing for him during the race. We were reefed down with a small working jib up and the boat was doing great. In fact, many of the much larger boats in the race had already dropped all sail, retired and were heading in under power. We finished the race and then sailed her home! Can the M17 handle heavy weather? Yes, I think so, but I also read a comment that I think rings very true. MUCH depends on the crew, and this is not just for an M17 but for any boat. If you want to sail in heavy winds you need to work up to it and learn how your boat needs to be set-up to be able to handle those winds under control. I used to be very nervous about getting caught in heavy winds. And eventually, if you keep ratcheting up the wind-speed, any crew or boat is going to reach it's comfort level where sailing switches from being fun and safe, to scary and out of control. But, I have learned that if I set the boat up properly (1 reef, 2 reefs, storm sail, working jib, whatever) for the conditions, I am amazed at the conditions that I am able to go out and sail in comfortably. Jo and I have built up to sailing in 30 knots incrementally. Just my opinion, but to do it safe it takes the skill and experience of the crew, the proper equipment (if you can't tuck a reef safely quickly and properly, or make a headsail change to the correct size headsail for the conditions, it's not going to work),and a capable boat. I can speak personally for the M17 and M23, they are CAPABLE boats! I love my Monty! **************Start the year off right. A mystery solved... Thanks to Rudi

In June of 2006 the Photo Site published a PDF of the 1987 Arizona boating guide. The guide was compliments of John Lubliner, prior owner of M17, flush deck, Coyote. The book cover photo was Montgomery 15 hull number 112. She is now called Chiquita and sails out of Aurora, Colorado. Her owner Rudi Konig sent lots of great photos. Idasailor rudder and some improvements

This next M_17 going to Utah has the newer Idasailor Rudder. I like how it folds; and it looks stout enough. It arrived yesterday and fit like a glove. Anyone have experience (positive and negative) on the durability and ease of folding this rudder? The blade appears to sit deeper when folded down; and she has a line pull to raise her. Some changes: We're going to all rope halyards with a larger shackle for the main and jib. The M_17 Strawanza, now 'out there somewhere' was all rope and I liked the way we could run lines aft for singlehanding. Also, on the new M_15s were going with a turnbuckle on the forestay. This makes it easier to set the side shrouds only once, and tension the headstay nice and tight. We have done this on several of the 15s and now think the extra cost is worth it. Hi M15 Gang, My M15 hull number was 400, and I had a leak problem. After a nice, hard on the wind, beat across Lake Champlain the first year we owned the boat, I discovered water in my Port cabin storage area; under the mattress. It was several quarts of water. Back at the dock I emptied out the water. Then my wife careened the boat as far as it would go, while I was looking for water coming into the aft port locker. I found a steady stream of water. It came from a spot high up on the inside of the laminate on the inside of the storage area. Let M15 rest in normal position - no water: careen M15 to about 45 degrees; lots of water coming in. The next question, once we got home again was; - what was the source of the leak? You can probably find my complete detailed description of the "why" and "how" in the M archives. I filled the inside of the M15 with water, so that the water was higher than the CB; put in some special companionway hatch boards with a vacuum cleaner hose connection, I made; and sealed the opening. Then I pressurized the interior of the boat using the OUT side of a shop vac. I blew, not sucked... The idea was, help the water inside the boat find the exit hole.... I waited for awhile, and then finally had a drip that became a steady stream of water from the very aft end of the CB trunk. The short answer is that the leak came from the aft top end of the centerboard trunk; where it mated with other mouldings. To access the area, I had to remove the teak board at the companionway. Just drill holes in the middle of the teak plugs, and then pull them out. They get destroyed in the process. Now you can reach the mounting screws holding the teak plank in place. Remove them, and lift off the teak plank. Next I cut out the aft end of the centerboard slot in the cockpit to be able to reach and inspect the end of the centerboard trunk joint using a DREMEL tool. There I found my leak. I cut away some of the laminate of that joint, at the leak position; to clean the area and to have an easier area to fill. Then the area was refilled with an WEST epoxy / filler mixture. No more leak. To make sure, and to have a visual reference if any future leaks should occur, I drilled two 1/4" holes on either side of the centerboard trunk in the cabin interior moulding; between the cabin sole and the hull. These holes fit a tube from a PAR hand pump that I had, so that: A) If there was any leak I would immediately see the water on the cabin sole B) With my access holes, I could put the tube in the holes and pump the area between the outer hull and the cabin interior dry. I never found any more water. (No water was ever found after the repair with lots of gentle to hard sailing on both tacks) The repair itself was the easy part. That just required cutting the M15 patient open and grinding out the centerboard aft trunk joint area and resealing it. Pinpointing the exact place of the leak was the more difficult part of the job. Jerry suggested a pint of FOSTERS as a good leak detection tool, and he was correct. It almost took a pint before the drip from the CB trunk started... New teak plugs are available from WEST Marine.
