Hey Larry, I'm pretty happy so far with the cetol natural teak. I bashed it pretty good a couple of times while setting up the boat without noticeable damage. Funny how after you finish something you then have to bash something into it when you never did before it was finished. You are right, though, how it weathers the AZ sun will be the test. The tiller-pilot we were using was an old Auto-Helm AH-800. Came with the boat. It does pretty good and in the ocean swell is a godsend as it works the tiller back and forth in time with the swells instead of your arm! If the boat is balanced ok it has no problem. By the time we got to Anacapa Island we were pretty overpowered and heeled about 20 to 30 degrees. The boat handles it just fine but the weather helm really builds and I don't ask the tiller pilot to deal with that. It's my fault anyway cause if I'd just get off my lazy a## and either reef down and/or put on the right headsail everything would be honky dory again. Case in point....after reaching Anacapa, we tucked in close to the island to shield us (a little ) from wind and swell. I We switched to a working jib from the 150 we were running. The autopilot took us all the way home on the main and working jib at 5 -6 knots and never missed a beat. Of course we were reaching also, which makes it a lot easier. I bought the TP-10 on Ebay 'cause it was too good of a deal to pass up but have to get and extension for it before we can use it. I think it's probably the superior of the two as it's much newer. Sean, The video's are great! Felt like I was there with you. Wish I was! Really like the look of that Natural Teak Cetol you used. Be interesting to see how it holds up in your HOT weather down there. (We had 36 degrees up here this morning.) I see you've installed a tiller pilot. How's that working out? The Simrad 10 that I have on CornDog is OK for motoring, but I don't care for it when sailing. Gary, Thanks for the nice words. We've just both found that, for us anyway, hooking up with groups of other sailors like the MSOG crew or Socal Potters in this instance, we meet the nicest people and have so much fun. hope you'll come join us! trailering with motor on the mount

I don't ever trailer with my motor on the mount. Of course I do have a heavy old 4 HP Johnson 2 cycle. It's too heavy for my M-15 fixed mount. I keep it in the back of my 4 Runner and strap it down so it doesn't brain me & the family if I have to stop fast. Paul L. Where to put outboard while towing.

I keep my 32lb Evinrude attached to the transom with an outboard lock. I also tie it in the up position by running a line with several turn from the stern cleats. This insures that the motor will not fall down and also absorbs any heavy road shocks as well as distributing the engine weight to the cleats and transom. Remember, no more than 10% of the trailer's weight should be on the tongue. The load should be adjusted for this approximate weight. An engine put on the winch stand may cause the tongue weight to be excessive. Assuming a total trailer/boat equipment weight of 1,100 to 1,300 lbs, a bathroom scale should show 110 to 130 lbs at the tongue. The best trailer control will be achieved if you follow this rule. New M17 owner, hi!

Hello everyone! My wife, Debora, and I (Rick) have just purchased a 2005 M17 from a very nice fellow down in southern CA. I just arrived back in Seattle with the M17 yesterday. Dan, the former owner, has owned Montgomery sailboats for over 30 years and only sold this barely used one because he messed up his back and can't single hand anymore (poor fellow). He installed numerous extra blocks and cleats...it is going to take some time to figure out his rigging plan since the 95 degree heat during the loading of the boat for trailering melted my brain while he was explaining things. I was also a little dizzy from having seen the boat ad on Monday night, buying a plane ticket that same night, and handing him a cashier's check Tuesday at noon! I have never been *quite* that spontanious before, but when you see a dream boat barely used for half price of new, you gotta act fast. Dan was also one of the nicest guys I have met, and kept tossing additional items I might need into my Uhaul making me feel even more guilty for taking his boat. When he handed me a set of padlocks that he had wrapped in protective foam so they would not scratch the gelcoat when installed on the lockers, I knew I had made a good purchase. We plan on doing a dry run of completely setting her up for sail this weekend in the driveway, then packing up and taking a test sail on Lake Washington. After we get a bit used to her and think we will not look completely clueless, it would be great to meet up with anyone for a day sail around the Sound or something. Our previous sailing experience consists of taking the first serious of sailing courses from Windworks at Shilshole marina and then taking out their Catalina 25 boats a few times for daysails. Hopefully what we learned on the Cat 25 boats will transfer to sailing the M17. Anyway, just wanted to drop a line and introduce ourselves. I look foward to sailing in the Puget Sound area with some of you soon! Rick

It never occurred to me NOT to leave the motor on the transom until I read here that most people don't. I've towed at least seven thousand miles with it there with no problems (no one rear-ended me.) I have the permanent transom that does not raise and lower and a 2 HP Suzuki 2-stroke. Bobbie
