Thanks! She is a 1977. I don't know her hull number yet. You folks may be able to help me already. I will inherit a main but no jib. Through your site, I've found and contacted a gentleman from Longview TX who is coming to Houston this week, and will be bringing two jibs. He thinks one is probably a working jib and the other about a 130. By way of reference, has anyone bought say a new Main(one set of reefing points) and a working jib recently that can give me an idea on cost? New Owner(to be) 17 Footer

Hello to all participants at the Montgomery Owner's mailing list. The instructions for how to subscribed also asked that I try and post some sort of introduction, which is the lease I can do considering I'm betting I'll learn a lot about these boats and enjoy some dialogue with a number of you in the coming years. Here goes..... I live in Houston. I married my college sweetheart who was from a sailing family which is what exposed me to this wonderful hobby. Of course I got the bug much worse than she ever had it and I think she still holds it against her dad for introducing me to it. I've worked my way up through a number of sailboats, Sailfish, 19 ft Cypress hull sloop, O'Day Mariner, Catalina 22, then what I thought would be my next to last boat(then and now I think my last will be a Bristol Channel Cutter...... theraputic to hold onto a dream you know), a little known but wonderful boat called a Mystic 30, a few of which were built in the late 70's early 80's by Legnos Marine in Groton, CT. We started a family, and after two years of paying for all the things you pay for with a boat kept in a slip and sailing once, I sold her. We did the power boat thing(still do) but we now have nine and five year old sons, a lakehouse we just bought(Lake Livingston, TX, 70 miles north of Houston,) and a desire to make sure our boys are exposed to sailing. I had intended to wait a year or so before buying a small boat since we are hemmoraging cash getting this house, furnishing it, etc, but in total innocence a couple of weeks ago I rode though a marina just killing some time and .... you have all been there....., this place I'm about to describe.... sitting in the front of the brokergage office was an absolutely beautiful daysailer in a trailer with a huge Christmas bow still on it and garland strung all the way to the masthead on the stays . Christmas bows.... this was mid-Jan..... the poor logic of a smitten wanna be owner kicked in...."Wow, he thought he'd move this thing for Christmas and didn't . Man don't you know he's ready to deal now! It's mid cold Jan., we're supposedly headed for a recession, and I think I'll be in the driver's seat on this negotiation! Well, a quick once over ,wowed by the brand new blue paint job, and an immediate fear of "the guy who was just here yesterday taking picture of her and is really interested"had me going from the upper hand negotiator to the emotional buyer! That other guy is sure busy as hell, and amazingly has my exact taste. He's just left the parking lot 5 minutes before my arrival, on every darn boat I've ever bought! Anyway, I've got the guy converting the rudder to a kick up, and really giving the trailer a once over. I've got a 500 mile trip to bring her back to Houston week after next. I'll be reading everything at your site about trailer inspections(even the trailerable boats I've had I've kept in the water), and I'd sure love any suggestions anyone might have about a checklist I shouls use before beginning tht trek back to TX. Wecome aboard, Rod. I'm kind of a newbie also, having got into M-17 sailing just last summer and fall. You've made a great choice, and this forum is a super resource - lots of good advice and lots to learn. If you found a good boat, you were right to go for it. In regard to the Flicka cutter rig. It came stock as a sloop, a sloop rigged as a cutter, and a gaff rigged cutter. I have the sloop version. I would not recommend a cutter for a small boat. Each time you tack, you have two sets of jib sheets as well as having the jib go around the inner stay each time. (or around the free flying staysail). If you want more bells and whistles, there is always a spinnaker, and you could build yourself a small dodger, install a stern pulpit, stanchions and life lines. What ever fits your fancy. I had twin Wykemham-Martin type furlers on a 42' cutter. Like someone already posted you cannot (actually should not) furl with units that have the sail seized to the wire. Wire systems are made to tighten the strands when furling the sail (and you want to make sure the sail is wound in the correct direction when installing one). Opening the sail reverses the process but it stops unwinding the strands when all the way out and they relax. Partial opening(reefing) can make the wire strands want to keep unwinding to the point of stress and possible damage. I also vouch for sail shape being very poor if trying to reef...it makes a nice downwind balloon. The good side of wire luff furling gear is sails can be hanked on, raised, lowered, changed, coiled and stowed very easily. Loosen the halyard and the sail drops to the deck as a noodle, etc, etc. Also, I have the small boat Harken roller gear on my 20' trailer sailer. It's great and I would do it again. I personally don't have a need to reef or change headsails enough to warrant going to gear with a foil. Reefing headsails with roller gear also puts the CE up high and does it exactly when you want the CE to be lowered. Bill P. **************Start the year off right. HI Doug, My, you ARE the adventurous soul! Isn't one of the advantages of a gaff rig more sail area? And, for a boat to be a true cutter, doesn't the mast need to be moved aft? Perhaps go with the gaff rig and forget the stasyl? Seems to me they did that with the Flicka go increase sail plan performance. Perhaps Frank can chime in? M_Boats:What wHe did last weekend.

Finally home this morning....Spent 4 days down in Phoenix for the Leukemia Cup Regatta and then had to come right home and go to work for two more. Gary already gave the run-down of the weekend, although some it is in "Gary code!" Let me see.....Yes, the M-dude that was skippering Gary's 17 was THE "M" dude, our own Jerry Montgomery. For those of you that haven't met Jerry, I can't say enough about him. After racing on Sat he and Gary stopped by Dauntless' slip and we sat around, relaxed, a little wine flowed, Probably a little whine too! (about my poor racing skills!). Even though the winds weren't great (and that was when they were at their best) those two made a great showing for the Monty gang. Would you expect anything else? Jo and I along with our hired crew (pay was terrible) Steve struggled to get Dauntless through the course in light air. Jo and I were staying on the boat and I made no effort to lighten her up for racing. I bet if I had really wanted to I could have removed 1500lbs of gear from her hold and helped our cause out a lot, but we were there just for fun and wanted to be comfortable. My main goal was to participate in the fundraising portion of the regatta and we made a good showing raising nearly $700 for the cause. Big thanks to all of those Monty folks out there that supported us. Overall the regatta raised nearly $50,000 for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Dorothy and Eldor Eisen made a good showing in Motu-iti and we enjoyed seeing them. They will be coming to Lake Havasu in Feb for the Poker Run/Scavenger Hunt. Man! Those two really get around! Since we saw them last they made big modifications to their 17's trailer, adding a second axle to help support the weight of the custom scooter racks they have on either side of the bow and brakes too. Like Gary, as far as I'm concerned, windward/leeward races courses bite! BORING. And, every time you round a mark you are heading head-on into another fleet of boats that you are not racing against coming right at you. I'd spend 5 minutes working on getting Dauntless' speed up to 1.2 knots, only to have to tack cause some other class of boat was crossing our bow on starboard. Then start all over again trying to get the momentum built up. All in all we had a great time, though. Not being "hard core" racers the experience for me is more about just getting together, sailing, and having fun. And that we did. As far as the "famous" comment....well.....a legend in my own mind...maybe???!!! hahaha Truth is, while provisioning at the grocery store in Wickenburg, AZ I did end up spending about an hour talking to some folks that just came up and wanted to talk or ask questions. Not about my website, but about "that boat" in the parking lot. AND...all of you have experienced that! Montys get attention! It's fun to meet people that way. AND! It's a great way to spread the word! Get a Monty!!! But you guys all already know that! Thanks again to those that helped us out with contributions.
